This is offensive on so many levels, I don’t even know where to begin.

They are getting destroyed in the comments. I do feel the emperor’s nakedness is clear for many to see now. There is a definite shift in the replies on such tweets. Good.

SerenityNowwwww · 09/07/2020 20:26

And she’s older than me? Dammit woman, grow the hell up. It’s embarrassing...

QuarantineDream · 09/07/2020 20:29

It's sad really - it's probably because Shirley remains in a state of arrested development, having been a pop ("rock") star, no kids etc. No-one to burst her bubble.

But I do find it absolutely mind-blowing that women in one of the most sexist industries are so keen to prioritise penises. There was an interview the other day in The Times with some female drummer in an all-male band who, when she mentioned 'women' went out of her way to say "by which I include trans women and non-binary people". Because yeah, penises need that much more priority in the music industry. jenniferlawrence_OK.gif

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 09/07/2020 20:33

Fuck, that is SO disappointing. I saw them only last year and there is still something so empowering about Shirley as a front woman. Gutted.

Cwenthryth · 09/07/2020 20:41

This has made me so sad, although I knew Shirley had fully signed up to the TWAW crowd herself - they’re my fave band and I’ve seen them pretty much annually the last few years they’ve been touring (alternating tours that celebrate 20 years since albums were released with ones promoting newer album etc). Their music has been the soundtrack to so many parts of my life, got me through a lot of shit. I had massive crushes on her as well. She talks a lot on stage about how the band has grown up with the fans and at one point referred to “realised genders” (?!). I don’t share her beliefs on gender but I still loved the band and the music and really enjoyed their shows, and free speech and all, so she can believe what she likes. Even danced away with a transwoman I met at one of the gigs, just because I don’t share beliefs about gender doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a rock gig together!

But there’s a bit of a gulf between believing all the gender stuff yourself, and then accusing people who don’t share your belief of murder, essentially. This feels like a kick in the teeth and a really bigoted position for her to take. It’s so clear she has no idea about the complexity of the debate and issues at hand. Yesterday she tweeted @ JKR a tweet from a supposed biologist that appropriated intersex issues to support dodgy analysis of sex, she got rightly trashed for that and has deleted it. Now she’s appropriating BLM. It’s gross, as the kids say.

And yes the Twitter feed is Shirley herself, it’s full of ‘I’ statements usually.

Cwenthryth · 09/07/2020 20:53

This was the tweet she took down after being asked to by 2 intersex advocacy tweeters (both of whom are gender critical btw).

HandsOffMyRights · 09/07/2020 21:16

Good grief. She's really lost the plot in her attempt to get down with the kids.

Cwenthryth · 09/07/2020 22:12

She's really lost the plot in her attempt to get down with the kids

I don’t even think it’s that, or the accusations about publicity for their tour - their tours still do well, there’s a loyal long term fan base.

I think Shirley genuinely believes that it is kind and progressive to ‘believe’ TWAW etc - probably like many or most of us did, before we really thought about the issue and took the time to understand what self-ID really means. She’s privileged, probably hasn’t had to confront the genuine need for single sex spaces in her own life, and because we always want to believe the oppressed class, believes all the lies told by TRAs about what gender critical feminists are or do. She thinks she’s standing for what’s right. She’s got it badly wrong and it just shows ignorance. Along with a hefty dose of being happy to exploit intersex people & the BLM movement. It’s privilege in action.

ChewtonRoad · 09/07/2020 22:37

FFS. 'Push It' was played in heavy rotation years ago when I was on holiday in Finland and always brings back memories of good times there. Not any more.

Things like this make me wonder what goes through people's minds - well, women's minds - to declare things like this, to actively ignore biology and actual facts, and publicly claim that day is night, humans can change sex, and that disagreeing with those views is a crime against humanity.

Shirley and other women - what are you thinking? Why are you denying reality not only for yourself but for 51% of the population of the world? Are you completely ego-driven or are you frightened of what men will think of you if you don't agree with the crap they speak?

If the latter then the easy fix for that is to stop giving the tiniest fuck what men think. Think for yourself and have the courage of it. If driven by ego and the desire to be accepted then you're looking for something that won't last and is insubstantial. Get a fucking grip.

SerenityNowwwww · 09/07/2020 22:51

Well they’d just played the homophobe card. Calling a gay man an ‘alleged homosexual’:

“You ignorant fool. You are allegedly gay? Who do you think won you all the freedoms you now enjoy. Do your homework.“

It’s like watching modern day bear baiting... Fred’s in there... it’s not a fair fight really. Like tweetie pie against wolverine.

