Suzanne Moore - naming and shaming

Suzanne Moore is naming and shaming her Guardian colleagues/friends who signed the letter condemning her column. She’s obviously feeling completely betrayed but I’m worried this is going to backfire for her. Tell you what - massive balls though.

Katharine Viner's response has been disappointing too. I completely agree with Murray that she should have told all those nasty little cowards to fuck off and find jobs elsewhere. I wonder how many editors would want to employ journalists who had betrayed a colleague like that?

I have to admit I've been more than disappointed in the Guardian since Viner became editor.

I think it's a huge bridge burning strategy and I don't think she should have done it. She may be forcing Kath Viner's hand, or does she want to be sacked? Also I haven't seen the actual petition - the wording may not be personal.

But I'm not enough of a morally strong person not to read the names... and I'm not at all surprised about Eva Wiseman. I think she can write but she has really boxed herself into Polly Filla 'this thing really made me think that thing' columns and it appears to have limited her critical faculties generally.

In the olden days, if people at work ganged up on one person and made life difficult and frightening for that person, it was called bullying and could be a dismissible offence. How things change!

I miss the olden days (say, 2017)

It's compelling. She's burning her bridges with the Guardian, sure and I won't pretend I don't feel anxious for her. But there are other newspapers and, in any case, she's 61 and, although I have no insight into her finances, she may be old enough not to care.

And yet they still manage to justify Suzanne's treatment by making it about sexual harassment. What the fuck is wrong with these fools?

I'm really troubled at the disappearance of older women's voices in the media. Where are the female equivalents of octogenarians whose views are deemed important and who hold prime slots in broadcasting and print journalism? It gives me the shivers when I see those silly young handmaidens siding with LOJ in ganging up on older women, do they not realise they'll be in the bin in their 50s too?

Just saw the letter, what a load of nonentities, what on earth do they have to do with editorial content? Fucking tossers.

According to Suzanne's own comment on her Facebook status, about half of them are journalists.

I know some people worry she has burnt her bridges. But I think she knows what she's doing. She probably can't stomach the thought of writing for the Guardian any longer. Wouldn't surprise me if one of the paper's competitors had offered her a job - don't forget she wrote for the Mail on Sunday for years.

If I was editor of the Guardian, I'd rather keep Suzanne on staff and lose the nasty little shits who signed the letter. This was Viner's chance to show what she's made of, and she's blown it.

I think she's doing a great job and I can't see how she'd struggle to find writing work.

Bloody hell - yes a fuck ton of woke non entities but some ppl I’m very disappointed to see on that list who should damn well know better!

One of them is a commissioning editor for science Shock

Love how Owen Jones has his name at the end.

I think they disappeared when Michele Hanson died @pachyderm

No Hadley, no Marina, no John Crace, no Jonathan Freeland. The journalists on that list should go find new jobs for campaigning groups because they aren't bloody journalists.

Also, amazing how quiet all of the names are on Twitter just now. LOJ is wanging on about Coronavirus as though he is a proper journalist, but the rest are all very quiet.

I seem to be doing a lot of Shock faces today but the end of that letter!
We look forward to working with Guardian leadership to address these pressing concerns, and request a response by 11 March.

Request a response? Please, please tell me they had one and that it ended in 'off'.

The only columnists on the list, as far as I can see, are Owen Jones (obviously), Eva Wiseman and Coco Khan, who does a small column in the Saturday weekend section. So no Polly Toynbee, no Aditya Chakrabortty, no Simon Jenkins, no Rafael Behr, no Nick Cohen - not even Zoe Williams, interestingly. There are a few people who are relatively senior in other ways, e.g. the editor of the Long Reads, the editor of the Guardian Weekend section, some of the people who commission on the arts and culture pages.

Personally I think Marina Hyde is worth 100 Eva Wisemans, and quite frankly you could lose all the journalists on the list of signatories without losing very much from the paper.

There is a grand, bridge burning flair to this. As many PP have said, it does look like an exit from the Guardian, but there will be other opportunities on proper newspapers. What a dismal band of craven, pandering zealots. And one of them is the Science editor? No doubt that position on Guardian Towers requires a sociology degree.....

Floisme · 19/03/2020 13:21

i saw a few commissioning editors who have a lot of power I would think.

Who can blame her if she just can't stomach working there anymore? It's pure class that she is naming Team Hunt the Heretic. Bet they didn't expect to be exposed like that...

I cancelled my digital sub over the whole cis nonsense, as did my husband. If Suzanne is asked to leave and if Kath V gives an inch to these fascists I'm done after 25 years of devoted reading. If she emphasises the importance of freedom of speech ill consider start paying again. And will definitely pay if she gives LOJ his P45. How someone who has proven himself to have zero political judgement is still being published is beyond me.

Interestingly no Ellie Mae O’Hagan (sp?). Besties with LOJ and wished TW (and only TW) a happy IWD.

I love how Owen Jones has his name last, presumably visualizing it as a grand concluding flourish, when actually it's probably the most expected anti climax ever.

Not the first time that's happened to him, I'll bet.
