Do you think JK knew what would happen?

She's hinted her views before, but this is the most clearly outspoken she has been. The backlash has been pretty awful tbh. I'm not sure I 100% agree with everything she is saying, but I do not like how she has been treated. Why the world is acting like she has made some 'Trump-like' statement I dont know. Perhaps because being trans is the most recent trending vulnerable group to gain support and influence? So it's a very risky thing to talk about? The fact it can't even be discussed is pretty sad.

I wonder if she realised this would happen. Do you think she had higher hopes that some other admirable high profile names would come to her aid, or at least have a healthy debate? Does she know people who have let her down? Perhaps they realised last minute that it was just too risky a move here's looking at you Dan Radcliffe. I can almost see him sending her a private message "Sorry Jo, really can't do this right now! I'm too young and I need the money from my next woke gig!" Or has he really truly lost touch with her and decided to break ties? Or did she really just decide throw it out there and hope for the best?

A part of me thinks she knew it all along. She is very good at standing out from the crowd. She had had incredible lows in her life. Even if she spends the foreseeable future in a downward disgrace, she has publicly planted a seed and now the initial heat is over people are starting to talk. The BBC even has an article on the Dan Rad response and links to articles about gender critical and what this means for women. I think they are being surprisingly unbiased actually.

The future starts here?

I just hope this doesn't scar her too much.

But we knew there were a load of cnuts though. And considering what they are...

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 09/06/2020 19:09

I used to use Clue.

And then I heard the CEO on the radio. Bloke. Some interesting ideas about women and their biology.

I no longer use clue.

Thisismytimetoshine · 09/06/2020 19:12

They're so inaptly named, aren't they? Clue... they haven't a single one.
They're half right, though.
Woman does not equal uterus.
Uterus very definitely equals woman.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you.

I just cannot get my head around what a cheeky fucker DR is for basically apologising for JKR referencing the books she bloody wrote and that are responsible for his career.

What an arrogant banker!

TehBewilderness · 09/06/2020 19:19

@StampMc

She absolutely knew. She was in the papers a couple of years ago for liking a “transphobic” tweet and she backpeddled saying she had a middle aged moment. She won’t have just forgotten that happened. She’s just had enough I guess
It was her agent/spox who said that. I assumed she got fired. Her support for Forstater was unequivocal. That was when she seemed to know what was coming and decided to be explicit.

So that is why henceforth all mammals will be referred to as herbivores regardless of what they eat. It's all the Feminists fault!!!

Tell me more about this ickabog thing. How do I sign up?

Thanks for times links, I’ve spent too long on Twitter today and it was just refreshing to read sensible comments from the general public, and you amazing strong GC women of mumsnet even though sometimes it feels like we are lone voices against the men’s rights activists we really aren’t it’s just the twitter sphere can sometimes feel like that.

TRAs are now pushing the idea that JK took the name 'Robert Galbraith' from a 20th century anti-gay American doctor.

This is what JK actually said about choosing the name Robert Galbraith:

I chose Robert because it is one of my favourite men’s names, because Robert F Kennedy is my hero and because, mercifully, I hadn’t used it for any of the characters in the Potter series or The Casual Vacancy.

Galbraith came about for a slightly odd reason. When I was a child, I really wanted to be called ‘Ella Galbraith’, and I’ve no idea why. I don’t even know how I knew that the surname existed, because I can’t remember ever meeting anyone with it. Be that as it may, the name had a fascination for me. I actually considered calling myself L A Galbraith for the Strike series, but for fairly obvious reasons decided that initials were a bad idea.

Odder still, there was a well-known economist called J K Galbraith, something I only remembered by the time it was far too late. I was completely paranoid that people might take this as a clue and land at my real identity, but thankfully nobody was looking that deeply at the author’s name.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 09/06/2020 20:03

The newspaper comments lately have been mostly GC. People in the real world who are worried about losing jobs, getting sick, no school etc have no time for the self centered, narc crap.

There are people (kids) on twitter now tweeting Universal Studios now asking if it's safe for trans people and if they are happy profiting from a transphobe.

Yeah, they will immediately knock down the £300 million roller coaster and all other HP rides and the big Hogwarts that are the reasons for them winning theme park of the year 5 years in a row and attracting millions of visitors.

LouHotel · 09/06/2020 20:13

I think that after the accidental copy and paste on the ickabog she just thought fuck it. It would have still happened this year but I don't think the timing is completely planned.

I bought some Harry Potter cup cakes today in solidarity.

RevIMJolly · 09/06/2020 20:49

Just popping upstairs to read Harry Potter now.

I had forgotten how wonderful it is.

Thank you JKR

RevIMJolly · 09/06/2020 21:12

Just seen that the secondary school Harry was supposed to go to was called Stonewall High.

he had a lucky escape Grin

Are Universal Studios safe for Trans people?

Ans. Yes. We adhere to the highest possible health and safety standards for all our customers. We have a dedicated safety officer, and are subject to regular inspections by external auditors to ensure the highest possible compliance with all relevant regulations.

I'm sure that would be satisfactory

Lordfrontpaw · 09/06/2020 22:36

I doubt it. Not a specially named safety officer, numerous safe spaces, women free areas etc.

Melia100 · 09/06/2020 22:57

most people seemed happy to remove HP from schools

They will, without irony, also tweet the hell out of Banned Books Month.

You're never on the right side of history if you're standing with the book burners, literal or metaphoric.

stumbledin · 09/06/2020 23:03

Thanks for the Times article link. Its quite a slight article. But then maybe that's because it just states the facts.

And good to see the comments. This just confirms to me what I said in my earlier posts that other papers do not open comments of trans agenda articles as 99.9% of the comments relfect that people know the reality of biology.

Also, the link I posted didn't work, so in case anyone wants to see a "cis lesbian" toeing the trans party line here it is again. www.independent.co.uk/voices/jk-rowling-transphobia-lesbian-feminism-blm-harry-potter-a9556296.html

Urgh posted too soon. But, basically, yes to the above!

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 10/06/2020 01:08

New Times article just appeared (don't think anyone's posted it yet) and so far the comments are storming! I've only read the first few highest-recommended ones as yet, but they are all supporting JK and there is a big post from a transwidow too (not sure if it's someone on here or not - hello if so!) - great stuff! Even if the article itself is a bit woolly:

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 10/06/2020 04:49

I’d be delighted if journalists actually did their jobs, (you know, investigating stuff, interviewing people), instead of just regurgitating what people say on Twitter.

It’s hard to trust the media when they’re just picking and choosing sound grabs from social media randoms. It’s lazy reporting, but I suppose it’s cheap and the work experience intern can do it.

Wondersense · 10/06/2020 05:27

I think she knew it could happen and was prepared for that. What matters most to her is her family and her writing. She's so rich now she can afford to self-publish & self-market. I think she's pretty confident that even though some people might want to stop reading her work, most people will carry on. In her books, bravery in the face of adversity is a big theme and is probably something she respects as a Gryffindor. I imagine she had a look in the mirror one day and could no linger justify keeping quiet when she has such enormous wealth to protect herself, unlike most people.

pachyderm · 10/06/2020 05:46

It's shameful how many news outlets have not quoted what she actually said. Because they know that if they did, the majority of people would agree with it.
