JK Rowling threatening legal action

TheLashKingOfScotland · 29/05/2020 16:52

A TRA and Canadian Green Party rep has made libellous comments about JK regarding her position on trans rights and her suitability to be trusted around children.
JK asked her to retract them or they would hear from JK's lawyers. Currently they are digging in. Seemingly unaware that JK has pursued legal cases based on Twitter comments before and that it isn't acceptable to make unfounded statements about people.
It will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
It could have wider reaching consequences if certain sectors see they can't just make unfounded accusations any more.

JKR is today back to posting kids' pictures and commenting on each one, addressing the child by name, and pointing out some feature in the art that she loves.
I didn't think I could love her more, but I do. The vibe coming from her Twitter is so good, clean, healthy, loving. She has not let the vileness and hatred get between her and her mission, which is to let each child know it is loved and has something to offer.
Ordinary people will get this.
How warped must a mind be to throw vitriol at this lovely woman! Few famous authors have time for their readers, much less genuine love for each and every one.

FannyCann · 31/05/2020 09:04

I'm with Floral re "glorious".

Of course I'm appalled at the abuse JKR is now receiving and it's a real shame that her Ickabog hashtag has been targeted so that it isn't a safe place for children without parents' careful supervision.

However, of course this means many, many people who may previously have been unaware of the issues, who had never heard of some of the worst offenders are now seeing the cult for what it is. Now Haddock has joined in with a peak performance (see what I did there) and it may well be that Baroness Nicholson will succeed in her promised plan "I intend to make him rather more unhappy." where the mass of previous complaints to the GMC have failed. Hopefully a letter from JKRs lawyers is on the way too.
The fact is this episode has brought sunlight and the worst elements have exposed themselves to a much wider audience.
It can only be for the good.
And JKR is really one of very few women who have the power to deal with this. Poor Martina has been forced to tread a very careful line in order not to lose work with the BBC and other sports bodies. Other women have been forced off Twitter at least for short periods, think Alison Moyet.
It's time to lance the boil.

Also if you are on Twitter please send some supportive comments on the Ickabog hashtag, it all helps the ratio.

BoreOfWhabylon · 31/05/2020 09:04

I do think there will be a time when it will all come crashing down these people will deny their part in it.

Yes, like the whole Kids Company thing. Remember how the great and the good feted Camilla Batshitwotsit and then couldn't back away fast enough when the wheels fell off that particular gravy train?

nauticant · 31/05/2020 09:09

You've had a hard-on for middle-aged women after one handed you your arse on national telly, champ

There's actually term for this: a "hate boner".

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 31/05/2020 09:11

Viagra for sociopaths.

Jocasta2018 · 31/05/2020 09:15

They do realise that she's rich enough to take them to the cleaners, don't they? Even if they found a solicitor to do pro bono work, she'd still have ample funds for a lengthy legal battle...
Best of luck to JK Rowling - she's a voice of reason when there are so many idiots around.

Aesopfable · 31/05/2020 09:31

Forget sueing them (most are probably living with their parents and only own a computer). The police should knocking on the doors of the UK ones for harassment and malicious communication. We know they have done so for far less on behalf of certain individuals.

Aesopfable · 31/05/2020 09:33

JKR might be better funding a judicial review of the Police/CPS looking at why they are not reacting to harassment and threats of violence towards women.

Dances · 31/05/2020 09:34

Good post FannyCann except please don't encourage people to post on the #TheIckaBob thread. It's a lovely thing.
Leave it to the kids

FannyCann · 31/05/2020 09:38

Lord McAlpine's lawyers pressured every UK twitter retweeter whilst pursuing the main target, Sally Bercow who made the original tweet. Whatever he did I'm sure JKR can do the same. I imagine she has the clout to bring pressure to bear on Twitter so perhaps a few accounts will get suspended.

Needmoresleep · 31/05/2020 09:47

I really admire JKR.

Loads of money, honestly earned, yet she retains her humanity and conducts her private life privately.

My politics and hers dont align completely but I admire her donations to causes she cares about, often centred on vulnerable women.

