Jess would do well to read Karen Ingala Smith's speech to Scottish Parliament

kareningalasmith.com/2020/01/20/the-importance-of-women-only-spaces-and-services-for-women-and-girls-whove-been-subjected-to-mens-violence/

This is what we need a woman with an understanding of DV to be saying. Jess us like a soggy paper bag - gives the impression of being robust but absolutely pathetic under any pressure. And frankly I think it's a bloody insult to women victims of DV to keep using them to score woki even cookies.

ThePurported · 20/01/2020 18:05

Jess knows KIS and heard her evidence at the Women & Eq Committee hearing on domestic violence and rape crisis centres. She has no excuse.

Clymene · 20/01/2020 18:17

I didn't know that but I agree that she has no excuse.

And actually I think her using the victims of DV as a tool to make herself look good (she was a business development manager which I can't imagine involves much involvement with the hoi polloi actually using the service) makes her droning 'transwomen are women' even worse because it lends an extra sheen of credibility to her perspective that it's fine to thrown DV victims under the bus if you do individual risk assessments.

Jess is more interested in Jess's political progress than the needs of vulnerable women. If I wasn't clear on that before, I certainly am now.

Brava Jess. I hope you sleep soundly tonight.

Chocolatemice · 20/01/2020 18:22

There is NO individual risk assessment that would EVER show that it is a good idea to put a transwoman into a women’s refuge.

NotAssigned · 20/01/2020 18:35

I used to admire Jess. But (and it's not just the TWAW stuff) the more I hear the less impressed I am. Fortunately she won't win.

She does not seem to be able to follow an argument through. I actually agree with her that the 2 year living in gender nonsense in the GRA is ridiculous. It essentially defines womanhood as tired stereotypes. BUT the solution is not to remove that clause and bring in legal self ID. The solution is to repeal the GRA. No-one should be able to be legally recognised as something they are not.

Needmoresleep · 20/01/2020 18:38

I can't see her negotiating with Putin.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 20/01/2020 18:38

Agree, NotAssigned. The GRA should be scrapped.

VickyEadieofThigh · 20/01/2020 19:06

She ignored my question about the level of rape and sexual assaults, even in situations where women and girls can expect there to be a level of supervision such as schools and psychiatric wards.

I couldn't even bring myself to vote Labour now.
The party has been taken over by lunatics who have made their distain for women clear.

Both of these comments exemplify the situation women are in now. A Men's (sexual) rights movement has gleefully co-opted women both inside and outside political parties, major organisations, etc. and we find ourselves fighting not only for the rights we thought were a given, but even for the right to name ourselves.

We are, I'm afraid, at war. And we're facing massive opposition.

RicketyClickety · 20/01/2020 19:16

The GRA used to serve a purpose (to enable marriage for post-op transsexuals, at a time when gay marriage was unavailable).

There doesn't seem to be any actual legislative purpose in allowing everyone to be legally recognised as the sex they're not.

TheMostBeautifulDogInTheWorld · 20/01/2020 20:24

I'm really speechless.

I can't believe Phillips thought she could do a Mumsnet chat without knowing something about the place. I mean, I know she's busy at the minute. But how can she not know about the Portal Of Radicalisation?

I don't mean, "oh we must be famous, how dare she". But surely she ought to have worked out - given that Penis News interview - that there is a discussion happening, and that it might be an idea to find out where and what it's about, and that Mumsnet is very much a place where it's going on?

So how on earth did she think she'd get away with doing a Mumsnet webchat to which her main contribution was demonstrating that she doesn't have the faintest clue what this much-lied-about "spousal veto" in fact consists of, here of all places?

AnotherNightWatering · 20/01/2020 20:25

This is covered in the Mail
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7908273/Jess-Phillips-sparks-fury-Mumsnet-saying-trans-women-women.html
Although I don't actually see it on the front page. It came up in my Google newsfeed.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 20/01/2020 21:11

I've lost all faith in her ability to 'speak truth to power' . One trans woman sits in front of her and she caves like a school child. As for the Mumsnet chat, doesn't she have campaign aides or something to advise her or have they stitched her up? Worse that Gordon's biscuits.

Creepster · 20/01/2020 21:21

Can someone explain how being employed as an administrator at the Women's Aid charity when she left the Labour Party translates to "doing so much for women".
It has always struck me as odd when extremely well paid people who own or operate charities like the Komen Foundation, or Women's Aid, take credit for what the line staff and volunteers do for women.

Kit19 · 21/01/2020 12:47

It seems Jess Phillips is likely to withdraw from the leadership race this afternoon

TinselAngel · 21/01/2020 13:06

Where have you heard that?

Kit19 · 21/01/2020 13:18

@TinselAngel she’s doing a statement at 3pm - General consensus from commentators is she’s pulling out Tho ofc it could be something else - Hard to imagine what though

TinselAngel · 21/01/2020 13:20

Maybe it's a statement to say she's finally read the GRA, and was wrong GrinGrinGrin

Needmoresleep · 21/01/2020 13:23

Yes. I understand she can't get enough support from Unions to make it through to the next stage.

Kit19 · 21/01/2020 13:24

😂😂😂😂 good one @TinselAngel That’ll be on the day the devil skates to work

DuMondeB · 21/01/2020 13:24

She’s probably been talked out of continuing by Starmer’s team. She’s unlikely to win but could potentially be taking some first preferences that would otherwise go to him...

DuMondeB · 21/01/2020 13:25

Plum shadow cabinet role promised, probably.

BinkySodPlop · 21/01/2020 13:34

Maybe the risk assessments she mentioned were about potentially losing funding / woke bro points. They certainly weren't about safeguarding the female service users.

ThePurported · 21/01/2020 13:48

Well, good luck to her, but please god I don't want to see her carry on on the Women & Eq select committee. How could she be so misinformed about a policy area that is supposed to be her expertise?

Kilbranan · 21/01/2020 19:16

Another one bites the dust. When will politicians learn that saying transwomen are women is the best way to destroy your career and NOT the vote winner they seem to think it is Hmm
