Rapid onset woke intolerance

There is a funny article by Celia Walden in the Telegraph which describes how CV has temporarily silenced the usual herd of swooning fans who cluster around to breathlessly applaud and retweet every vacuous woke celeb pronouncement.

^In the first of a poignant three-part Instagram video detailing Sam Smith’s “quarantine meltdown” last week, the multi-platinum award-winning singer reassured fans that they were self-isolating and suffering from “a bit of a headache and allergies”.
For those who missed it, last year Smith announced “I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between”, and asked to be referred to with the pronouns “they/them”. not “he/him”. So you might need to bear with me on this next bit…
By part three of Smith’s video, they seemed to have deteriorated quite considerably, and was pictured sitting on the doorstep of their £12 million Hampstead home in floral pyjama bottoms, sobbing into their hands.
Just a month ago, this would have been a masterful post, perfectly choreographed for Smith’s ‘woke’ followers and entirely in keeping with the victimhood culture he has become a figurehead for. When “body issues” were the celebrity sympathy tool du jour, the 27-year-old Brit “bravely” spoke out about “battling” those, and was later hailed “a hero” for coming out either as non-binary or genderqueer (at the time, they weren’t really clear which)^

I used to like him, but IMO he is a complete & utter, attention-seeking twit! Off to Instagram - must check on Harry & Mee'again - hope they are all okay Wink

I've been wondering what impact all this would have on people's willingness to provide a receptive and supportive audience to the amateur dramatics of various irritating people.

Quite so. The narcissism. The egotism. The laughable lack of proportionality. The authoritarian histrionics. It's so tedious and it's game over for the entire paradigm now there is something serious to worry about.....

I can't even muster the energy to get angry with people like that at the moment tbh, my instinctive response is just "don't care, go away".

Their, their...

The conclusion is insightful.

But the coronavirus has shown all that up for the bilge that it is, even robbing the woke brigade of some of their favourite language. Because when people talk of “self-identification” now, it’s not about whimsical notions of whether you’ll be going into work tomorrow as Alex or Alexandra, but whether or not you believe you’re infected with a disease virulent enough to necessitate the erecting of makeshift morgues. And if anyone in hospital today tries to tell one of our heroic health workers that “actually, I identify as pansexual, because more than anything I tend to fall in love with a person’s energy, so these are the pronouns to use…”, I’d love to hear how they get on

Sam Smith is an immature, attention seeking, self absorbed, whiny arsehole. Just like the rest of them.

Allergies and headache? Take some antihistamines and paracetamol like the rest of us peasants then and crack on.

As I said on another thread, C19 doesn't give a shit what your bloody pronouns are.

AwdBovril · 24/03/2020 10:52

I wish the Telegraph did share tokens. It looks like a really good piece. Lol at "their, their" - naughty! Grin

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 10:52

Can you imagine being a HCP and being confronted by someone who expects you to care about their pronouns right now? I'd be tempted to smack them.

(Which is probably one of many reasons why I'd make a terrible HCP.)

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 10:54

I also have allergies right now. I'm taking allergy meds and hoping that if I have to venture out for food before the sneezing stops I won't worry the people around me too much.

Lordfrontpaw · 24/03/2020 10:57

I’d does perfectly demonstrate the mindset of such people.

Weeping in their palatial mansion with everything at their disposal that money can buy - as the elderly can’t even get a pack of loo roll and people are dying, families are locked in together at breaking point and the online sale of baseball bats reaches an all time high.

Can’t see beyond the end their own nose. I don’t think that anything would actually make these people consider anyone else.

AwdBovril · 24/03/2020 10:59

Interesting that there is no absolute certainty why more men die of CV than women. It could be to do with a person's total lung volume.

FetchezLaVache · 24/03/2020 11:01

@BuzzShitbagBobbly that's hilarious! Grin

truthisarevolutionaryact · 24/03/2020 11:34

Glorious article. Well done Celia.
I noticed that the comments under Suzanne Moore's good article on how coronavirus has changed our world were also calling for a re balancing of values. And that's in woke central!

I think there is a growing push back on 'celebrity' in general. My daughter tells me about the backlash every few days of different celebrities and their self-absorbed sharing.

But Sam, the drag-queens complaining about losing income, those complaining about cancellation of cosmetic procedures have really shone sunlight on the subject.

Datun · 24/03/2020 11:44

Apart from anything else, Sam Smith must've set up a camera to film them self crying.

Surely that would give anyone, pause for thought, irrespective of the current crisis.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 11:45

I saw some glossy mag's "this is how the Kardashians etc are self isolating in style" article and was all, this is why people in the French Revolution rolled out the guillotines. I mean, not that I'd want the backlash to go anywhere near that far, but seriously, who the fuck cares about some spoiled arsehole's self absorbed babbling and endless selfies during a global crisis. If this in any way undermines the celebrity industrial complex then good.

TheDogsMother · 24/03/2020 11:46

Well there's one good thing to come out of all of this ! Hopefully we won't have to listen to this type of crap for a while. Meanwhile, back in the real world ....

CheriLittlebottom · 24/03/2020 11:50

this is why people in the French Revolution rolled out the guillotines.

Grin Quite!

Excellent point, Datun. I have also noticed a satisfyingly robust response to what seems to have been meant as a heartwarming sleb joint enterprise to cheer us all up - that video that was going round on Twitter the other day showing lots of slebs singing bits of Imagine all spliced together. I couldn't bring myself to watch it. Just from the stills I couldn't avoid seeing it looked emetic.

Dances · 24/03/2020 12:10

Celia Walden is married to Piers Morgan.

WhereYouLeftIt · 24/03/2020 12:11

Pleased that it's the Telegraph publishing this piece - they also have the self absorbed David/Diana whinging about his/her hair weave flapping further from his scalp without hairdresser attention. It's nice that the Telegraph's readers will have this to counter that piffle.

WhereYouLeftIt · 24/03/2020 12:12

"I saw some glossy mag's "this is how the Kardashians etc are self isolating in style" article and was all, this is why people in the French Revolution rolled out the guillotines."

I've never subjected myself to this Klan, but I can imagine Grin.

Datun · 24/03/2020 12:13

I've just looked up emetic. The second time today I've laughed out loud.