Deliriumoftheendless · 09/07/2020 23:00

Ah remember when they did the theme for that great feminist icon James Bond.

The World is Not Enough.

Apt.

Cwenthryth · 09/07/2020 23:19

Oh FFS. Homophobia as well now? The misogyny, intersexphobia and racism wasn’t enough? Fuxache. And we’re the bigots in all this 🙄

At least this has been ratio’d to all hell. She’ll have to apologise for this this one.

Cwenthryth · 09/07/2020 23:20

Sorry, this one

Garbage living up to their name
ScrimpshawTheSecond · 09/07/2020 23:21

'allegedly gay'? Well ... my word.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 09/07/2020 23:22

Condescending, patronising blowhard. Dearie me.

PotholeParadise · 09/07/2020 23:39

What appalled me earlier was there were a number of people replying to say they were trans and loved the tweet, and otherwise, it was tumbleweed. The only trans person I saw saying that the appropriation of George Floyd and BLM was not okay was ... Buck Angel and he's hard as nails about challenging anyone who shouts about TERFs in general. (He is amazing.) Black twitter was speaking up, gender critical twitter was speaking up but trans people who care about social justice? Nada.

That's revealing. Either they didn't see it or they saw it and they were scared to say anything. Not even a, 'thanks for the support, but...'

PotholeParadise · 09/07/2020 23:40

By "didn't see it" I mean "didn't see the issue".

Kljnmw3459 · 09/07/2020 23:49

Who runs their Twitter account?! Surely not Shirley? It's just such total and utter teenaged bs. Ie. Someone with all the confidence and anger but talking rubbish about things they don't fully understand. No disrespect to any teenager but we've all been through that phase.....

Cwenthryth · 10/07/2020 00:02

Having followed the band & their twitter for a long time I’m pretty confident it is Shirley, sadly

Blocking people calling her out too.

PennyNotSoWise · 10/07/2020 00:32

Shock Those tweets.

"I can't back up what I'm saying with any logic whatsoever so just FUCK OFF".

RedToothBrush · 10/07/2020 00:45

@Lifeinthelastlane

(Lyrics from an old song by them - not sure it's very woke now actually)

Boys in the girl's room
Girls in the men's room
You free your mind in your androgyny
Boys in the parlor
They're getting harder
I'll free your mind and your androgyny

Wow they were years ahead of their time writing about the M & S lingerie department.

Seriously though, how many fans do they have in their 20s? Have people in their 20s even heard of Garage?

Who is this fan base which thinks lyrics about boys getting hard is great?

Cos it sure as hell isn't one that strikes me as female. I just get visions of crowds of middle aged men cracking one off to the Idea of cross dressing in the parlour.

Ah.

Got what's going on with those tweets now.

MrsToddsShortcut · 10/07/2020 01:26

I imagine that Shirley may well massively overempathise with transwomen due to her own history of body dysmorphia.

It must be an absolutely hellish thing to live with, but again, this is too much in the public eye not to have given her a chance to read up on it.

The Twitter stuff is both mindblowingly awful and sad.

RedToothBrush · 10/07/2020 01:27

She had anorexia at one point didn't she?
I seem to remember it from the dim distant past.

NotBadConsidering · 10/07/2020 04:34

Well that’s part of the wider issue isn’t it. Thinking you're sympathetic towards people with dysphoria or dysmorphia without appreciating that “trans women” as a collective noun includes people who take photos of themselves with erections in female spaces, videoing themselves masturbating in female spaces, carrying swords and baseball bats and threatening violence and telling women to “suck my girl dick”.

Everyone is sympathetic towards body dysphoria or dysmorphia, but far too many people think trans equals a quiet, timid, post-op transsexual who just wants to live her life. Hopefully some on those replies with examples will help Shirley realise it’s actually the whole spectrum of the male sex.

2BthatUnnoticed · 10/07/2020 06:37

Yikes

So racist, and they don’t even know it

Why do white trans-activists have to appropriate the suffering of Black people every. single. time.

Comparing someone’s gender ID not being “affirmed” to George Floyd being cruelly murdered in cold blood? Seriously?

I know their music is very white (nothing wrong with that) and they are trying to market their tour to white liberals (ditto)

But why be so racist and gross about it?
