It's all over Twitter that Audible have buckled under the TRA pressure to withdraw their advertising from MN. I can't see anything on this board about it? I joined Audible years and years ago because of an advert and a recommendation from other MN users.

I am incredibly unimpressed if this is the case.

I listen to BBC radio plays/books. And any other library recordings. They can (as we say in Glasgow) ‘get tae fuck’.

FleecyMoo · 17/05/2020 15:48

Thanks PermanentTemporary but I honestly can't buy goods and services from a company that believes men can turn into women!! I am currently 'chatting' to a customer service person on Amazon and they have gone away to think about what I've said so I'm waiting to see what they come back with.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 15:49

I can’t buy from companies that support issues that stick in my throat. There are far more companies and products that just don’t.

FleecyMoo · 17/05/2020 15:50

Ha ha, I'm not a Glasweigan but I can second that sentiment! I do listen to BBC iPlayer too but Audible has such brilliant books and they are generally unabridged too.

Still waiting for Amazon to think about what they are going to say to me.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 15:50

Fleecy - let’s hear what they say. My chat was more cut and paste - I’m not 100% certain it was a person (I manage the chat for work and the boys can be rather good).

Collidascope · 17/05/2020 15:54

I'm intrigued to know what they're gonna say too. Part of me thinks they're hoping it's just going to go away if they don't comment on it.

FleecyMoo · 17/05/2020 15:55

Just had their reply and it's not very promising to be honest. They seem to be disassociating themselves from Audible, whom they most definitely own. I shall email Audible now. I don't want the bullies to win!!!!!!!

FleecyMoo · 17/05/2020 16:02

Intrigued by the fact that Amazon considers itself to be building 'Earth's Most Custome-Centric Company' when that clearly excludes women and men who don't believe that being born with a penis and testicles allows you to become a woman whenever you think you have a 'lady brain'. I hate corporate crap being spouted at me.

DidoLamenting · 17/05/2020 16:10

I have tried and failed to switch from Kindle to Kobe as part of my personal commitment to use Amazon only if there is really and absolutely no alternative.

I installed the Kobe app on my phone and a tablet but it completely failed to download a book I purchased. Kobe do audio books as well. You might have better luck than I had.

SomeonesRealName · 17/05/2020 16:17

There are very few decent feminist books on Audible I am really struggling to use up my credits!

FleecyMoo · 17/05/2020 17:11

@DidoLamenting, I've not heard of Kobe but will take a look, thanks :)

@SomeonesRealName, I think Audible will have to remove Douglas Murray's 'The Madness of Crowds' (not that it is a feminist book, mind you) if they are going to stand by their SM manager's chosen stance re women. I have to admit that I don't use Audible for my feminist literature but it is great for soothing 'cosy crime' novels, golden age stuff etc.

Kassia978 · 17/05/2020 17:18

Scribd is a good alternativ to Audible. I’ve been using them for a while because they’re cheaper ($8.99 vs $14.99 — I’m in Canada so pay USD, I don’t know what the GBP pricing is). They’re also don’t use the credit system that Audible has, so you can generally have a number of books going at the same time. Their subscription also provides access to written novels, newspapers and magazines (though I’ll admit I’ve never actually checked those out so I can’t say what the selection is like).

FleecyMoo · 17/05/2020 17:23

@Kassia978, thanks for the info!

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 17:23

How does it work - do you pay per book and are there any free books?

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 17:29

Ok so got a free trial to scribd. But what did I see...?

Audible
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 17/05/2020 17:58

I find it slightly alarming that Audible may well have had DMs from people, possibly linking support for Mumsnet with account details, that are in the hands of this individual.

I really wish companies would vet their staff properly.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 17:59

Another issue to flag when cancelling subscription.

FleecyMoo · 17/05/2020 18:03

I've just emailed Tracey Markham, SVP Country Manage at Audible, London (address [email protected]) to ask if Audible and their parent company, Amazon, will be removing Douglas Murray's work from their platforms and if the official company stance is to call their customers who believe women are adult human females TERFS.

Thanks to ⚢ Woman4Women ⚢ Tiffany Richardson
@Woman4W for the email address on Twitter :)

I can see you're on the same track Lordfrontpaw!

WelcomeToTheMountaintop · 17/05/2020 18:13

I cancelled my audible subscription a while ago. Nothing to do with their advertising stance, just a cost saving excercise.

I found that my local library had loads of free audiobooks to download. So those looking for an alternative, try your library website. It was dead easy to set up too. I also get free e—magazines. And since lockdown, our library services have been adding books like mad.

FleecyMoo · 17/05/2020 18:17

@WelcomeToTheMountaintop, thanks :) I'd not thought about the library as a source of audiobooks. Fingers crossed that they can reopen soon.

Clymene · 17/05/2020 18:56

@WelcomeToTheMountaintop - if you can explain to me how to download books from the library onto an iPad, I would love you forever. I've been trying for ages and I just can't do it

LumpySpacedPrincess · 17/05/2020 18:59

Cancelling with a heavy heart.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 17/05/2020 19:00

Normally you just need to download an app and then login with your library card number and PIN. Google your local council library audio books and you should get instructions eg

www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/residents/libraries/audio-downloads-eBooks-and-eMagazines.aspx

If you don't know your PIN try your year of birth.

Clymene · 17/05/2020 19:04

I will have another look. Ours seems unbelievably complicated but I haven't tried since last summer so maybe they've improved it since.

DidoLamenting · 17/05/2020 19:11

Kobe is owned by Walmart so from the point of view of being ethical might be no better than something owned by Amazon.

There is Google Playbooks as well- which is probably no better but using an Android phone I can't really escape Google.

Scribd and Bookmate are monthly subscriptions only rather than buy an individual item.

I don't listen to audio books so for the moment will try to limit all purchases to real books from either Waterstones, Toppings or Abe (yes I know Abe is owned by Amazon but at least some money will be going to independent sellers)
