www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/jameela-jamil-comes-out-queer-amid-criticism-her-role-hbo-n1131141

“Actress Jameela Jamil formally came out as queer Wednesday in response to critics who attacked her role in a new HBO Max competition series, claiming her judging a voguing show wouldn't be representative of the black LGBTQ community in which voguing originated.”

And it seems the community are doubting her motivations, with IW questioning if she is in fact queer as she has a boyfriend (linked below), who then comes under fire themselves for bisexual, pansexual, etc. ‘erasure’.

I had to look up ‘queer’ to understand how Jameela was applying that label, so looked up PinkNews. Not terribly helpful but in essence “queer has become a useful umbrella term for some sexual and gender minorities who do not fit into the traditional categories around gender identity and sexual orientation.”
From Twitter I read it as “It’s usually an umbrella term for LGBT+ when someone doesn't want to disclose their sexuality/can't identify with a singular label but knows they aren't straight.”

Here you go, Twitter falls for it. SHE’S GOT A BOYFRIEND. You don’t think it’s odd she comes out as “queer” after being criticised for possibly taking a gay person’s place on a show? #Mugs #Coincidence #Gayface

I was also interested to learn the origin of vogue “Many felt that despite Jamil's comments, her place as a judge was inappropriate as voguing has its roots in the LGBTQ community. The dance style was part of drag competitions popularized by queer people of color and became ingrained in the community's culture.”

I am saddened that Jameela as a woman of colour has to take a third label to qualify for being a judge, and it seems a turf war could be breaking out.
Could this be the start of the backlash within the LGBTQI+ as the umbrella is now so vast, virtually all of us stand under it?

I think "identifying" as a sexuality is dangerous territory.

Much like we see with self identified gender identity. Men are claiming the rights that women - the less privileged class have won; now straight women are declaring themselves pan/bi/queer and piggy backing onto the lgb rights movement.

If you do not actively engage in homosexuality acts, you are not gay and do not face the same discrimination as a gay person. Therefore gay rights are not for you. Obviously it is slightly different for bi people in long term straight relationships, as we can see with such as Jessi Jay, she is still judged for being bi because of previous lesbian relationships even though she is now with a man.

But please don't discriminate against me, I have lesbian fantasies and snogged a girl in my teens.

Binterested · 08/02/2020 09:45

And we’re back to Philip Schofield - a wealthy white man, married with children, who is tremendously brave and stunning. You now get all the good stuff that Stonewall can offer you. All the awards (including some that were intended for women)

Like our own dear Philip Bunce. (Note to self - don’t marry a Philip).

Binterested · 08/02/2020 09:48

By the way I’m not a purist about this. Be whoever you want to be. But we need to tackle this diversity industry around men. It’s the Freemasons for metrosexuals.

Catsfriend · 08/02/2020 09:52

Like so many others, I appreciated the fact that Jameela put body positivity on the agenda. The Muscato thing was my tipping point. In an effort to please everyone, she’s just all over the place.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 08/02/2020 10:36

as we can see with such as Jessi Jay, she is still judged for being bi because of previous lesbian relationships even though she is now with a man.

Jessie J was criticised for saying her bisexuality was just a phase and she wasn’t bi anymore, when her career started taking off in America.

If you do not actively engage in homosexuality acts, you are not gay and do not face the same discrimination as a gay person. Therefore gay rights are not for you.

So the only reason to have a term like gay or lesbian is to claim discrimination?

Pulpfiction1 · 08/02/2020 20:44

So the only reason to have a term like gay or lesbian is to claim discrimination?

That does appear to be the reason JJ is labeling herself as such. Hence the comment.

This has been doing the rounds on social media today: an Instagram story showing Jameela Jamil as a compulsive liar Shock

What is it about? I’m not on Instagram and it’s asking me to log in to see it

Lies and conflicting stories she's told over the years.

She was a model, she wasn't a model;
She was a professional model scout, she was an unpaid intern
She seriously injured herself in a fall during a tv show (broken nose, elbow and tooth), except she's shown continuing on without those injuries,
She got chased by a bee and then got hit by a car turns into she got chased by a swarm of bees on the set of The Good Place and only slightly hit by a car;
She broke her coccyx slipping on ice, actually she pulled a muscle in her bum on the set of The Good Place
She's got loads of allergies, including to peanuts, she posts a photo of a bag of peanuts she's about to eat

It's batshit.

