Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

They do seem to be awfully unwilling to discuss parenthood, you are quite correct.

Flowers for JKR FlowersFlowers

Blackdoggotmytonguestill · 09/06/2020 17:28

Lol. That poor bloke with the female baby is way outta his league. He can’t even formulate his own opinion now. Just mindlessly flooping around ‘dan = good. Er, read. Something. Don’t know.’ Well done, chap. Good show. You stick it to people formerly known as women that aren’t allowed to use that term without including penis-havers any more. Good job.
Your daughter got a penis, has she? Did you do the whole ‘assign gender by virtue of how the child reacts to a onesie’ thing?
Ffs.
How utterly fucking stupid do you have to be to pick that username and attempt to argue TWAW.
Anyhoo. Sorry mate. Displaced anger at someone who doesn’t have the mental capacity to argue back. It’s really not on. I’m just pissed off generally that our daughters are going to have to deal with fiction being enshrined in law, leaving the facts and absolute reality of their lives unprotected.
I’m fucking raging.
Look. I’ve been where you are. I can probably even dig up hundreds of posts of me telling Dittany to be kind in days of yore. But once you start applying critical thinking instead of following the ‘women must always appease men even if it costs them everything’ route, you can’t go back.
I’m not cisgender. Gender is a dangerous set of social expectations that imprison. And the fucking numpties are trying to enshrine imprisoning expectations in law, instead of saying ‘fuck gender.’
Perhaps I’m fucking menopausal too. Gah.

ExSortingHat · 09/06/2020 17:28

Okay, okay....

I'll admit I messed up and have sent in my resignation effective immediately.

I knew I should have put the little fucker in Slytherin.

northender · 09/06/2020 17:29

Haven't read the whole thread, but have been following the antics on Twitter and just wanted to add my whole hearted support for JK. Unfortunately I don't feel able to support on Twitter

Annasgirl · 09/06/2020 17:29

The Times piece was great - so many normal people who agree with us, sometimes, when you read the newspaper or watch TV it is as if the world has been taken over by a new religion that you know is bonkers but that everyone else believes in (or pretends to believe in, kind of like many religious people for centuries). JKR is wonderful and as for the person who became rich and famous due to reciting her words - well, the less said the better and you guys have all said it better than me.

BTW - did any of you see the report about Jonathan Ross, who has now been reeducated by his teen DD so he now sees the light that TWAW and JKR is wrong? Or "wong" as he likes to say....

BaronessFloralBunting · 09/06/2020 17:31

I have an obsession with women and their rights. I'm bloody notorious for it. Screeching hysterically about it all the bloody time. In the olden days, we called it feminism, but nowadays it goes by the name of "Oh that's so boring." Language evolves, doncha know? Sexism remains.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/06/2020 17:34

I don’t have an “obsession with trans people” . I do, however, feel very keen indeed that my 13 year old daughter isn’t faced by an adult male in her changing room when she goes swimming. Is that “obsessed” ?
What a strange thing to say to women who want to preserve single sex space, and women as a political class.
We have single sex spaces because they preserve the safety and dignity of women. Should my teenage daughters have to give that up ? Should my mother in law, who is in her eighties ?

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 17:35

And the fucking numpties are trying to enshrine imprisoning expectations in law, instead of saying ‘fuck gender.’

Yup.

Stressing · 09/06/2020 17:36

I feel so sad and confused. Our minds are being fucked with by identity everything. Sane voices are being marginalised. Sensible debate stamped out. How the hell can anyone without a uterus have a period? Why is society even debating this? Why aren’t we allowed to think for ourselves anymore? We’re being bullied into confirming to modern ideals that have the potential to corrupt judgement. This is no good for women.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/06/2020 17:36

I am guessing that @Newdadtogirl can’t answer the questions we have asked, which is why he is so studiedly ignoring them.

Shall I try again?

How can a surgeon make a biological male into a biological female?
How can they create a functioning vagina out of a hollowed out and inverted penis? Will that vagina self lubricate? Will it remain patent (open) all on its own? Will it self clean? Will it expand to allow a baby through and go back to its former size? (Hint - the answer is no).

Equally - can the surgeon make a real, functioning penis ant testes or just a simulacrum?

How do you know your daughter is a girl?

Would you be happy for her to take cross sex hormones and puberty blockers, have a double mastectomy, and a chunk of skin and underlying flesh taken to create a neo-phallus for her?

And how are women supposed to discuss our oppression, and matters pertaining to our female biology, if you deny the facts of that biology by saying trans women are women?

Oh - and if your daughter is a lesbian, would you be happy with her being told she must accept penetrative sex with a person with a penis, because the penis-haver has said the magic words “I am a woman so I am a lesbian” and “This is a lady-penis so you are a bigot if you don’t want it in your vagina”?

I am not holding my breath for any meaningful response to these questions.

MadameMarie · 09/06/2020 17:39

This is kind of my point though. It's become the go-to feminist issue and therefore women stop talking about issues like the pay gap.

