It's all over Twitter that Audible have buckled under the TRA pressure to withdraw their advertising from MN. I can't see anything on this board about it? I joined Audible years and years ago because of an advert and a recommendation from other MN users.

I am incredibly unimpressed if this is the case.

twitter.com/MegVClark

This is their social media person. Calling those asking questions re the Mumsnet revenue a bunch of t**fs.

Maybe this is why no one is getting clarification.

BadLady · 17/05/2020 12:34

Wow! Meg sounds professional...

I'm cancelling now.

I think it's more "embarrassing" for a professional social media manager to be publicly slagging off their customers and crapping on about "terfs" like a 17 year old anime avatar gamer.

OvaHere · 17/05/2020 12:41

What's wrong with these people? They have no idea about customer service.

I've never used audible so I can't say I'm bothered but it's pretty embarrassing for audible that they can't respond to enquiries properly.

PermanentTemporary · 17/05/2020 12:59

Oh, Meg Clark's tweets are protected now.

Oh dear.

rogdmum · 17/05/2020 13:03

For those who missed the tweet before it was protected...

Audible
Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 13:11

I’m our them. Will be using a screenshot of this tweet - thanks for taking it. Will be emailing her boss too.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 17/05/2020 13:18

Well, that's clear. And horrifying.

titchy · 17/05/2020 13:26

What on earth is wrong with people asking them to clarify a position meg - that's kinda your job surely....

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 14:08

Locked and blocked I’m guessing.

PermanentTemporary · 17/05/2020 14:10

It's quite distressing when people who are obviously quite normal use 't*rf' in conversational text like that. It wasn't the point of the tweet. Like it's ok to think and talk about women like that.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 14:19

Hmmm pronouns include twitter biog. Huge giveaway. Hope their boss is keeping an eye on this. Seems hard to keep your job as a SM bod when your account is blocked in a huff.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 17/05/2020 14:33

I'd guess Audible won't be best pleased when they get all the angry emails from subscribers about their position on Mumsnet, check their Twitter account and see what their social media representative has been saying. She's not a grown up, let alone a comms professional.

PermanentTemporary · 17/05/2020 14:34

I should think she's been told to protect them for a bit. If she is getting piled on, it might be to protect her, or just to take a breather before deciding what to do on Monday.

AH is such a stirrer - I think fancies himself as an activist. Companies who might just be deciding to change their advertising spend suddenly find themselves in a vortex with outrage on either side whichever way they go. And it's not really about winning or losing but making MN a less desirable brand. They have spent years already doing this.

Awaiting to hear what happens. I've thought about an Audible sub but definitely not if they are so concerned to disassociate themselves from MN, no doubt they wouldnt want my money.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 14:35

Well when cancelling accounts do remember to explain exactly why. Don’t need to name names though (I’m a softy and would never use the tactics of others to try to get people fired). But someone really needs to be re-educated.

Sexnotgender · 17/05/2020 14:38

Why on earth do companies let children run their social media?

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 14:39

And yes, a busting email box to her boss will
definitely cause a serious issue. For a ‘professional’ to make such a bad judgement call shows they don’t have the maturity, professionalism or sense to be doing a customer facing role.

I’ve managed teams in large businesses - the one thing I really hated (and wouldn’t stand for) was when someone cocked up and the first I knew was a call from someone on/a summons from the SMT.

SomeonesRealName · 17/05/2020 14:44

I've got 6 credits to spend before I cancel - need some feminist text recommendations please!

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 14:46

Maybe ask for it back? I’m sure they have broken some part of the contract there - insulting their customers base with misogynistic term which is usually accompanied by words such as ‘kill’ ‘punch’ ‘burn’ etc.

I haven’t quite composed my reasons yet, but I will enjoy it.

Clymene · 17/05/2020 14:48

They let children run the SM because they pay buttons and generally it's a job for graduates. But really, they should get their PR team involved whenever there's a whiff of controversy. They'd look less idiotic them.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 14:50

Nooo it’s much more than that - this type of thing really shows why you don’t give anyone control of the accounts. Just like you wouldn’t get your work experience kid to issue your company press release on the back of the R&As. Way too much damage can be done.

Let’s not forget Gerald Ratner - and he was the boss!

MindTheMinotaur · 17/05/2020 14:51

Having seen the tweets from the social media manager I won't be getting a subscription. Fine to disagree but using a slur like that is unacceptable. The campaign to defund Mumsnet is run by a few activists happy for a large amount of women to lose out on advice, friendship and support because they take issue with one small part of the site.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/05/2020 14:53

What a silly thing to do.

See, if that was me (as my younger self) my mum, granny and sisters would all be lining up to kick my backside. Even my dad would be having serious words. Grandpa would probably say something very fruity about men taking advantage of women.

But that was back when women stood up for women.

FleecyMoo · 17/05/2020 15:36

Oh FFS! Audible is a massive part of my life as I have a chronic physical illness and love to listen to Audible books when I'm bed bound. I feel gutted to think that they are being influenced by this violent group of men and their 'allies'. I have bought hundreds of books from them and am so sad that I now have to cancel my membership.

Since they are owned by Amazon I am equally upset that I can no longer shop with them because it is so useful for me when I can't leave the house to get things delivered. I have spent thousands over the years and it seems perverse that they don't value my custom simply because I am a woman and know what a woman is - clue, not someone with XY chromosomes Angry

I have tried to contact the customer service departments of both Audible and Amazon this afternoon but both are 'unavailable'. I hope a lot of us will contact them, when they are accepting messages again, to register our disappointment. I have boycotted M&S ever since I realised that their lingerie reviews were written mainly by AGPs and haven't noticed any loss to my quality of life so perhaps I shall find decent substitutes for Audible and Amazon too?

Thanks so much WelshMoth for bringing this issue to my notice and thanks too rogdmum for the screen shot from their deluded SM manager before she blocked her account.

PermanentTemporary · 17/05/2020 15:43

Fleecy, I dont think anyone should feel forced to be part of a boycott. AH feels personally attacked and politically outraged by MN and will keep doing this crap. You could argue that staying on Audible but asking them to reconsider over time etc is more productive. I do a lot of boycotting but it's barely ever effective.
