Oh Stand Gin you have my admiration for not throwing anything. Did you get some support?

Justhadathought · 09/03/2020 19:47

My IWD celebration at work today involved watching a video in which a trans woman explained how hard it is being a woman. I may have said career limiting things

And what was it they found "hard", I wonder?

StandUpStraight · 09/03/2020 19:58

gibbons I did get support, thankfully, and had a couple of interesting conversations with other women who didn’t feel that the trans woman had much to tell them about their own issues, for example, how having children has held them back at work. I am not 100% sure that everyone there agreed with me but I am fairly certain my manager has my back. How ridiculous to be afraid to express a desire to have IWD be about women...but I was afraid. And I still am a little bit.

StandUpStraight · 09/03/2020 20:02

just, would you believe, among other things, being subjected to mansplaining.

Winesalot · 09/03/2020 20:02

Well, while you can not deny that they will probably have had a rough journey to be transwo men, I’d be surprised if much resonated with other women. They certainly can really only speak for the incredibly small population that they represent.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 09/03/2020 20:03

Excellent Stand I hope you can keep having the conversation. It’s ridiculous how scary it is I hope it doesn’t cause you problems.

Truly, the condition of Gender Dysphoria, whereby an individual feels their body is the wrong sex, is really the only specific thing I can feel pity for in relation to TW. And it's not a thing which gives them any notion of the struggles of women, because of all the struggles women have, an unwanted cock and balls isn't one of them.

Not one attached to them, anyway.

DariaWalker · 09/03/2020 20:18

"the condition of Gender Dysphoria, whereby an individual feels their body is the wrong sex, is really the only specific thing I can feel pity for in relation to TW."

I feel no pity at all for such men. If they worked with therapists to get their autogynephilia under control perhaps their experience would be very different.

All my sympathy is exclusively reserved for the women and children who are damaged by such men; as is testified by the Trans Widows threads here in Mumsnet.

FloralBunting · 09/03/2020 20:25

Oh, don't get me wrong, it's a fairly contemptuous 'what a sadsack' kind of pity.

And let's be real here, I was just setting up a knob joke.

StandUpStraight · 09/03/2020 20:30

floral 🙂 I am with you. This particular person certainly seemed to have had a rough time and had gone through a lot to get where they were. I’m totally respectful of that, but we cannot change sex and performing womanhood does not make you a spokesperson for women, ever, and certainly not on IWD.

Winesalot · 09/03/2020 20:39

Certainly not appropriate for IWD or any day that centres women.

FloralBunting · 09/03/2020 20:53

It's really quite the thing du jour, though, and I suspect we'll see more of it before this madness is over. I mean, it's always been the collective male response to women's issues to insert themselves into the centre stage, but there was a growing awareness of the tactic. Now it looks very much like they have a fresh avenue to do it and actually get plaudits for it, as long as the male in question has attempted a smoky eye and a head-down-glance-up pose and calls themselves something twee.

Winesalot · 09/03/2020 21:06

I find the dreamy eyes to the far off right very common on their profile shots.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 10/03/2020 08:09

I read Ellie's tweet as a joke and the exact opposite of this thread - seeing as this thread OP started off with "Happy IWD to women only!" and into a spiel about men, did the same but boot on other foot.
Kind of in a "see, feels crap don't it" when it's about you?" way.
If so going by some of the replies on here had the desired effect.

FloralBunting · 10/03/2020 08:12

Yes, we understood that ellies tweet was meant to make women feel crap. Thanks for pointing that out, though.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 10/03/2020 08:19

Well, there was one questioning as in "that's a joke, surely?" and another "I don't think it is a joke" so not everyone was as sure as you, Floral.
You're welcome though

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 10/03/2020 08:22

Pressed too soon - wasn't this whole thread right from the OP set up to make trans women "feel like crap" though?
Definitely don't think the tweet is right, it's horrible but you get back what you put out there and she just did exactly what was done here by the looks of it.

FloralBunting · 10/03/2020 08:24

Once again, the point of a statement flies way your head. Yes, the tweet was intended to make women feel unpleasant. On IWD. I'm not sure why you think this is some sort of revelation, or something to support. We get it. TRAs don't like women. Have a gold star for working that one out.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 10/03/2020 08:34

You say people who campaign for trans rights don't like women kind of like they're one big blob instead of individual people.
Maybe some don't.
Maybe just like you say you feel here, they're fed up of being treated as lesser, like this OP started out right from the start - and you say "was intended to make women feel like crap" but at the risk of sounding 5 years old this thread started it doing exactly the same and that's what seems to be going over your head.
(Even though I agree it was a shitty tweet)

FloralBunting · 10/03/2020 08:36

Sorry, bored now. Can't be arsed to waste more time with you. Have a nice day.

"What's the history of IWD?
International Women's Day (IWD) has been observed since the early 1900's - a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

1908
Great unrest and critical debate was occurring amongst women. Women's oppression and inequality was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Then in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.

1909
In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day (NWD) was observed across the United States on 28 February. Women continued to celebrate NWD on the last Sunday of February until 1913.

1910
In 1910 a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. A woman named Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) tabled the idea of an International Women's Day. She proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day - a Women's Day - to press for their demands. The conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties, working women's clubs - and including the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament - greeted Zetkin's suggestion with unanimous approval and thus International Women's Day was the result.

1911
Following the decision agreed at Copenhagen in 1911, International Women's Day was honoured the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March. More than one million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination. However less than a week later on 25 March, the tragic 'Triangle Fire' in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working women, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This disastrous event drew significant attention to working conditions and labour legislation in the United States that became a focus of subsequent International Women's Day events. 1911 also saw women's Bread and Roses' campaign.

1913-1914
On the eve of World War I campaigning for peace, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. In 1913 following discussions, International Women's Day was transferred to 8 March and this day has remained the global date for International Women's Day ever since. In 1914 further women across Europe held rallies to campaign against the war and to express women's solidarity. For example, in London in the United Kingdom there was a march from Bow to Trafalgar Square in support of women's suffrage on 8 March 1914. Sylvia Pankhurst was arrested in front of Charing Cross station on her way to speak in Trafalgar Square.

1917
On the last Sunday of February, Russian women began a strike for "bread and peace" in response to the death of over 2 million Russian soldiers in World War 1. Opposed by political leaders, the women continued to strike until four days later the Czar was forced to abdicate and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. The date the women's strike commenced was Sunday 23 February on the Julian calendar then in use in Russia. This day on the Gregorian calendar in use elsewhere was 8 March.

1975
International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time by the United Nations in 1975. "

LynnSchmob · 10/03/2020 08:39

The worst think that women can do on IWD is make a penis owner feel bad about themselves 🤦‍♀️

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 10/03/2020 08:40

Sorry bored now
FFS lol.
And they say discussion or other viewpoints are welcome on this board. Oookay
I was literally only replying to someone saying they didn't think it was a joke and putting my take on it across.
Not the "right" Borg answer though by the looks of it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/03/2020 08:40