It's the ultimate dead cat strategy.

Stressing · 09/06/2020 17:41

@northender

This is awful, and I feel the same. I just saw a man in my feed saying ‘why the fuck do we care what JK says anyway’ and I’m so angry that I don’t feel I can take on the debate because of the comeback. We should all be united and make a concerted effort to support. There must be a few thousand of us on MN. we should get organised, go over to Twitter and make our voices heard together!
PurpleHoodie · 09/06/2020 17:41

Then start some threads/discussions on pay gaps.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/06/2020 17:42

@SirVixofVixHall has reminded me of a question I forgot, @Newdadtogirl - would you be happy if your dd was getting changed in the women’s changing rooms at the swimming pool, and a penis-haver was walking round starkers, not caring how uncomfortable this made the other users of the facilities?

Or if your dd was told that she had to get changed for PE in front of a male-bodied fellow student (who had self-identified as female), or share sleeping and bathroom/shower facilities with them on school trips - and if she would get called a bigot and transphobic who should die in a grease fire, if she was not entirely comfortable with this?

BaronessFloralBunting · 09/06/2020 17:43

Oh right, so you've been reading lots of threads about trans and concluded that anyone who posts on one never talks about anything else? You really need to get your device looked at, there's a whole internet out there with women talking about surrogacy, prostitution, pornography, FGM, rape conviction rates, rape crisis provision, maternity support....

BatShite · 09/06/2020 17:43

I haven't mentioned JK Rowling, I haven't mentioned transmen.
I just said that I agreed with Daniel's statement, I even quoted the bits I liked, I'm not sure where you got JKR and transmen from?

The thread is about Daniels 'reply' to JKR. Thats what triggered the 'statement'

Oddly, Daniel didn't mention transmen either. Even though JKR was talking about transmen, not transwomen. Yet the answer is...transwomen are women. Weird.

BatShite · 09/06/2020 17:44

Infact, JKR wasn't even 'talking about' transmen. But if you took her statement to be about transpeople at all, it would be transmen, not transwomen.

MadameMarie · 09/06/2020 17:44

@Stressing

The elites are deliberately using and spreading divisive nonsense like this, so other issues aren't talked about as much and debated and time is wasted with women more and more riled and divided over such utter stupid identity politics.

It's been deliberately implemented into public discourse to subvert feminism and too many feminists have fell for it. Not least on here.

JellySlice · 09/06/2020 17:46

How the hell can anyone without a uterus have a period?

That's not the issue. The issue is coercing people to say that a person who has a period is anything other than a woman or girl.

And the other issue is that some people, though naïvety or narcissism, already say this and sometimes even believe it.

PurpleHoodie · 09/06/2020 17:47

Other Feminist issues are still being discussed. Perhaps take a gander and read some.

BatShite · 09/06/2020 17:49

This is kind of my point though. It's become the go-to feminist issue and therefore women stop talking about issues like the pay gap.

I do feel its the current biggest threat to womens rights. Hence, a lot of focus on it. These men are trying to remove womens rights, wholesale, in one swoop, NOW. So yeah, focus on it.

Haven't seen anyone told to stop talking about the pay gap though? Though even on that, how can you even discuss the pay gap, if you cannot name the people who recieve less pay? If those who recieve more pay..are included in the lower paid group just because they say so? Its impossible to discuss any feminist topics really, if you cannot define woman.

Fanthorpe · 09/06/2020 17:50

We can only identify and discuss the pay gap if we identify as a sex class. Our sex is the axis of our oppression. By removing that distinction it removes your legal protection.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/06/2020 17:50

So, is the crux of your point that you don't believe in the ability to self-identify as a certain gender? If so, what is your opinion on the medical consensus around transgender individuals?

You can identify as anything you want Willow '- but YOU CAN'T CHANGE YOUR SEX!

Transwomen are MEN. They will always be men. If they feel afraid in men's spaces, then they should be looking at changing the attitudes of violent and transphobic men, rather than be bullying women into letting them into women's safe spaces.

But they don't because they know that they really would end up pasted over the walls (rather than just in their imaginations).

So instead they bully women. They want to be regarded as women - real women - because it validates them and gives them what they want.

Mediocre athlete? Don't worry! You can identify as trans and kick the shit out of the girls!

Women find you repulsive? Don't worry! You can identify as trans and get access to their changing rooms and make them feel really uncomfortable as you swing your dick around in fronton them and their children!

Read their tweets - they take so much pleasure in making women - real, biological women - feel afraid.

BatShite · 09/06/2020 17:51

MRAs really have played a blinder here mind. Very clever.

BaronessFloralBunting · 09/06/2020 17:51

Oh ok. We haven't had a proper feminist to educate us how it should be done for a while. It is one of the more niche criticisms when a feminist tells other feminists that they should be prioritizing every women's issue except the issue they are currently talking about, but it's always interesting to give it a run out.
