A few questions for feminists

  1. Why is feminism so small in number? They get plenty of airtime but it isn't catching on. Women know about it so why no support?
  1. Feminists want equality of opportunity and equality of outcome but how can you have both when it's impossible? You want to give women choice, but then want exactly 50% of men and women in each industry. This can only be achieved by forcing women (and men) to do jobs they don't want to or choose to do. Explain?
  1. Why do you think the earnings difference is due to gender when time and time again it has been shown it has nothing or very little to do with it. Why feminists not take into account the 40 or so factors which affect earnings, such as men are more likely to work longer hours, do more overtime, take less holidays, work more dangerous jobs, willing to relocate, willing to commute further, etc etc?

Please discuss.

they tend to eat you head first so your limbs don't inconveniently bend the wrong way and snag on the way down

Not ten minutes ago Facebook showed me a video of vets extracting a whole 6 foot beach towel from a snake.

Datun · 19/03/2020 22:01

The Welsh word for bear is arth 🥰

Is it? Fascinating.

So Arthur means bear-er??

Absolutepowercorrupts · 19/03/2020 22:04

Thank you the Bewilderness
Much appreciated, I might get over my 50+ years of aversion to lemon curd.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 19/03/2020 22:07

Bobbly oof, poor snake. Did it survive? I have trouble trying to get mine to eat things that are proper food, so I can't even imagine what would induce him to eat a towel.

I've got so many wonderful screenshots from this thread. Lemon polenta cake with lemon curd filling might be on the books for this weekend.

LadyQuarantinaPluckington · 19/03/2020 22:10

I remember seeing a monster movie with a giant snake that ate people slowly. One of the bad guys started to get eaten feet first, and had a gun with one bullet. The protagonist was trying to get away, and the bad guy had the choice to either kill himself, or try and shoot the protagonist. He chose to shoot the other guy and missed, and was then left to get consumed alive by the snake.

Never been so freaked out by a movie before.

Swift and angry bear attack for me please.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 19/03/2020 22:20

oof, poor snake. Did it survive?

I don't know but the vets were very happy so I hope so?

OhamIreally · 19/03/2020 22:25

Delighted to see this thread and thank you @ClaraMumsnet for leaving it up.

My questions:
Do you write each post afresh or do you copy and paste?
Do you have a folio of past posts that you flick through to decide on which to post on the day?
Where have you been recently- we have missed you.
Why are you posting so early?
Why are you moving camp beds into Number 10?

Discuss.

Why is feminism so small in number

I think you'll find that most women are actually 'feminists' - in the sense that they are women, and come at life from a female view-point. Even if some reject the label.

Been watching some documentaries over the last few days of confinement ( first all-woman round the world yacht crew, and the 1970 Miss World Pageant...) and even though many/most of the women, at the time of the particular events, would not have described them selves as such - later they most definitely did, on reflection.

The descriptor 'Feminist' still seems to have an unsavoury reputation, and many women still want to "be nice", and to placate - as their first instinct. They don't want to be seen as a "angry man hater".......

Equality of opportunity, and equality value is not the exact same thing as equality of outcome.....In fact, once equal civil rights have been achieved, then it is clear that differences and individualities come more into focus.

Women are not exactly the same as men. And not all individuals are the same, regardless of sex.

Justhadathought · 19/03/2020 22:35

Why are women not supporting this ideology, which is supposedly for the betterment of women

If feminism is about valuing the voice of women, and of their particular lived experiences - which I'd personally say it is - than I think the vast majority of women are, and must be, feminists. It is the label and the accrued associations which are the problem, not the actual voice.

Justhadathought · 19/03/2020 22:38

We've banned them now but if you're bored and want to just chat in this thread, shall we leave it up then

TBH Clara, that is a more than a little patronising. I think people can decide what they use as a stimulus for further thought and discussion without diktats from on high.

ClaraMumsnet · 19/03/2020 22:43

Sorry @Justhadathought - not intentional! I was referencing the post from BeetrootRocks which said, "@mnhq leave it it's funny and we're all bored".

Yallreadyforthis · 19/03/2020 22:54

Not ten minutes ago Facebook showed me a video of vets extracting a whole 6 foot beach towel from a snake

Was there somebody on the towel when it went in? I wonder if they're still in there?

LadyQuarantinaPluckington · 19/03/2020 22:55

Aw, let's not eat Clara. It's not often the mods get the balance spot on and ban the wanker but still let us have fun. And I'm Ms. Grouchy McGrouch with the general moderation usually, so this is an unusual statement for me to make...

Justhadathought · 19/03/2020 22:57

@ConservativeV8
I appreciate that you are maybe trying to be supportive...but the inconsistency of approach from mumsnet can lead to some quite bewildering outcomes......

So many posts have been deleted on this forum - based entirely upon reporting ( often targeted and malicious) - rather than through active moderation...that few seem to feel any confidence, at al, in the impartiality of the 'authorities'.

Justhadathought · 19/03/2020 22:58

Sorry that was not addressed to conservativeV*, rather than to general discussion and the moderation team.

Personally , have no desire to "eat" anybody. I'm a vegetarian and have been for 40 years.

Justhadathought · 19/03/2020 23:01

Aw, let's not eat Clara. It's not often the mods get the balance spot on and ban the wanker but still let us have fun

Not sure that the use of the word 'wanker' is appropriate to be honest ( doesn't help matters to state it, even if that is one's feeling).......

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 19/03/2020 23:16

I was reading edited highlights of this thread to my parents over supper. DF, 91, said "Surely everyone agrees with the principles of feminism these days?"

I love him for many things. One of them is raising me to be a feminist. DM was more conventional in her aspirations for me.

He's wrong about the universal acceptance of feminism though. Not while there are people like our unlovely visitor.

LadyQuarantinaPluckington · 19/03/2020 23:17

Justa, please read the thread. Silly recipes and banter now.

Did you really just tell me off for calling an MRA a wanker?😁

NotTerfNorCis · 19/03/2020 23:19

Don't have time to read the whole thread, but .. does anyone remember the 'midnight misogynist'?

LadyQuarantinaPluckington · 19/03/2020 23:22

NotTerf, you probably do want to read the whole thread then 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

ErrolTheDragon · 19/03/2020 23:29

Not sure that the use of the word 'wanker' is appropriate to be honest

Not even on one of the MMs threads? The primary definition in an online dictionary I use is:
a very stupidid^ or unpleasantnt^* personon^, usually a man

I wouldn't say the MM is 'unpleasant', but the rest seems apt enough.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/03/2020 23:30

I seem to have c&p'd links by accident in that.

TheBewildernessisWeetabix · 19/03/2020 23:32

Perhaps wankxer would be better?

Fieldofgreycorn · 19/03/2020 23:33

Can you please remove the no troll hunting rule for a bit? Desperate times call for desperate entertainment. Just until we’re allowed out again?

LadyQuarantinaPluckington · 19/03/2020 23:34

Errol, I don't think I've seen formatting quite so askewGrin
