Yes, really.

Someone on the thread claims that she isn't claiming hair dye alters biology, merely pointing out that:

"'t*rfs' (his word not mine) cling to the argument that trans people are at odds with their own biology, but then they readily alter their own bodies to suit their needs when their biology no longer suits them."

Which is the nearest thing I've seen to a rational interpretation of her tweet, but even if that is what she's trying to say, it's a weak argument: no one gives a shit what (adult) trans people do with their own bodies, that's their business; we just don't think it makes them a woman or in may way entitled to any of the legal protections women need, any more than dyeing your hair makes you a natural blonde/ten years younger/a woman/anything other than a person with dyed hair.

@crumpet

Perhaps “Just for Men” could help us all break the glass ceiling.

@Collidascope

Speaking of people getting their information off Twitter:

mobile.twitter.com/FlLMGIRLTHOT/status/1277738014043713539

I just... How do these people get through a day without exploding in a grand conflagration of their own terrifying stupidity and outrage?
The "omg she evil" and dumbass GIFs. Jesus Christ.

That thread gets even more batshit:

"Some one pointed out to me the other day to re-read the way Rita Skeeter is described as looking, in the books.

Keep in mind she's also an 'unregistered Animagus', so she can 'change her form to sneak into places she is not meant to be'

I fucking. Rowling is pure evil."

I'm agog.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 30/06/2020 18:49

I had previously paid no attention to the HP fandom. Were they always this barmy?

ShagMeRiggins · 30/06/2020 18:52

I knew American education system is bad but this is priceless

Any worse than in the UK?

I don’t see why you need to drag Americans or the education system into this thread simply because Mara Wilson is American and tweeted something uninformed and illogical, Imnobody4. It’s hugely insulting, not to mention ignorant and possibly xenophobic.

picklemewalnuts · 30/06/2020 18:53

She claims to have written "True Stories of Girlhood"! I mean that's transphobic surely? How does she know she was a girl? She may become a man next year, which means she was actually a boy all along.

D'you think someone should tell her?

TyroSaysMeow · 30/06/2020 19:00

Having spent my formative years in HP fandom, I can confirm: yes, we they were always this barmy. First furry I ever met was in in HP fandom; everyone I ever knew there seems to have come out as some flavour of queer these days.

Can't remember the Rita Skeeter description; my GoF reread stalled a week or so back just after the fourth champion was announced. Must get back to it and see what's so objectionable about it.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 30/06/2020 19:06

Jeez doesn't anyone proof read for these people before tweeting, they sound like complete idiots, or stuck at about 8 or 9 years old.

JunoJigglewick · 30/06/2020 19:12

I've read her tweet and some of the responses to it. I'm not quite sure I understand what point she is trying to make.

Is it: becoming a different gender is as easy as dyeing hair?

Or your biological sex changes when you make cosmetic changes to your body?

Is it?

Confused
JunoJigglewick · 30/06/2020 19:14

Although may be it is down to biology that my mum and her two estranged sister's all went prematurely blonde around mid 50s from their natural dark brown (greying) hair. Maybe it was a quirk of the menopause?

AuntyFungal · 30/06/2020 19:30

If they’ve created a magic hair dye - why doesn’t my wrinkle cream work?

It’s got to be a piss take?

insideandout3 · 30/06/2020 19:35

Shall I start a petition to rename hair dye into 'gender fluid'?

itsor · 30/06/2020 21:11

Mara, Mara, Mara. You really thought this was a good take? I used to have a lot of respect for you.

Geez, she's older than me and she still looked at that tweet and thought 'yep, that's it, you go girl'?

QuarantineDream · 30/06/2020 21:41

Does that mean if you dye your hair "unicorn" you turn into an actual unicorn?

SerenityNowwwww · 30/06/2020 21:45

What if you are bald?

picklemewalnuts · 30/06/2020 21:50

Rita Skeeter is described in an unsympathetic way, if I recall.

However retrospectively interpreting 'unregistered animagus so she can sneak into places she isn't meant to be' as an attack on trans women is just, well, um, Freudian?

I mean, it says more about their thinking than JKR.

JunoJigglewick · 30/06/2020 21:50

@SerenityNowwwww depends if you feel bald or if you feel like you have a full head of flowing locks.

SerenityNowwwww · 30/06/2020 21:55

Well I pretty much shaved my whole head when I was a teenager. I had previously had waist length hair. It felt good. Now it’s long and I like that too.

Oh ex child actor of limited acting ability, what shall I do?

CourtneyLurve · 30/06/2020 22:12

She's written extensively about her career in film ending because she outgrew her cuteness and is clearly still very bitter about it. Now, she's riding the tiny bit of leftover recognition and parroting SJW-type slogans without any independent or intelligent insight for likes. It's all very sad.

SerenityNowwwww · 30/06/2020 22:33

She wasn’t cute (just sayin) and acting wasn’t good either...

newrubylane · 30/06/2020 23:17

"Rita had a heavy-jawed face, elaborate and curiously rigid blonde curls, heavily penciled eyebrows, jewelled spectacles, large, mannish hands and long crimson fingernails."
(potter-encyclopaedia.fandom.com/wiki/Rita_Skeeter)

I'm guessing they think Rowling was implying she was trans with the heavy jaw and mannish hands?

OP posts:
TyroSaysMeow · 30/06/2020 23:24

What, cos all cunty-type women are delicate little flowers with tiny hands? And if we're not, we must really be men?

And anyway, if Rita Skeeter were actually a male trans person, then surely, being a non-Muggle, she'd have magically altered her jawline and hand size? We know that sort of thing's possible, Madame Pomfrey did it to Hermione's teeth.

(I can't believe I'm actually giving this brainspace. What does a "heavy jaw" look like anyway? I'm rubbish at face descriptions, never really did get this one, and google isn't helping.)

Deliriumoftheendless · 01/07/2020 00:04

I started bleaching my hair when I was 13 - I knew as a child I should be blonde. I’ll probably still be doing it when I am 60 because as we all know, children absolutely know who they ought to be (unlike middle age women) so don’t tell me I’m wrong, you’re basically abusing a child (me, in the past. You have made Past Me cry now.)

picklemewalnuts · 01/07/2020 08:54

I think they are reaching- she's describing an aggressive female character. She also had a sickly sweet torturing pink kitten woman (brain fog, can't get her name). Caricatures.
