Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Showing that feminists don't all hate heterosexual male sexuality

OK so I am talking about consensual adult sexuality only.

I think there is a feeling, imo an incorrect one, but still a feeling, among many straight men that feminism wants to impose celibacy on all straight men, and hates and derides any expression of male sexuality.
Now, while I think this is unfounded, I wonder sometimes if there is any mileage in perhaps showing some compassion for the difficulties that many straight men encounter in their personal lives in general, and perhaps even that the pain of sexual or romantic frustration is no less real (and perhaps heightened by societal expectations of the straight male stud) for this group of people than anyone else. I have nothing but contempt for the so-called incels who clearly despise and feel entitled to women, and for men who express disdain for and behave badly to women in other ways, but I do think it may do some good to counter the message that you sometimes hear that feminism is anti-men, and showing that there is probably a societal bias against and fear of male sexuality in general. I hope you understand what I mean.

I remember that, Bernard. It's one of the reasons why there was such a kerfuffle when she did the FHM cover in her undies - lots of "My god, she took off her glasses and clothes and now she's stunning!" I don't really get Duchovny, he's a bit rubber faced, she no way was she ever not in his league. But she was presented as buttoned up, career focused, sceptical of all the conspiracy stuff. Not sexy.

BigGee · 11/07/2020 11:15

Gillian Anderson has been my husband's fantasy women forever, and he thought her portrayal of Scully was incredibly sexy and attractive. He remembers being pissed off about the FHM cover as he liked having her to himself!!! Suddenly every male friend was going "gosh, I had no idea she was so gorgeous". It put his nose right out of joint.

BaronessSlighterThanThou · 11/07/2020 11:50

Floralbunting is on form!

Excellent posts.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 11/07/2020 11:59

a friend once shyly admitted that his fantasy woman was sarah beaney of channel 4 property programmes. when pressed as to why, he mentioned her aura of brisk competence. so maybe it's not just women who are attracted to someone who looks to be doing a decent job of adulting?

BigGee · 11/07/2020 12:03

I suppose I'd look at someone who found child-like helplessness sexually stimulating in an entirely different light. Not a particularly flattering one, either.

SophocIestheFox · 11/07/2020 12:09

From an unpromising start, this thread has got it all!

I was swooningly in love with both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson when I was a wee x files nerd. Both utterly gorgeous - she has definitely aged better though.

SophocIestheFox · 11/07/2020 12:12

If no one else in the thread wants Hemsworth, I’ll happily take him off your hands. I like a burly fella. Not remotely attracted to aggressive ultra macho types though. I work with a lot (investment banking) and it all just screams desperate insecurity- mummy issues, worry over seeming gay, anxiety over size, who knows? These are not attractive traits.

BigGee · 11/07/2020 12:35

He's all yours, Sophocles. Just leave me Keanu.....

SophocIestheFox · 11/07/2020 12:38

Deal Grin

FloralBunting · 11/07/2020 12:41

aww. There's truly someone for everyone. Warms the heart.

BigGee · 11/07/2020 12:57

My cockles are toasting as we speak, FloralBunting. Love is all around, indeed. I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toooooooeeees......

The Did-You-Come-Yets of the Western World

When he says to you:
You look so beautiful
you smell so nice –
how I've missed you –
and did you come yet?

It means nothing,
and he is smaller
than a mouse's fart.

Don't listen to him...
Go to Annaghdown Pier
with your father's rod.
Don't necessarily hold out
for the biggest one;
oftentimes the biggest ones
are the smallest in the end.

Bring them all home,
but not together.
One by one is the trick;
avoid red herrings and scandal.

Maybe you could take two
on the shortest day of the year.
Time is the cheater here
not you, so don't worry.

Many will bite the usual bait;
they will talk their slippery way
through fine clothes and expensive perfume,
fishing up your independence.

These are
the did-you-come-yets of the western world,
the feather and fin rufflers.
Pity for them they have no wisdom.

Others will bite at any bait.
Maggot, suspender, or dead worm.
Throw them to the sharks.

In time one will crawl
out from under thigh-land.
Although drowning he will say,
‘Woman I am terrified, why is this house
shaking?

And you’ll know he’s the one.

Christ - mas is all around me, and so the feeling grooows.

Actually, on topic, the only bit of Love, Actually that still makes me smile indulgently rather than cringe at the creepy nature of what is going on is the relationship between Bill Nighy and Gregor Fisher and that's a whole film about heterosexual males and their 'romantic' behaviour.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 11/07/2020 13:09

My god Scrimpshaw, what a great poem.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 11/07/2020 13:18

BernardBlack, my husband liked Sarah Beaney because she has big tits.

Dervel · 11/07/2020 13:36

I didn’t think Floral said anything remotely offensive. Given her preferences male sexuality is hardly an area of personal interest.

That said I quite agree about Gillian Anderson, I met her once and she is as charming as she is gorgeous.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 11/07/2020 18:44

I think the tits thing was also a factor to be honest marvellousnightforamooncup, even if he didn't want to talk about it

QuentinWinters · 11/07/2020 19:22

I take it you googled for those articles alison
The first one is interesting in a feminist context I think. The authors conclusion is "Men showed higher desire than women, but masturbation frequency rather than T influenced this difference"
Men want more sex because they wank more, rather than because they are male. I think differing attitudes towards male and female masturbation (with female still being negatively perceived too often)

The second article basically found that women being sexually submissive leads to both partners being less satisfied unless the woman likes being submissive. Big wow there

TehBewilderness · 11/07/2020 20:48

@BernardBlackMissesLangCleg

agreed regarding men's orgasms and the responsibility for them

back to GA for a moment. I rewatched all 8 original series of the x-files recently. i picked up an underlying assumption that Mulder was super hot and Scully wasn't quite in his league, and that was part of the reason for the 'will they won't they' tension

apparently after series 1 there were moves to replace GA with someone more stereotypically attractive

funny old world innit? I mean she's beautiful, right? I wonder if the attitudes were because she was carrying a bit more weight back then?

They paid him way more than her too, until the day of reckoning.
TheProdigalKittensReturn · 12/07/2020 07:09

Clearly we're going to need some sort of timeshare scheme for Keanu. On the "evidence" provided, it doesn't say what the person who provided it thinks it does, so (shrugs).

I always thought Gillian Anderson was out of Duchovney's league, am baffled that anyone could have though otherwise no matter how unflattering the clothes they put her in were. He looked like an unmade bed half the time anyway.

BigGee · 12/07/2020 09:16

Bugger off, Keanu is MINE!!!! Mine, I tell you. What's this "sharing" nonsense???

Langsdestiny · 12/07/2020 10:13

Female solidarity didnt last long there BigGeeGrin.

BigGee · 12/07/2020 10:19

I identify as a non-sharer. Sorry not sorry lol

BigGee · 12/07/2020 10:21

I'll split Sam Clafin if there are any takers, though? He's young, he's got stamina.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 12/07/2020 10:29

Not a single clue who that is.
