Do you think JK knew what would happen?

She's hinted her views before, but this is the most clearly outspoken she has been. The backlash has been pretty awful tbh. I'm not sure I 100% agree with everything she is saying, but I do not like how she has been treated. Why the world is acting like she has made some 'Trump-like' statement I dont know. Perhaps because being trans is the most recent trending vulnerable group to gain support and influence? So it's a very risky thing to talk about? The fact it can't even be discussed is pretty sad.

I wonder if she realised this would happen. Do you think she had higher hopes that some other admirable high profile names would come to her aid, or at least have a healthy debate? Does she know people who have let her down? Perhaps they realised last minute that it was just too risky a move here's looking at you Dan Radcliffe. I can almost see him sending her a private message "Sorry Jo, really can't do this right now! I'm too young and I need the money from my next woke gig!" Or has he really truly lost touch with her and decided to break ties? Or did she really just decide throw it out there and hope for the best?

A part of me thinks she knew it all along. She is very good at standing out from the crowd. She had had incredible lows in her life. Even if she spends the foreseeable future in a downward disgrace, she has publicly planted a seed and now the initial heat is over people are starting to talk. The BBC even has an article on the Dan Rad response and links to articles about gender critical and what this means for women. I think they are being surprisingly unbiased actually.

The future starts here?

I just hope this doesn't scar her too much.

No idea what she said btw!

Oh, it was something crazy like "women have periods" and "I care deeply for trans people but sex exists."
You know, really offensive, heretical stuff that no sane person would ever think...

DonLewis · 09/06/2020 15:48

Ffs. Grateful.

Barracker · 09/06/2020 15:50

I'm certain she knew.

She's been following this carnival for years. I think she just chose her moment.

I imagine she's been dying to say this ever since her idiot PR person suggested she had fat thumbs.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 09/06/2020 15:52

I see messages throughout the Ickabog Grin The small voice of truth telling the King he knew what had actually happened, but drowned out by fear of being laughed at. The soldiers not speaking out because of fears for their families. It all seems to be one giant metaphor Grin
And yes, I am sure she knew what she was doing.

334bu · 09/06/2020 15:54

Although MSM have not opened articles for comment when they post them in Twitter most comments are in support of JK, even the Guardian and Trump's pet hate CNN. Maybe the world isn't crazy after all?

TooOldForSims · 09/06/2020 15:56

What the previous poster said about attacks on the street is worrying, though. Some of them are horrible enough to actually try it, I suspect. The thought that she might need bodyguards is pretty horrifying.

I'm worried about this too. I really hope nobdo actually carries out any of their threats.

SorrelBlackbeak · 09/06/2020 15:58

Well lockdown is still in effect so it's comparatively easy for her to stay safe and anyone idiot trying to attack her to be arrested, she's unlikely to be out and about.

That's also probably contributing to the shrieking. Lots of bored people who haven't left the house for months and aren't centre of attention...

TooOldForSims · 09/06/2020 16:00

*nobody

ifonlyus · 09/06/2020 16:05

It's disgusting to see the backlash she is getting - it's so personal and vicious and witch-trial like. I like to think she knew what she was doing - she's a very clever woman. A spotlight has been shone on the ludicrousness of the trans-cult and for all those who shout TWAW, others will be newly exposed and rolling their eyes.

I can't see her commercial success dying, if that is at all a worry to her. My dad is not particularly easy to please when it comes to books he reads but the 'Robert Galbraith' books are always on his list of things to buy him. HP does not define her success. There are plenty of strings to her bow and she has a history of being incognito so could do so again.

langclegflavoredbananamush · 09/06/2020 16:06

She's been following this carnival for years. I think she just chose her moment.

I think so too- her timing with her tweet in support of Maya was so perfect. And I wonder if she sees the tsunami of nastiness as a way to make more people (for example, the parents engaging with the Ickabog) aware that this ideology is a real threat that needs to be confronted instead of placated.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 09/06/2020 16:08

I don't see how she couldn't have known. She's tipped her toes in the water a few times on this, and she's an intelligent woman.

I imagine she's been sitting on her hands for some time on this one, but the TRAs spamming the Ickabog hastag - WHERE CHILDREN COULD POST THEIR PICTURES - with death threats, "fuck you TERF", and threatening to add dick picks* may have tipped her over the edge.

