She's right to lock her account. Wait 3 days and they'll have found a new witch to burn.
Social media is an outrage machine. But outrage burns quickly, and always needs fresh fodder.

Gumbomambo · 26/07/2021 13:11

I was trying to find out what had happened, good god! He is right and has every right to feel queer is offensive. Sifting through the bile on Twitter they are saying she liked a tweet by a person investigated for terrorism? What is wrong with these absolute morons? Oh wait she has an actual vagina.

Rubidium · 26/07/2021 13:14

Quite. Predictably, Owen Jones has denounced her from his pulpit:

She just needs to add "RTs and likes do not equal endorsements" to her profile.
They're a braying pack of hyenas, brainwashed by algorithms. Enough free thought to fit on the head of a pin.

He's always slagging her off - he is absolutely clueless. If Keir Starmer did actually remove the whip from Rosie Duffield I honestly think the Labour Party would be finished. There is only so much misogyny that people can take.

Exactly, it would be officially sanctioned, demonstrable evidence of the misogyny within (certain parts of) the Labour Party which the Tories would use as a stick to beat them with, and which would alienate half the electorate. In other words, a vote loser. Keir Starmer may have his shortcomings but he's not that daft.

RoyalCorgi · 26/07/2021 14:23

Hang on, I'm trying to get my head around this. I just need to check that it's as insane as I think it is.

A gay person tweets that they object to the term "queer" because it's offensive and homophobic.

Rosie Duffield MP "likes" the tweet.

The usual assortment of extremists, woman-haters and lunatics complain that Duffield is being homophobic and transphobic and call for her expulsion.

I mean, really?

Bolets · 26/07/2021 14:49

I believe the part they are calling transphobic is his sentence that queer is "being reclaimed by heterosexuals cosplaying as the opposite sex and as "gay". It's factually true but definitely enough to whip them into the usual frenzy.

RoyalCorgi · 26/07/2021 14:57

God give me strength. Of course it's true.

It's kind of amazing that a gay man like Talcum X would go along with something that is so utterly homophobic. Does anyone else wonder if he's an enemy plant?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 26/07/2021 17:14

More power to you, Rosie.

Bosky · 26/07/2021 17:57

It's awful what they are doing to her. Some of them started by objecting to her Liking the tweet where the guy (Kurtis Tripp) said that he doesn't want to be called "queer" but then it got a whole lot worse.

I don't know how many people vet every Twitter account before they dare to Like someone's tweet, I know I don't.

Rosie Duffield's extra crime is that she is either supposed to be psychic or to have researched Kurtis before liking that tweet because it turns out that he has a criminal record in the USA . . . however . . .

  1. "US rapper Kurtis Tripp talks to Dennis Kavanagh about conversion therapy at 13, the pressure to identify as trans and his journey back as a gender critical gay rights activist"
Lesbian and Gay News, 19 July 2021

American rapper and musician Kurtis Tripp has been on a journey from trans rights advocate to gender critical gay rights activist. Dennis Kavanagh talked to Tripp about his personal story of conversion therapy and the pressure surrounding gay men and lesbians to identify as trans.

If you’ve spent any time recently in the LGBT gender debates on social media, you’ve probably encountered a TikTok video by Kurtis Tripp. The videos are avowedly “gender critical” and normally feature the 30-year-old responding to videos aimed at gay people being urged to “unlearn their genital preferences”. In a style evoking Magdalen Berns, Tripp looks directly to camera making the case that conversion therapy is alive and well. He should know, as a 13-year-old he experienced precisely that courtesy of a hyper-religious stepmother.

The videos have prompted a predictable backlash in what is generally regarded as one of the most toxic social media debates there is, and his detractors have been quick to publicise the fact that he is a convicted criminal having threatened to go “white boy crazy” and “shoot up a school” on social media in 2018. As with so many attempted social media “cancellations”, there seems to be more to the story than the extravagant claims given the Judge presiding over the case sentenced him to a 3-year probation order later reduced to one year. He’s experienced “pile-ons”, duplicate impersonation Twitter accounts falsely accusing him of rape, mass reporting and accusations he is a terrorist. Incredible it is then to discover that until very recently Tripp considered himself “non binary” and a member of the trans community. His trajectory in the debate is as mixed and unlikely as his distinctive accent, a voice that occasionally produces a Tennessee drawl, most obvious when he says “Y’all” mixed with his native, quick talking, Michigan State cadence.

  1. Among the MANY people speaking up for Rosie is the author of that article, Dennis Noel Kavanagh

  1. Dennis also wrote for Lesbian and Gay News about his thoughts on the current use of the term "Queer"

"Dennis Kavanagh: Queer?"
March 23, 2021

In the game of thrones of gay politics we have our own seat forged of weapons with many pretenders to it, the iron throne that is the word “queer” from which those with dubious claims to real homosexual lives can rule the seven kingdoms of victimhood and identity politics.

