Lush Edinburgh say they wouldn't serve anyone in "woman" T-shirt

Apparently some stickers found their way onto the Lush Edinburgh storefront causing horror and consternation on Princes St this morning. They are too awful to be shared, obviously, but clearly they carried some message of hateful bigotry - or biological fact as it used to be known.

Anyway, staff on the thread are letting it be known that anyone wearing a T-shirt carrying the dictionary definition of a woman would not be served - haven't seen a comment on what would happen if it said 'I ❤️ JKR'. Not sure how legal that is.

@Packingsoapandwater

Oh dear. It seems none of you old fuddy duddies understand and you really need to get educated, like the folks at LUSH, before you kill everybody.

Everyone knows you don't need customers to make money from your business. Little gold coins just appear above your head and vanish into your pocket.

I know. I've played The Sims religiously for years.

Grin

Don’t be ridiculous you can’t get money like that.

You have to smash blocks with your head while avoiding doing any actual plumbing 😂

@MissEliza

Genuine question- can anyone suggest a substitute for Ultrabalm?! It's the only thing that doesn't make my skin react but I can't bear to give Lush another penny of my money after reading the Op.
Have you tried Balmonds Skin Salvation?
Deltoids1 · 04/08/2020 11:58

Can I recommend the Yorkshire Soap Company for gentle and delicious smelling soaps? I have super dry skin and their soap doesn’t dry it irritate at all.

SerenityNowwwww · 04/08/2020 12:01

ARRAN Sense of Scotland seem good.

Dances · 04/08/2020 12:07

If they refused to serve someone on the basis of wearing a t shirt stating a fact which is the basis of the protected Sex characteristic in the Equalities Act, would they not be breaking the law?

SerenityNowwwww · 04/08/2020 12:14

Who the hell knows - they don’t care as long as they can play the victim. Have they ever run a campaign against FGM it example or selective abortion/murder of girl babies? Or rape (either sex)?

They are choosing to back ‘sex/gender politics lite’. Not the nastty gritty, bloodied and violent sex based topics. But hey, they have glitter (which goes up your whatsit, making it itchy, and gets stuck in your bellybutton and backside-crack).

gluteustothemaximus · 04/08/2020 12:22

Be good to get it trending.

Thisismytimetoshine · 04/08/2020 12:23

The sticker just says "Keep prisons single sex"??
And there were numbnuts posting on Lush's Facebook "OMG, hope you guys are safe"?!
I literally can't comprehend most of this, it just won't compute. 🤯

SerenityNowwwww · 04/08/2020 12:23

I imagine back home they will get called ‘Pish’.

aliasundercover · 04/08/2020 12:27

I never understand what these sort of Woke warriors think they’re going to achieve. When faced with a daft sign like this there are three options the potential customer can take:
A) the most likely - the customer will ignore it or not notice it

B) next most likely - they go and buy their stinky soap somewhere else

C) never going to happen - the sign makes them rethink their entire approach to gender identity. They realise they’ve been a hateful bigot, but from now on will be full TWAW. Thanks to the staff of Lush they have become a better person. They strip off their ‘Adult Human Female’ t shirt and enter the shop naked to buy their politically sound bath bomb.

All Lush are doing is driving some customers elsewhere.

SerenityNowwwww · 04/08/2020 12:42

It’s just for their own benefit so that they can stick a post up on their social media account to show how super special they are.

OneWomanOneDog · 04/08/2020 12:51

Thank you to the person who prompted me to look up the CEO's photo. Yes it's damn obvious where the mysogyny of lush comes from.

I stopped buying their shyte when they supported the hunt sabs - an organisation with a long history of violence against animals and people whilst claiming to be against violence towards animals.

The police campaign was controversial not because of what they were claiming to support but how the marketing was executed made it look like they were anti (all) police.

The kissing campaign that was women (no extra large women though) wearing t-shirts which members of the public were encouraged to kiss.

They did a 10 hour live stream "animal testing" on a performance artist dressed in nude clothing on a leash in their window. She was force fed, injected with saline and some other stuff.

It was female staff who were "strongly encouraged" to go naked under their aprons for a campaign about excess packaging.

They're no stranger to controversy in their marketing. It's a deliberate strategy. They know exactly what they are doing. They're courting the woke brigade. This is exactly in alignment with their target market, woke young women who have drunk the kool-aid.

I think the most effective response to this incident is to stop giving it airtime. One person placing one sticker has given them the opportunity for outrage porn marketing for free. Let's not.

We are not the target market - as you can tell by the proportion of people replying who are disappointed to not be able to boycott them. We are just props in their outrage porn movie.

OneWomanOneDog · 04/08/2020 12:54

Deliberately offending those who are not your target market is a calculated, deliberate and often successful marketing strategy.

Thisismytimetoshine · 04/08/2020 12:56

They're courting the woke brigade
Who may wave their little sparkly flags on Twitter, but how many bath bombs do they actually buy?
Most Lush customers are preteen girls, or those buying gifts for preteen girls.
It's as daft as Tesco making the same announcement and seriously imagining it wouldn't have a detrimental effect on sales.

Who are Lush's target market?
SunsetBeetch · 04/08/2020 13:00

That's incredible. They don't think prisons should be single sex? Wow.

I haven't bought anything from them sonce their Cosmetics To Go days. What they are offering is no longer unique, let's face it. And no longer all that nice.

Winesalot · 04/08/2020 13:04

Having a look at their Facebook page, the pics of the letter depicting the 'kissing' day promotion are quite effective. There is one pic on the original blog post of someone actually kissing a woman's nipple with the promo shirt on.

Maybe we should all post kind of example of just how well Lush treat their employees? Obviously, their welfare is really as well regarded as women's.

DJLippy · 04/08/2020 13:25

Direct action this week in London if anyone fancies it?
Aja🇯🇲🇬🇧🟥✊🏾 IStandWithJKR (@Aja02537920) Tweeted: So @LushLtd are you gonna kick me out your store for wearing a Tshirt with Women Adult Human Female on it?
Is that the game your gonna play huh?

Ok see you on the weekend and let's see how this plays out. twitter.com/Aja02537920/status/1290542232228048896?s=20

@clairethewitch70

Does anyone know of a substitute for lush henna rouge? Then I can avoid the place. Cosmetics to Go was one of the highlights of the 80’s. So sad it came to this.

Surely it is illegal to refuse to serve a customer just because of a T-shirt or bag??
And JKR rocks. We have a T-shirt press in work. Any suggestions for what to put on it if I have to trek there for my henna?

You could just buy plain henna powder if you use the rouge one - it doesn't have all the added stuff like cocoa butter etc so doesn't smell as nice (henna powder isn't bad, just rather grass-y!) but it's so much easier to mix powder with water than it is to try and melt the Lush bars down.

I used to buy mine from henna-boy.co.uk

MrsJamin · 04/08/2020 13:43

Yup @OneWomanOneDog that's what I said earlier - although less succinctly!

MrsJamin · 04/08/2020 13:46

They've deleted all the comments on their Instagram post! So cowardly. If you're going to be against single sex prisons then at least be proud of it!

JudyGemstone · 04/08/2020 13:49

I've recently discovered Facetheory skincare products, they have great quality ingredients for really decent value. 'Vegan' and made in U.K.

FairfaxAikman · 04/08/2020 13:49

If the won't serve us in "women" t shirts, how about we all protest outside by wearing Harry Potter costumes.

I've lost my hairbrush so bagsy Hagrid! 😁
