Yes, that's the second wave of your innate transphobic kicking in.

Not only are you not kind to those poor discriminated against trans people you don't believe they have always been the sex they say they are.

That makes you a Double Bad Non Trans Woman!

Continuing with this logic, what do piercings mean on a symbolic level? What if you have them and then take them out, have you changed sex then?

As someone in the replies pointed out it's actually a brilliant analogy for the whole trans debate. Viz and to wit you can chemically alter the external appearance of your body but underneath it remains exactly the same as it always was. Oh - and the chemicals are probably causing untold damage.

Well judging by the colour my hair is currently dyed, I'm not actually human any more

I don't know if people say things like this because they have so much privilege that they can't imagine being in a situation where they wouldn't have the resources to control the impact of sex, or if they are just in denial.

Particularly odd in the US where access to birth control is under threat.

Ha, I saw this the other day and thought this has to be in the top 5 dumbest tweets out there.

Does Mara Wilson think that once a woman with grey hair dyes her hair brown or red, that's it she has actually changed her biology? That she will never have to dye her hair again, won't have to dye it every three six weeks to stop the natural roots showing?

It's just so fucking thick I can't even believe she typed it out to be honest, I'm cringing for her.

Arrrgh, someone on that thread saying that because bleach literally changes the structure of you hair and you can't wash it out, it has changed your biology! 😂😂😂

How come I have to get the roots done on my bleached hair every few weeks then you absolute fucking plonker? Honestly, I think this argument for why men can be women might actually win the award for stupidest thing I have ever seen on the Internet.

According to Wikipedia:
Wilson is a maternal cousin of right-wing commentator Ben Shapiro. Wilson, who is outspokenly liberal, has blocked Shapiro on social media platforms. She stated, “Growing up is great because you get to choose which relatives you want to spend time with and which ones to cut out of your life without any regret.”

This just made me laugh so much.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at Mara and the eejits trying to back her up there. The replies from GC people are hilarious though.

I'm sure there are people who still have natural blonde or red hair at 60.

However it's good to know that dyeing your hair alters your biology. I will be sure to let my roots know next time they come through.

A lot of Americans are now either don't understand, or are actively 'anti science' it would appear, and this is just one example. It's starting to cause them real problems with the coronavirus (quoting Dr Fauci here).

Obviously we have to be polite and tactful on here , but I often just think to myself 'you sound as if you're really fucking stupid' when I read posts on here about transwomen are women and some men have periods and the rest of the nonsense.

I thought she was joking when I saw it. I also thought she was quite bright but it looks like I was very very wrong.

Spot on.

I'd like to add that most appear to get their "facts" from Twitter/Facebook and because someone (who could be anyone and rarely someone they know) on there said something it must be true.

can I ask a dumbish question
If you are a transman do you usually take hormones & do those hormones stop periods? (yes I know about the transman - cant remember name who went on to give birth & than tried to get themselves put on birth cert as dad. I wonder if he was on hormones & took himself off?)

I don't think anyone is saying "you can't change your biology" are they? Every time I take the pill I'm changing "my biology". People are saying you can't change sex. Dying your hair does not change your sex, taking/blocking hormones does not change your sex. Why is it so hard to understand?!

Report
MasterGland · 30/06/2020 16:30

Hmm. You change your phenotype by dyeing your hair, and your phenotype is part of your "Biology". Dyeing your hair does not change the underlying genotype, of course. I don't know which she meant, but I am getting tired of the misuse and misunderstanding of science in the public sphere. (sorry for barging in on your topic)

Exactly this! I kind of get what she was trying to say but ultimately she is talking about people (women, obvs) altering their external appearance to pretend to be something they are not (blonde, young etc) and comparing this to the trans movement so, in effect, agreeing that trans people are pretending to be something they are not.

Wonderful own goal there, Mara!

Um, biology is how the women in my hair have red hair at sixty. It doesn't always come out of a bottle, y'know? Honestly, she's completely erasing the lived experience of natural born redheads, and we get a shit enough deal as it is. Looks like gingerphobia to me.