*Not sure if they went as far as posting dick pics. I only saw the threats. Nothing would surprise me, however. Nothing screams male rage, men's rights activism & just old fashioned male privilege quite so much as forcing others to look at their penis.

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 16:16

This isn't her first rodeo.

She has been vocal about Scottish independence and Jeremy Corbyn and Brexit.

I think this is the first time that she has tweeted in a way that has caused offence to left leaning people in the US, but she has certainly faced criticism over Johnny Depp and perceived racism in her books and films.

If this doesn't die down people who have been sitting on the fence will be forced to comment, and genderism can't withstand sunlight.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/06/2020 16:18

@Lottapianos

Shes a very smart woman and no doubt was expecting it. I would love to know what she thinks about Daniel Radcliffe's weaselly, cowardly, no doubt PR-written statement this morning. I hope she puts it down to him being a sad little woke bro with no skin in the game, but I wouldn't blame her if she felt extremely hurt
Yes, I think so - this isn't her first rodeo. I wonder if she knew that the DR would put h'self as a spineless weasel?
Lordfrontpaw · 09/06/2020 16:20

Sorry I take it back. Weasels are rather cute little critters:

OpenTheCurtainsPleaseDear · 09/06/2020 16:22

She is amazing and will be influential woman children are taught about in school once this has blown over.

BaronessFloralBunting · 09/06/2020 16:22

Reading her Cormoran Strike books, I’d say she is pro-trans, as there are sympathetic portraits of trans people in more than one of them. Or maybe Cormoran just works in an unusually trans-heavy bit of London.

I think she just dislikes mindless shouting.

I have to just reference this and do my periodic reminder that talking about sex and women's rights and protections is not 'anti trans'. Trans is only relevant to women where it affects those rights, and it is a view held by most women here that you can live and identify as you please, but sex will always be a relevant factor in campaigning for women's rights. So JKR talking/writing about people who ID as trans in a positive way isn't even slightly surprising, because being pro-women is not being anti-trans, and those that insist on defining it this way are very clearly suggesting that to be 'pro-trans' is to be anti-women, which is the ruddy complaint we have!!

Michelleoftheresistance · 09/06/2020 16:26

She wrote the words 'when the time comes where you have to choose between what is easy and what is right...'

She knows. She's got the balls to do this. And what she is saying is that it is possible to be sympathetic to and supportive of trans people and not pretend biology doesn't exist and hand over female rights on a plate.

She's proved, without doubt, that the transactivist lobby believe it is not possible. You cannot value and care about female rights and obey the dictats of the transactivist political lobby, they are saying so, loudly and with death threats. They are saying that 'trans rights' is actually the removal/surrender of female rights.

Male supremacism. We've been calling it out for years, but they've put it in plain sight today via Idiot Radcliffe.

DisobedientHamster · 09/06/2020 16:27

I find her incredibly brave. I think she knew. She's the ultimate Gryffindor.

PurpleHoodie · 09/06/2020 16:32

How is the #nodebate going for the transgenderists?

PurpleHoodie · 09/06/2020 16:33

Many Transsexuals seem quite open to discussion however....

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 16:35

They have decided to claim it for themselves, one fool even said they would produce and an anthology of fanfic HP stories pretending they had thought up the characters.

They do realize that if they attempted to publish something like that she could sue them, right?

teawamutu · 09/06/2020 16:35

I think she lit the fuse knowing full well what would happen. By making such simple, factual statements she's exposed the whole seething mass of insanity and viciousness.

I adore her.

RuffleCrow · 09/06/2020 16:38

Alyssum you're obviously here to spread doom. Perhaps you're very young and overly invested in what others think yourself? Most of us 35 plus single mums have been through too much to give a solitary shit. Imagine how much less we'd care if we had her money. Biscuit

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 09/06/2020 16:38

She's clued up about Twitter and media, and this is not the first time she's stepped into this controversy, so yeah she must have known.

There is nothing controversial about what she said; it was simple, clear and obvious - it's quite fun to see people who disagree with her digging themselves into woke, unscientific, illogical holes.

That said she must have balls of steel Grin I hope she is on MN and can see how many people are with her.

BaronessFloralBunting · 09/06/2020 16:39

Quite so. It's quite mentally and emotionally stressful to both watch the response and receive part of it myself over time, but I know it is part of a battle strategy to illustrate that transextremists will not allow anyone to support trans people without also shitting on women.
