Transphobic attitudes contradict the good feminism does everyday

Why is there such a large portion of the feminist movement so against trans culture. Trans people have been some of the biggest advocates for supporting allegedly oppressed groups. Why is it suddenly okay to for feminists (a formally oppressed group) to oppress trans people (currently oppressed group) why?

I know somebody who fell into a barrel of treacle.

Is he/she like Obelix now, and doesn't ever need to eat sweets again?

TinselAngel · 11/04/2020 14:45

I know somebody who fell into a barrel of treacle.

You can't just drop that here and not tell the full story.

aladyofinderterminateage · 11/04/2020 14:50

It could be outing, but briefly there was an altercation between two individuals in some premises that had legitimate reasons for having barrels of treacle on site.
One individual unfortunately, but possibly not entirely accidentally, ended up in the treacle.
The extraction of said individual was a bit like that child's storybook tale where a line of people all get stuck together.
It takes an awful lot of water to dissolve treacle.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 11/04/2020 14:54

Wow. That molasses flood story is amazing (and awful), too.

FannyCann · 11/04/2020 16:02

Loving the treacle stories.
I know the molasses flood story is awful and a horrible way to go but I can't help laughing too.

And the description of how people tramped the molasses all around the city, leaving a trail of stickyness - a rather good example of why we are all at home social distancing and reading about molasses floods rather than leaving an unseen trail of virus....

”All syrup is treacle, but not all treacle is syrup.”

I guess it depends how the treacle identifies!

@Lamahaha - if transphobia should be an -ist rather than a phobia, does that make us transistors?

Thank you for the chocolate concrete recipe, @Danceswithwarthogs - and thank you to everyone for all the reminders of desserts past.

We used to have chocolate blancmange when I was a child - my mum disliked the vanilla one and the pink one so we only got the chocolate one (not the worst deprivation). I remember my dad making it once, and forgetting to put sugar in it - that was a disappointment.

I would like to have a go at making cornflake tart, but the one I really want to make is gypsy tart - the filling is dark brown sugar and condensed milk mixed together and baked.

FannyCann · 11/04/2020 16:58

All the talk of treacle tarts has reminded me my Grandmother used to make a delicious Norfolk Treacle tart, served with a hefty dollop of Cornish clotted cream (in the days when you could only buy it in Cornwall). It's in Constance Spry cookery book and involves more of a lightly set egg custard with syrup and lemon. The filling is golden syrup, butter, cream, egg and lemon (rind and juice).
No breadcrumbs. I haven't made it in years due to dairy free DH so the breadcrumb traditional is much loved by him but one involving butter and cream is off the menu. I think it is far superior to the traditional which can be rather dry and chewy and very dense depending on the quantity and quality of the breadcrumbs.

TinselAngel · 11/04/2020 17:00

What's gypsy tart?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 11/04/2020 17:14

Gypsy Tart, @TinselAngel.

We went to Buckfast Abbey once, and had lunch in the cafe there. They were serving treacle tart that day, and the filling was at least an inch and a half thick - dh was in heaven!

Kit19 · 11/04/2020 17:21

How dare you!! Gypsy tart is amazing!! Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 11/04/2020 17:43

Ah, so it is what we always called Toffee creme tart. That was the best school pud by far.

I've never seen that before. It doesn't look very nice.

Love the person falling in a barrel of treacle story though.

I'm here with my mum (she's stuck here with me for the whole of lockdown as she lives abroad and can't get home) and she says she remembers a chocolate crunch? Which was apparently like a chocolate biscuity thing and you had it with tinned peaches and chocolate custard. Is the chocolate concrete the same thing, do you think? This is in the south.

Danceswithwarthogs · 11/04/2020 18:34

I don’t know, I was a Yorkshire school dinners child in the 80’s, always choc concrete for us

Danceswithwarthogs · 11/04/2020 18:35

(Chocolate crunch sounds posher)

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/04/2020 18:45

Thanks Dances. What does it taste like? Would you call it "biscuity"? I will try your recipe out soon and see if she recognises it from childhood!

Danceswithwarthogs · 11/04/2020 18:47

I’d say biscuity Grin

Danceswithwarthogs · 11/04/2020 18:48

But also a bit like an over baked brownie

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/04/2020 18:58

She says that it possibly sounds like the same thing, thank you Grin

That seems right.

This thread has cured me of whatever residual envy I once had as a child for those who bought the hot lunch instead of my brought lunch of PBJ on white bread & an apple.

Michelleoftheresistance · 12/04/2020 14:57

if transphobia should be an -ist rather than a phobia

'sexist' does not mean saying no to/displeasing/refusing to unconditionally obey and prioritise a particular sex

'racist' does not mean saying no to/displeasing/refusing to unconditionally obey and prioritise someone of a particular race

ist is no more sensible than phobia. Heretic is what is actually meant.
