Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Would you take part in a mass naked lie down demo to highlight the erasure of women's rights?

There's a small rumble on Twitter suggesting this as a way of women showing our vulnerability and refusal to be pushed aside. And a shock tactic obviously. Would you take part?

Are you having a laugh? I wish to choose which men can see me naked, which is why I support retaining single sex spaces. I cannot believe I need to explain this.

WhoWants2Know · 02/08/2020 12:04

Are they thinking along the lines of the mass naked bike rides to raise awareness of how vulnerable cyclists are and lobby for better cycle paths? Those do grab attention, and are usually quite clever with use of body paint, etc which reduce the ewww factor.

But in the case of a women only protest, I think the nudity would detract from the message. Women are still vulnerable with their clothes on.

Jaxhog · 02/08/2020 12:05

No. Because the press would have a field day, and not in a way that would be beneficial to the cause.

Jeeeez · 02/08/2020 12:05

I'm not sure if it's prompted by Portland tbh..quite possibly.

That's a prompt and pretty emphatic result! I also like @WinnieLo's idea. Is it something we should plan, or should we wait for the govts statement on gra to come out?

Mass protest - deffo
Naked - deffo not

If the reaction from men is likely to be "protest with lots of naked ladies? whoohoo! get in!", then it ain't feminist. Playing to the male gaze (even tangentially) is antithetical to the cause.

This! Why the need to be naked?! It sort of defeats the message!

ChaToilLeam · 02/08/2020 12:09

Not a chance. Why are women expected to undress to be noticed? You don’t see
men doing this nonsense.

Bluntness100 · 02/08/2020 12:11

How the hell would getting naked and laying down do anything other than give rise to voyeurism?

If women want to demonstrate their vulnerablity. And I’m not sure why we would, then there are better ways to go about it rather than getting our kits off.

Lizzie523 · 02/08/2020 12:12

No. Why would we have to be naked?!

StillNotAGirl · 02/08/2020 12:12

No Confused

Steamfan · 02/08/2020 12:13

no

Bluntness100 · 02/08/2020 12:14

Honestly this has annoyed me.

Oh how shall we show folks we are vulnerable and won’t be pushed around.

Oh I know, let’s get naked!!

Seriously has the world not moved on to a level women don’t feel the need to do this. Not only would I not do it, I’d be deeply offended by the sight of it.

This for Pete's sake

queenofknives · 02/08/2020 12:15

God, no. It's fucked up that women are supposed to take their clothes off to get attention.

Lamahaha · 02/08/2020 12:16

Absolutely never. I will never do anything naked, or any kind of "slutwalk" demo, or anything of that kind. I believe these things defeat the purpose and only makes us look ridiculous.

highame · 02/08/2020 12:16

OK, have changed my mind.

Some good points made, but if direct action were to be considered, it must be attached to something, otherwise it becomes vague and women just wont turn up.

It also has to have mass impact. We could march, all dressed up as stereotypes of women (though I'd not get far in high heels)

Winesalot · 02/08/2020 12:18

A protest? Definitely!!!

Naked? No.

Wearing the definition of woman? Yes

Laying down? No. I don’t like the symbology really. Standing and being immovable, much better.

Lamahaha · 02/08/2020 12:18

@noblegiraffe

the yoga teacher (?)

As I read it, sex worker.

Quite. That had nothing to do with yoga.
MouseandCat · 02/08/2020 12:19

No way. It suggests women are only visible when naked. It suggests women must be sexualised to be noticed and will only be listened to when we have taken our allocated position of subordination. The worst, worst kind of 'feminism'

SlipperyLizard · 02/08/2020 12:20

Nope. Why should women have to get naked to get attention? I don’t see naked men protesting.

Kreacheriscleaning · 02/08/2020 12:21

No.
I’m not sure how seemingly showing that I am not bothered by my vulnerability would demonstrate that vulnerability and need for rights based around it.
Plus, it would just become wank fodder and entirely pointless.

The Icelandic women’s way seems better as suggested by pp.

Bluntness100 · 02/08/2020 12:21

And as a pp said, you never see men doing this. Let’s demonstrate naked. Oh and let’s lie down and do it, so they can get a really good photograph.

It’s so insulting.

LuluJakey1 · 02/08/2020 12:22

No.

WendyHoused · 02/08/2020 12:23

Hell no. Women only being taken notice of when undresses is part of the problem. We only exist for male gaze or as males’ support humans.
Fuck that.

Miriel · 02/08/2020 12:27

Absolutely not.

Women are objectified enough already without making their naked bodies the focus of a protest. Any reporting would concentrate on the nudity, not the message.