For many of us, the word “queer” was an integral part of the soundscape of real hatred that got us beaten up, sacked and bullied – for years we were “dirty/filthy queers” who had “queerboy” shouted at us as we anxiously left pubs in groups for safety. As words go, it’s a sharp blade, the wounds it leaves are messy lacerations that don’t heal neatly rather than clean surgical cuts. Strange it is then, that a word which was an essential piece of architecture of social hate is now contorted like an Escher staircase to nowhere where up is down, left is right and being “queer” is now desirable.

Us run of the mill gay people weren’t consulted about this of course. We don’t have the leisure time for “queer activism”, nor do we have the desire to mentally self-harm required to read even 10 minutes of “queer theory”, the not-fit-for-human-consumption reconstituted meat of the academic abattoir. We don’t attend seminars on “queering particle physics” or the like, because for us unenlightened troglodytes particles have always pretty much been particles. We also don’t just accept without question self-declarations of “queerness”, but then again and we’re used to treating anything associated with the Q word with a high degree of scepticism, forgive our cynicism, but 20 odd years of “queer bashing” will do that to you.

When we look to our new blue haired overlords in gay culture, we see scheming nobles meaning to win the throne of “queer”, ferocious puritans who have less sex than the generation before but do nothing but talk about sex. They wear “identity” and anime avatars online like a monk wears a habit, only they require that it us lowly congregants who take a vow of silence regarding our objections to this word.

LOJ blocked me on Facebook after I defended Rosie . Very sensitive chap.No way she will lose the whip...MP for Canterbury! Not many Labour MPs South of the Thames Valley...

Violetparis · 26/07/2021 19:20

The sanctimonious Labour MP whose gobs are usually all over Twitter seem to be missing in action when it comes to standing up for Rosie Duffield and women, shame on them all.

Violetparis · 26/07/2021 19:22

Labour MPs that should say, there are many who have chosen to stay silent.

FloralBunting · 26/07/2021 19:25

Interestingly, Kurtis is contrite about the things he tweeted and doesn't justify them. He accepts he was wrong.

I've yet to see any of the nasty fuckers who have issued rape and threats of death and violence towards women do anything of the kind.

And I will reiterate, because I am right there with Kurtis, Dennis and the growing voices saying this - do not use the Qslur. Use it of me in any circumstance and I have a no tolerance policy. I will report you for hate speech.

FloralBunting · 26/07/2021 19:28

And if you are a heterosexual who claims to be gay or lesbian because you believe you are, or present as the opposite sex, then yup, cosplayer is 100% correct. The shit I'm facing down from 'progressive' people insisting lesbians and gay men should be 'open to the possibility' of the opposite sex is absolutely vomit worthy.

Sophoclesthefox · 26/07/2021 19:59

None of my lesbian and gay friends would ever refer to themselves as queer. There’s probably a generational element. When your father says to you “I don’t want a queer for a son. I haven’t got a son any more”, as happened to my best friend in 1994, it does tend to colour your opinion of a word. Reclaim it if you like, fine, but like Gretchen, you can’t make queer happen.

Conversely, my young niece, who calls herself queer, is in a relationship with a man.

Will the Labour Party ever find its ovaries and stand up to defend Rosie for having a perfectly run of the mill opinion about a word that is commonly shared by thousands, possibly millions of both homosexual and heterosexual people?

Bonkers.

Precipice · 26/07/2021 22:05

.MP for Canterbury! Not many Labour MPs South of the Thames Valley...

Not only that! When it unexpectedly became a swing seat and was won, it had been held 30 years by one Tory MP, and so long for the Tories that at the time it was said to be recognised by Guinness World Records as the longest uninterrupted hold by one party of a parliamentary seat. Her getting elected was not a massive sudden support for Labour, but a result of tactical voting. She had a tiny, tiny majority, which increased last election. If Labour were to kick her out, Labour would lose the seat.

Jackgrealishscurtains · 26/07/2021 22:24

Kurtis seems like a total dick and is currently on Twitter laughing about suicide.

But Rosie Duffield liked a single tweet of his in which he said a particular thing that she agreed with. Why the fuck she is getting witch hunted once again I have no idea. Policing Twitter likes has to be the absolute most pathetic thing ever.

More on language and dissent.

quillette.com/2021/07/27/rescuing-the-radicalized-discourse-on-sex-and-gender-part-two-of-a-three-part-series/

'What we are left with is an imposed system of language that has no connection to physical reality, or to the “lived experience” of anyone except the tiny subset of a subset that created it. In Orwellian fashion, these activists have locked in their favoured dogma by defining the applicable terminology in such a way that dissent is rendered impossible.'

dyslek · 27/07/2021 14:10

I actually think Kurtis is entirely justified in his anger, and is allowed to express it any way he sees fit.
