It's all over Twitter that Audible have buckled under the TRA pressure to withdraw their advertising from MN. I can't see anything on this board about it? I joined Audible years and years ago because of an advert and a recommendation from other MN users.

I am incredibly unimpressed if this is the case.

I might be missing something - but I haven't see any confirmation that thy've withdrawn advertising?

IchbineinBerlinner · 17/05/2020 20:45

I see that Glinner has posted about this. I've cancelled my account and explained why. Glinner's thread offers a list 10 cheaper versions of Audible

So it seems that Audible has pulled advertising from Mumsnet, with their social media manager using the misogynistic term 'terfs' on her feed. Here's how you cancel your account audible.co.uk/contactus

I'm annoyed that people are reporting Audible to have withdrawn funding without any proof. Is there anyone not saying "um hang on" let's wait for confirmation before we cancel anymore?

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 21:04

Their employee called people who asked if this was true ‘t**s’ and said that she was seeing their DMs (not threatening at all eh?)

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/05/2020 21:08

Those who use Scribd, how does their content compare to Audible? I've been googling other audiobook suppliers and seeing if they have books that I have already bought from Audible for comparison but some, including Scribd, don't let me look at what they have in stock unless I sign up.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 21:09

They have a free trial! I’m on it now.

BadLady · 17/05/2020 21:10

Even if they haven't pulled advertising from Mumsnet, their PR person has been hugely offensive.

PetraDelphiki · 17/05/2020 21:14

Scribd has a load of what I would call “airport” books - light reading - which is what I listen to on my runs. There’s always something I fancy although their user interface is awful!!! Also books to read not listen to!

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 21:18

I’ve spotted a load that I usually get from Audible - I love a good murder and biography when I’m walking.

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 17/05/2020 21:26

I don’t have an Audible subscription so have signed up for a year of Mumsnet premium instead

MissLawls · 17/05/2020 22:10

Hello. Long time no post. Hope everyone is as well as they can be under the circs.

I'm a huge fan of Audible due to sight reasons and I have anxiety issues which makes listening to books incredibly soothing and comforting. Reminds me of being read to as a child - lucky me!

I will write tomorrow to the CEO and country manager and make my views clear on this. I won't cancel unless we hear for sure they've pulled their ads. I hope they don't. Quite apart from giving in to bullies it would be an incredibly stupid thing to do alienating such a huge market.

I'll let you know how I go.

WelcomeToTheMountaintop · 17/05/2020 22:41

clymene. The pp is right, it depends on what app your library is using. Ours uses of BorrowBox, which I think is pretty common.

You will need your library card and possibly a PIN which will be issued by your library.

I set my daughters up last week, cook about 2 minutes. But as I say, it varies by local authority as to how easy it is.

In normal you can just go to the library with your device and they will do it for you. Ther should be some kind of online help guide though.

Do you know what the app is that they use?

merrymouse · 17/05/2020 23:00

This is very strange.

Audible are Amazon.

Amazon obviously sell a huge range of books and products and audible advertise on a wide range of podcasts.

If they are going to pull advertising from a major website for parents, do they apply the same scrutiny to other advertising channels and their own products?

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 23:20

Oh my!

Audible
RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 17/05/2020 23:24

I don't think they will pull it. They've made the statement in support of trans rights and will probably hope that will do.

Doyoumind · 17/05/2020 23:29

I've had free trials in the past and they have been bombarding me recently about their latest but I definitely won't take them up. I find loads to listen to on BBC sounds and with other podcasts.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 23:29

Then doubled down and called anyone querying it a misogynistic slur (usually coming after ‘kill’ ‘punch’ ‘die’ ‘burn’). And someone with pronouns on their profile knows this extremely well - she can’t say that she doesn’t. And she is supposed to do this for a living?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/05/2020 00:25

I don't think they will pull it. They've made the statement in support of trans rights and will probably hope that will do.

This could have been managed so much better by Audible though. All their companies give control of their social media to these idiotic children who want to push their own agendas.

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 18/05/2020 00:38

Eresh

Twitter is to a certain extent the face of the company, what way are they training their staff?
I saw a tweet about asking if this employee has access to customer information.
Do we have any GDPR experts on here?I can not find anything online about a company's twitter and GDPR.
I keep thinking about Selena Todd needing bodyguards at work.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/05/2020 00:41

I do know a bit about GDPR (IANAL though), she hasn't revealed any personal info AFAIK but it's worrying that she's talking about customers who have contacted her in that way.

Lordfrontpaw · 18/05/2020 08:52

Not sure how much detail she could have from a DM - but with such poor judgement, who is to say she wouldn’t circulate the twitter account names to activists to target/add to a blocker?

I’ll judged, untrustworthy, immature, unprofessional. If I were her manager I would have her on a warning at least for bringing the company into disrepute/lack of trust - and that was always a sacking offence when I managed people.

Pertella · 18/05/2020 08:57

No doubt we will be hearing soon how those nasty terfs hounded this poor brave young girl out of her job because she stood up to their hate and bigotry 😒

Lordfrontpaw · 18/05/2020 08:59

So you can be unprofessional, use sexist slurs and throw a strop - but it’s ok if you are a member of the club? Nah.

MissLawls · 18/05/2020 09:36

All their companies give control of their social media to these idiotic children who want to push their own agendas.

It's a big mistake to think social media can be done by a newish person or an intern or trainee. It's a highly-skilled job and you can tell when it's done well - see Yorkshire Tea for eg when it came under attack.

As someone who works in comms and marketing and has run clients' social media accounts it infuriates me that so many brands think they can just shuffle this off onto someone too young and inexperienced to do a proper job.

If you want to look professional, put a professional face on your brand.

Lordfrontpaw · 18/05/2020 09:40

I suspect they think ‘oh they are young, they understand social media’.

Who is responsible for their reputation management? Wherever I worked it was really senior legal bods who would have a bloody fit. There would be committees comprising people from legal/compliance/HR/PR and someone from the C-suite - and there would be a ‘disaster plan’ in case of such a shooting in the foot.

I can’t believe a large corporation can be so naive.
