This is offensive on so many levels, I don’t even know where to begin.

So is there a general idea that it was trans people who "won" all the rights for gay and lesbian people? I wouldn't have imagined you could put the granting of more rights down to any one individual. What is she on about?

ArriettyJones · 10/07/2020 07:55

@NewNewt

God how pathetic to try and equate GC women with the awful thing that happened to George Floyd.
This.

The frantic nonsense virtue signalling is so tiring.

SerenityNowwwww · 10/07/2020 07:59

@PennyNotSoWise

Shock Those tweets.

"I can't back up what I'm saying with any logic whatsoever so just FUCK OFF".

There’s the level of debate when you can’t back it up.

Marsha Johnson - a drag queen who was clear about being a gay man - is purported to have thrown the first brick at the Stonewall riots. This lie has been repeated ad nauseam so people assume it's true.

Except he wasn't there on day one. The person who started the riot was a black lesbian called Storme Delarverie.

Fred Sergeant, who was actually at the riot, has the real story.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 10/07/2020 08:04

She thinks Marsha P Johnson was trans and the hero of the stonewall riots.

Despite Marsha calling himself (on video) a man and a transvestite (and being elsewhere when the riots started). Marsha did a lot of charitable work for homeless gay youth later, so deserves to be celebrated for who he was and what he did, rather than a load of bullshit designed to make is seem like black transwomen were the key figures in the US gay rights movement.

34.30 for Marsha’s own words on who he was.

NotBadConsidering · 10/07/2020 08:22

There is no logic to the retro transitioning of Marsha P Johnson.

He described himself as gay.
He had sex with men.

These two things are indisputable because it’s what he has said.

So if he was actually a gay woman, why wasn’t he having sex with other women?

The only way to answer this with modern day queer theory is to say:

“Johnson was a woman but didn’t have the language or acceptance of the times to say so. And that also means she was heterosexual, given she had sex with men, but didn’t realise it at the time.”

It’s incredibly homophobic and insulting.

Lifeinthelastlane · 10/07/2020 08:26

I see. Even if all that were true, I don't get the idea that one incident in a prolonged campaign for equal rights means it was all achieved by that individual. I think Martin Luther King was a great man, for example, but there were thousands of people involved in the civil rights movement all doing their part. Her tweet in that regard is really strange even if her facts about the stonewall riot had been accurate.

SerenityNowwwww · 10/07/2020 08:38

Lack of education and critical thinking. People don’t seem to look being twitter for their facts these days.

Remember when you used to read books and magazines, watch documentaries, read interviews?

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 10/07/2020 08:50

It’s clip culture! The internet has made our attention spans shrink. Remember when we listened to a whole album, turning the record over in the middle? Now we skip track before the song has even faded out.

Re Marsha, it’s interesting how articles almost always use the same 2 or three pictures. There are loads more out there, like this one, where he is handing out leaflets and a friend holds a sign with a male-male symbol and a female-female symbol.

And now we aren’t even allowed to put the female symbol on a pack of sanitary towels and apparently ‘homosexual’ really means ‘homogenderist’?
I doubt Marsha would approve.

The language Shirley uses also insinuates that gay rights are ‘won’, as in, we have them now, done, tick!, rather than it being a constant project to protect them, just like women’s rights, or the rights of anyone who isn’t a wealthy able-bodied straight white man! 3 gay men were recently murdered in a park in Reading in broad daylight, FFS, and we still can’t bring ourselves (collectively, as a society) to talk much about extant homophobia.

I know none of us are surprised any more when people we really rate and respect come out with this rubbish..... but this one has really provoked strong feelings of sadness/dismay in me - even this morning getting dressed, choosing a T-shirt and there being about 5 Garbage tshirts in my drawer! I think it’s the combination of her having been an icon for me for decades and the nasty homophobic and racist attitude she’s revealed in these tweets. Just SO disappointing.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 10/07/2020 08:54

Transing the dead once they can no longer speak for themselves is so distasteful. Marsha said he was a gay man and a transvestite. Leave the poor man's corpse in peace.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 10/07/2020 10:34

The footage of Marsha near the end of his life makes it very clear that he is a naturally, feminine, flamboyant man. He dressed in women’s clothes for drag performances and as a transvestite prostitute, but he was happy to be a ‘boy’ under the outfits.
He clearly didn’t have a female gender identity (whatever that is) - he just liked the dressing and used female pronouns and male pronouns interchangeably (which has long been a cultural habit in gay circles and also seen vice versa for some butch women, using a male name and pronoun but not actually believing themselves to be a man, nor wanting others to believe them to be a man, but using male terms as ironic take on heteronormativity).

Anyway, back on topic, Shirley is just regurgitating propagandist bilge read elsewhere - obviously knows nothing about Marsha (so I assume, doesn’t really care either and is just sharing the ‘right on’ opinion for the dopamine hit).

Stluciacharm · 10/07/2020 10:37

It implies quite explicitly that women go out and murder trans people.Shock

SerenityNowwwww · 10/07/2020 10:39

It depends on your definition of the words ‘woman’ and ‘murder’ and ‘literally’.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 10/07/2020 10:52

Hahahahahahaha.

These people always know what a 'woman' is when they want to give someone a shoeing.

Cwenthryth · 10/07/2020 12:20

Sorry, I meant her later tweet admonishing an “allegedly” gay fan for not “doing his homework” and appreciating that trans people “won him all the freedoms he now enjoys”.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 10/07/2020 13:49

her later tweet admonishing an “allegedly” gay fan for not “doing his homework” and appreciating that trans people “won him all the freedoms he now enjoys”.

I'm not a gay man so I can't know how it feels to have my sexuality impugned and my cultural history wrongly explained in rude, condescending and aggressive tweets. But I imagine I'd be a smidgen pissed off.

nevermorelenore · 10/07/2020 14:14

Eww, as others have said, this looks incredibly sad and desperate to be down with the kids. While Shirl is a great performer, I can't imagine my teenage nieces will be eagerly snapping up tickets to see a band who were famous 20 years ago. But social media head pats are better that ticket sales.

I never knew Cherry Lips was about that JT thing. I read the wikipedia page and apparently it's an 'alternative LGBT anthem'. As someone who is part of that alphabet and spent much of the early 00s in alternative gay clubs, err no it isn't. Someone is heavily overestimating the cultural impact of Garbage.

PurpleHoodie · 10/07/2020 14:53

The irony of Shirley Manson's tweet (and her follow up reponses) is that it has made Garbage the band a perfect fit for an EDL/National Front concert.

The racism. The homophobia. The mysogyny.

Shirley is now a poster girl for an NF audience.

SerenityNowwwww · 10/07/2020 14:59

Anything for attention I suppose

Oh well...
A. Who gives much of a shit about Garbage these days?
B. They’re responsible for the worst Bond theme ever.

FairFriday · 10/10/2020 15:41

I use mailchimp for work - flipping doodah from the bank kept popping up every time I logged in because she had recorded a podcast.

I complained to MC - asking if I really had to see her flipping fizzer every time I needed to send an emailed out...

Garbage are garbage. Virus signalling has beens desperate to appear relevent. They're not. We see you for the garbage you are.