I really hope she fights this one. She can afford to fight for the right to express reasonable and carefully expressed views without facing abuse and probably libellous allegations. Most women can't. She would be doing it because, aside from the money, she is one of us.

thirdfiddle · 31/05/2020 09:48

She's classy. So few words wasted on the negatives. I guess JKR has had her share of book burning lunacy over the years, they're just another fly to brush off.
And sweet about the drinks with Fionne and friends. I didn't see the interaction that brought that about but would love to be a fly on the wall!

I'm a Twitter novice, and I thought ratio is about lots of likes rather than lot of comments? I "like" left right and centre on GC comments, but I hardly ever post something myself.

Aesopfable · 31/05/2020 09:53

so that it isn't a safe place for children without parents' careful supervision

Nowhere on Twitter is a safe place for children. Any child on twitter needs careful parental supervision. The official age limit is 13.

Lordfrontpaw · 31/05/2020 09:54

It seems like an awful lot of jealousy going on. They keep going on about her money. I just watched a video from the US where some protestors had dumped horse poo/urine on a police car. The people who did this were mostly wee white young adults playing at civil rights hero - a black man was telling them to stop because the police would blame the black community and go after them. They looked like children being ticked off by their mum.

A fair amount of this twitter nonsense is kids playing civil rights hero, enjoying the buzz, being led by the nose by some unsavoury characters.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 31/05/2020 10:04

Also sorry if this makes me awful and sticking my nose in or whatever, but those Corbyn tweets I find fucking hilarious. The way noone could criticize saint corbyn was just ridiculous.

Finding those tweets funny and saying so was the first stage of my falling out with a friend who was very much impressed by Corbyn. The petulant responses from his fans whenever anyone criticized him did not assist him in the way they were hoping!

Kantastic · 31/05/2020 10:05

It's always jealousy with these characters, especially jealousy of women. It's a very common pattern in "cancellation" that the person instigating the attack is attacking a woman much more successful than him/herself. The Amanda Jette Knox furore recently was completely typical - the laydee leading it was very angry that Jette Knox was "taking up too much space" - ie was actually successful and had an audience, unlike said instigator.

JK Rowling, with her level of success and her full-on refusal to bend the knee, must have them absolutely foaming at the mouth.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 31/05/2020 10:08

After the killing of a young man called Oscar Grant by transit police in California sparked protests a few years back antifa attempted to move in on the big one in Oakland, only to be scolded in that exact same tone by his grandfather. They didn't listen, obviously.

Lordfrontpaw · 31/05/2020 10:12

I’m seeing tweets advising people to step away from antifa as they are ‘not friends of black people’. They remind me of the students who would stand outside the student union hawking the Socialist Worker.

BlackberryCane · 31/05/2020 10:33

Yeah he agreed not to pursue the smaller account owners if they made a £25 donation to Children In Need. His health was failing by then so that might have been part of it: even if you have the money not to care, you might feel your remaining time is best spent focusing on the famous ones rather than John1788886544 from Exeter.

But if I were any of the tweet brigade, I'd be shitting my pants because this really is someone with the money to throw at ruining your life if she feels like it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 31/05/2020 10:36

Yep, this is exactly what those of us who're familiar with narcissistic personality disorder from a clinical perspective saw coming

YY, and yes to this being only the start of it.

FannyCann · 31/05/2020 10:47

I'm a Twitter novice, and I thought ratio is about lots of likes rather than lot of comments? I "like" left right and centre on GC comments, but I hardly ever post something myself.

You are right, but I was using the term loosely to put some positive comments on the hashtag to help stop it being derailed by the haters.

Nowhere on Twitter is a safe place for children. Any child on twitter needs careful parental supervision. The official age limit is 13.

This is also true. It's such a shame though, that where JK has commented on a lovely picture and a child and proud parent can see that if they inadvertently scroll down they are likely to see abusive comments posted below so it really needs very close parental supervision that people may not have anticipated.

AnyOldPrion · 31/05/2020 10:48

Can someone please arrange a date between JKR and the Baroness? I would really, really like that to happen.

“In 2005 J.K. Rowling co-founded the Children’s High Level Group (CHLG) with Baroness Emma Nicholson MEP,”

RuffleCrow · 31/05/2020 10:52

It's great to see a woman so rich and successful she can pull out all the stops to make these fuckers stfu. Good for her. I was never a huge fan of her books, but her work ethic, integrity and drive are an inspiration to me as a single mum and two bit hack. Star

Ooh, thanks Any, hopefully the two of them will be having a nice long chat as we type!
