Men pushing in in queues and not social distancing.

I know in the scheme of things this is only small but its the bloody entitlement that gets to me.

When the new Coronavirus Bill came in last Thursday two men used the 2 m gap to try to push in front while i was queuing outside Tesco.

Re, social distancing , i try i really try to stay 2m from people at all times on the rare occasions but the amount of men who walk right next to me or towards me KNOWING that i will move.

This afternoon was the final straw Queuing outside Sainsburys observing the 2 m rule i had to wait until the queue moved to where the trolleys were . There was no way i could get to them BEFORE queuing and observe the 2m rule so i had to wait in the queue before i got to them. I leant across to put my pound in the slot and the FOUR men queuing behind me jumped the queue by moving along in front.

Im so fed up with the entitlement Every time its been a man EVERY TIME. Ive not seen this from women at all .

first person to be charged with a breach of The Coronavirus Act 2020 was a woman called Samantha Dobbs

I was reading about this case this morning.

This seems a useful summary of the implications (which may have relevence to the Harry Miller/ Fair Cop hearing)

Spectator 'The curious case of the incorrect coronavirus conviction'
5 April 2020,
"Last Saturday, a 41-year-old woman was arrested for what police described as ‘loitering between platforms’ at Newcastle Central station. By Monday, she had been successfully prosecuted – finding herself with a criminal conviction for breaching the newly enacted Coronavirus Act 2020. Days later, the conviction was dropped after police accepted they had misunderstood the law.

Why does all this matter? Well, clearly it’s important when law enforcement misuses some of the most draconian legislation passed in living memory. But the case tells us something else about the state of our criminal justice system. British justice, like the other parts of our constitution, is designed precisely so that failures like this do not occur." (continues)

But we live in a patriarchy predicated on thousands of years of sex-based oppression

...based on thousands of years of sex based differences.

TheBewildernessisWeetabix · 09/04/2020 21:48

There is a great deal of anecdotal evidence on twitter that the street harassment of women is continuing unabated during the pandemic. Much of it perpetrated by male police officers.

Justhadathought · 09/04/2020 21:51

What I have noticed a couple of times is men in our local Tesco apologising (for no need , they weren't in my way) and stepping back if we were both about to head down the same aisle. I haven't noticed this with women

Yes, I've had this experience too......and it is me doing all of the shopping .....plenty of men quite apologetic like they are getting in the way of a woman in a 'woman's space'. Not all of course........some quite the opposite...

Just for balance, HorseRadishFemish I think you're great.

And I agree. I've seen the snot rocket thing and always been a bit confused. Are the men who do it allergic to tissues?

A approached me within half a metre and made fun of me for wearing a mask.

Guardian,
'Test of resolve': Britons warned to stay at home as temperatures set to hit 26C'

(extract)
"Celebrities including the England rugby head coach, Eddie Jones, the TV presenter Emma Willis and the former boxer David Haye have been deployed as part of a government-sponsored social media campaign.

Men aged 18 to 35, who are among the most likely to be in breach of social distancing guidelines, are understood to be a particular focus of the campaign, which also targets the broader population.

Meanwhile, DIY enthusiasts were urged to take extra care over the Easter weekend to prevent putting “unnecessary” pressure on the NHS amid the coronavirus pandemic.

NHS England said there was normally an increase in hospital admissions during the bank holiday weekend involving DIY-related injuries as the warmer weather approaches. It has teamed up with Amazing Spaces television presenter George Clarke to issue advice for those carrying out home improvements." (continues)

I read this thread when I woke up earlier than the rest of the family today. Then I went to the garden center with my mask on.

Of 16 people on the social distancing line with me, 10 out of the 11 women wore masks, only 1 out of 5 men wore a mask.

That's a massive sex difference in 1. people protecting themselves 2. people showing preventive concern for others.

The current government advice (which is being re-examined all the time) is that those with active coughs and sneezes as well as those directly involved in the care of the infected should be wearing them. They also carry risks including infection if not properly used and a false sense of security.

I don't believe this shows that men are better at following government advice or that women are worse for worrying unnecessarily/wasting masks that could help those that need them. I just don't think wearing or not wearing a mask is indicative at this time.

Finally had to venture into an actual supermarket yesterday and wow it's a mess. Men over 30 in particular just would not make way so other people could pass, and several had their noses buried in their phones and all indications of not even having noticed that there were other people in the shop. It's like patriarchy chicken but with trolleys.

TheChampagneGalop · 14/04/2020 00:17

You really notice the difference between female and male socialization now. Even if the virus is even more dangerous to men, they don't (as a group) want to care and change their behaviour.

insideandout3 · 14/04/2020 01:16

"They also carry risks including infection"

Your concern for women is touching, I'll do my best not to get an infection from my homemade mask while being a wasteful worrywort ninny. #thisiswhymendie

Gronky · 14/04/2020 01:46

Home or professionally made, you're putting an absorbent material over your face so please do be careful when removing it. It's important that it be pulled directly away (as opposed to pulled over the head) without being squeezed and that you wash your hands immediately before and after. I don't believe you're being wasteful, this is a very stressful time for everyone and, if it helps you feel better then I'm not going to criticise your rationale but please do your best to stay safe.

HeIenaDove · 15/04/2020 01:36

How interesting @R0wantrees Id put the ones who pushed in front of me in their early to mid thirties.

Out walking yesterday I noticed a man talking to two women, the two parties standing 2 metres apart on either side of a path by the riverside (they'd evidently met while out on their daily walk). A male jogger approached along the path so I just watched to see what he'd do.

He just jogged straight between them. Made no effort whatsoever to bypass them. I'd diverted my route to avoid the chatting group so was at a safe distance from them all. But most of my walking time's spent moving away at speed from male joggers or dog-walkers who seem determined to walk straight towards me. I don't think they see me tbh because I'm an older female and therefore invisible.
