Well, not branded as story hour, but the drag queen is reading a story to primary school children... Brought in by an MP (Mhairi Black)

“Thank you to Flow and @MhairiBlack for sharing their experiences with us today. It was really important to hear about Section 28 and the negative effect it had. Thankfully now we teach #LGBTEducation proudly at @Glencoats_PS #LGBTQProud @LGBTYS @LGBTHistoryScot

MB seems to have some real issues (possibly stemming from being bullied herself for her lesbianism?). Seems to me that she would benefit from some counselling or self reflection. She is projecting — full of anger. It’s not healthy.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 24/02/2020 21:45

If it's anything like our school, kids sign a checklist of photo permissions at the start of term, which specifies various situations, like 'local press', 'social media', etc.

I would have thought context mattered though - maybe if you realise you can't actually use the full name of the 'flowjobqueen' you're inviting in then might be prudent to let them know not to post photos on their social media along with all the nsfw shots?

This is the job of school head and teachers, for goodness sake, safeguarding is one of their most important jobs.

HaindmaidsWail · 24/02/2020 21:49

I think parents could argue in this case that the context is hugely problematic @Scrimshaw

I‘m not a fan of the current cultural Zeitgeist in Scotland whereby calling people cunts, swearing lots, talking about some pretty vile stuff (like threatening to punch Tories) in grammatically incorrect gobbledygook and then claiming it’s just ‘authentic Scottish bantz‘ seems to be regarded as hilarious.

This is what happens when you mock people for being prudes. Seems prudish is one of the worst things you can be, these days.

nauticant · 24/02/2020 21:52

Not many comments on The Times piece. If the deletion of my innocuous comment is anything to go by, the mods there have decided not to let much through at all. How strangely coy.

OvaHere · 24/02/2020 21:55

OvaHere
When I've been involved in charter marks (in schools and local authorities) if senior leaders rate it and the publicity is good then there's a pressure to move up the grades. Presumably if you can get your local MP popping in with their friends plus publicity, that must a nice bit of attention for a pressurised headteacher?
As for cost I have no idea whether the school pays or not.

Thanks for the explanation.

CallofDoodee · 24/02/2020 22:04

I can't believe the picture is still up on the Instagram page! The headteacher's 'thanks for coming' comment has been removed now though...

Hopefully she is in deep shit right now - not because I want someone to be in deep shit, and god knows being a HT is a fucking hard job, but because it would mean that at least this wasn't going unchecked and lessons might be learnt somewhere.

Goosefoot · 24/02/2020 22:05

I know a Gp friend who had discussed commissioning some LGBT input into local schools to try to support high recorded numbers of Gp visits around anxiety linked to sexual and gender identity.

Gee, I wonder why they might feel anxious about that?

TorkTorkBam · 24/02/2020 22:08

The Times article says the children asked to have a drag performer visit as part of lgbt week.

Now I know a lot of infant school children. I don't know any that would ask for such an adult thing on an adult topic.

I'm thinking vegan cat.

OvaHere · 24/02/2020 22:10

The Times article says the children asked to have a drag performer visit as part of lgbt week.

Maybe they've all been watching Drag Race during indoor playtime!Hmm

I swear quite a lot but somehow manage not to threaten to punch people whose politics I disagree with or use misogynistic slurs. Amazingly enough it can be done!

What seems to be going on is that some people have decided that since they're Woke, and everyone else is Boring, that means they're allowed to do whatever the fuck they want to the Boring people, who deserve whatever they get for refusing to comply with the Woke program. Which is not how a society is meant to work.

It's the thoughtless self obsession and arrogance of adolescence combined with a social zeitgeist that supports using the above as a weapon against anyone deemed not part of the ingroup, imo. People in their 20s should have outgrown that sort of behavior, people in their 30s even more so, but apparently arrested emotional development is very hip at the moment.

DidoLamenting · 24/02/2020 22:20

Here is Flow encouraging some to punch a female Tory supporter in the face.

So much for tolerance and inclusion.

Owen and chums always invoke the homophobia of the 80s etc as a a way of shutting down discussion. Well do they remember what else happened during that time? Oh yes, children were sexually abused left right and fucking centre because of shitty safeguarding and no one wanting to upset anyone. So if you want to bang on about history etc, have a think about that too.

YY. The likes of Savile given carte blanche.

fascinated · 24/02/2020 22:24

I do swear myself but I was brought up by quite prim and proper family (lovely women and men who I respect and love greatly) who were v keen on not swearing, so somehow I still can’t help feeling a bit guilty about it and wouldn’t dream of swearing in public discourse, or to a stranger etc.. We are all affected by our upbringing, it appears!

Thanks for your thoughts. I really struggle with this at the mo. I feel alienated in my own country.

I've never bought into the "proud to be Scottish" syndrome- I don't really see what the accident of where one of my parents and where I was born justified being proud, but the current Scottish zeitgeist is definitely something to be ashamed of.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/02/2020 22:26

I'm just old enough to remember the 70s, and plenty old enough to remember the 80s. It wasn't as homophobic as Owen wants to pretend it was. It was, otoh, absolutely swimming in normalization of adult men sexually preying on children, which apparently some people missed so much that they decided it was time to bring it back.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/02/2020 22:27

I'm an overseas Scot and definitely getting that "WTF is going on?" feeling reading some of the news from home. At first I was baffled by my dad's hostility to Sturgeon, now I'm starting to understand.

poshme · 24/02/2020 22:28

Prick news has comment

SNP MP Mhairi Black masterfully shuts down critics of primary school’s drag queen story time

fascinated · 24/02/2020 22:29

Woke v Boring. Yeah. It’s like a bunch of drunk idiots on a night out, fgs. Anything goes.

fascinated · 24/02/2020 22:30

Perhaps it is all a plant to sabotage Indy.... Salmond, Mackay, this...? What the heck is going on?

Same as the infiltration of Labour to make them unelectable.

McPeaked · 24/02/2020 22:30

It’s a small world. Do you remember the incident in Glasgow in January where a young woman was chucked out of a gay club, on her own, at 2am, for wearing a LGB Alliance t-shirt? Looks like Flow was involved in that too.

Imnobody4 · 24/02/2020 22:36

I think what was said about Aimee Challenor i.e. not only did they not understand safeguarding they were not capable of understanding it, applies to Mhairi Black too. It is a dismal performance from a politician in a democracy.

DidoLamenting · 24/02/2020 22:37

I'm just old enough to remember the 70s, and plenty old enough to remember the 80s. It wasn't as homophobic as Owen wants to pretend it was

I was at university 1977- 1981. There was a university Gay Soc. Tom Robinson was singing "Sing if you're glad to be gay". There were pubs known to be gay pubs.

ArcheryAnnie · 24/02/2020 22:40

Fucking hell. So Mhairi Black, the head teacher, and "Flowjob" don't understand safeguarding, and Mhairi tries to paint anyone who objects to this as a homophobe.

Meanwhile "Flowjob" posts photos of identifiable kids (location AND SCHOOL as well as faces) on an adult-themed instagram, and then is revealed to be someone who would have been happy to kick a lesbian out of a bar for wearing the t-shirt of an LGB organisation.

Bonus points for Mhairi going off on a tweeter referring to her as "hen", calling it "misogynist", when "Flowjob" calls people "hen" left, right and centre.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/02/2020 22:40

It was trendy to be bisexual by the time I got to uni. My cousin came out in about 86 or 87. Not perfect, but not the homophobic hellscape some would like you to think either.