She also features in this video where she says she had had cancer twice and was deaf, among other things. It's all really bizarre.

Wow. What an unlucky person she is. Imagine suffering from so many different conditions and still having a hugely successful career.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but she's actually an executive producer of the show that caused the controversy and isn't just appearing on it.

karencantobe · 09/02/2020 17:41

Surely most people call themselves gay or lesbian to meet partners and like minded friends. Not to claim discrimination as ridiculously alleged.
But if no one knows you are gay or lesbian, you can't be discriminated against on that basis. I am married to a man with 2 teenagers. If I suddenly decided tomorrow that I was a lesbian but did not tell anyone, nobody could discriminate against me on that basis.

Doyoumind · 09/02/2020 17:58

I think she's a serial exaggerator. There is probably an element of truth behind what she says. She had a cancer scare but didn't have cancer. I also read she said she put on 75lbs when she worked at Radio 1 because of steroids for asthma. I've found a couple of pictures from the time where she looks like she weighed more than she does now but definitely not that much more. She's also been in an affair with a married man, been date raped, had an abortion. All of this may be true but she seems to have a story to suit any issue so that makes me wonder.

karencantobe · 09/02/2020 18:06

A third of women have had an abortion and the majority have probably been "date raped". So totally believable just on the laws of average.

Binterested · 09/02/2020 18:09

I had a very good friend at uni who had a similarly dramatic life. Everything happened to her. Assault. Kidney failure, affair with tutor, rape, eating disorder, two cancer scares, on transplant list, stay in a mental health unit. I only knew her for two years but during that time we were always on red alert. The year we left university she got married to someone we’d never met and left six months later having been battered. Then she got meningitis and that was the point at which I realised not all was at it seemed.

She’s now quite well known in her field (related to wellbeing) and successful. I cut all contact decades ago.

Binterested · 09/02/2020 18:14

Afterwards I found out we had also been used as characters in the drama. We apparently dropped her after the rape because we were traumatised by visiting her in hospital and seeing her terrible injuries.

Looking back I feel sorry for the open hearted 18 year old I was then. But a good lesson to learn. People from any walk of life can be very fucked up - successful, clever, attractive. She was all of that. And a fantasist.

Doyoumind · 09/02/2020 18:14

Where is the statistic to say the majority of women have been date raped?

It's all plausible but given that she has verifiably embellished certain truths it makes it challenging to separate fact from fiction.

karencantobe · 09/02/2020 18:15

Cancer scares can range from - I got referred to the hospital and had a biopsy, to - I thought the fatty lump in my arm was cancer and made an emergency appointment to see my GP. It can just be the person themself overreacting to ordinary lumps and bumps.

karencantobe · 09/02/2020 18:18

20% of women have said they have been sexually assaulted. I think this is an underestimate. Most women I speak to say they have been date raped, although they don't always call it rape or sexual assault. They might say - I didn't want to, but he forced himself on me anyway. It is very common.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/02/2020 18:20

I was at schools with girls like that. I suppose we all were.

They had much older boyfriends,
were engaged (but the ring never showed up),
were going to XYZ for the holidays,
were adopted and their real mum was a famous actress,
was repeating the 5th year because they were so far advanced it just wasn’t fair in the rest of the year,
had been scouted for a band/model agency/part in a film (gosh darn it fell through because Scorsese wasn’t available to act/the part got cast to a cousin of the main actor),
everyone hates them because they have a lazy eye (no it’s because you are a cow)....

SunsetBeetch · 09/02/2020 18:25

karen she has been quoted as saying she survived cancer twice.

karencantobe · 09/02/2020 18:27

Yes I know, but I agree a cancer scare is more likely.
Or perhaps she had pre cancerous cells that were picked up by a smear and had treatment for this. I have heard one women describe this as having cancer and cancer treatment.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 09/02/2020 19:25

Looks like a genuine scare turned into a game of solo-Chinese-whispers and became ‘I’m a cancer survivor’.

Who knows what’s true but Jameela is a very unlucky lady if all the claims in the first screen shot are true...
