I only know who they are due to DD watching their make up videos. They were on BBC 3s Glow Up program as a guest judge.
Apparently they were being blackmailed and so came out in a video, which is a bit shit for them.

not share spaces and access female services with cis women (apologies for that, it’s the only way to differentiate the two groups).

No it isn't. There is no such thing as "cis" and many women find it insulting and presumptuous. It is often deleted as it's against MN talk guidelines to call women that against our wishes. You don't have the right to label us. We are women, we don't need any prefix. So your question wasn't very respectful to us, was it?

CallofDoodee · 14/01/2020 23:09

I have watched her video now...

It is very clear that she is still very close to her mum and fully believes that her mum made the right choices for her as a child. She doesn't appear to harbour any resentment to her mum for taking her down that path, so hopefully this means she is totally happy with the path she has taken.

With regards to her boyfriend, she says she delayed telling him for a while until she felt secure and also safe enough to do so. She says she didn't want to leave it so long but she also couldn't tell him straight away. Fair enough I think. She also makes a point of urging other trans people to tell their partners ASAP, and seems to do this coming from a place of wanting people to be honest for the sake of the partner iyswim?

However, I was so disappointed in what she said about herself as a child, it was just all stereotypes. She said her mum 'knew' she was having a girl 'and she did have a girl' but there was obviously 'a bit of a problem'. And that her and her mum knew she was trans from a very early age because she played with dolls and Barbies and fake hair and wanted to wear dresses. What a damaging message to send to 12 million followers Sad

But overall, I think she was very brave to do this and I really hope that she is happy.

The difference between men and women isn't about surgery or make up and it's offensive to suggest that it is.

Creepster · 14/01/2020 23:36

The hard liners amongst you will still try to insist she should be excluded.
On the contrary, they should be included in the facilities appropriate to their sex.
As far as why this is front page news, I think that the influence of "Influencers" is newly discovered by mainstream media. They knew some made a career on Youtube but the size of the audience and the cash flow has come as a surprise. So, newsworthy.

Bronners1978

Which public toilets/changing rooms/hospital wards/prison estates should Nikky use?

Why, the same ones that Jane Faye, formerly known as John Ozimek uses, and the ones that Eddie Izzard uses, and Philip Bunce, and J Yaniv, and D Muscato, and Alex Drummond.
All those people share the same bodily sex as Nikky.
They also all claim to share the same 'gender identity' (albeit, not consistently for all of them) although I've yet to hear any of them explain what one of those is.
Nikky has everything in common with those people. Anatomy, and apparently also identity.

Unfortunately for all of them, they are all the opposite sex to half of us. And this half, my half, are entitled to distinguish ourselves from all of them, on account of us being the opposite sex to them.
I personally don't share a sex OR a 'gender identity' with any of them. (I don't believe gender identity actually exists as a communal group thing). I can't think of any reason why they should imagine we're a communal group.

So, whilst I'm certain that there are many, many people with whom Nikky will find both sex and 'gender' in common, allowing for shared, communal space, I'm even more certain that I have no commonality with Nikky.

There are of course many many people aside from those I've mentioned who would also be entirely content to share intimate spaces with Nikky et al. People of matching sex; people of opposite sex but the same purported identity. People pop up on these boards all the time to point out how happy they are to share with anyone born male, so long as they now 'identify as a woman', whatever that might mean.
And I say good luck to them.
Let's agree that extra spaces are needed.
The ones for people who demand privacy from the opposite sex, and extra for those who believe in communal gender identity and want to pee next to people who share similar thoughts.

Which leaves those of us who care about our own sex, and who value the importance of distinguishing ourselves from the opposite sex, with our same sex spaces intact.

rosesandcashmere · 14/01/2020 23:41

I didn't actually realise before I saw this post (and subsequently went to see the video) she hasn't traded on being trans, she's come out at this point and I say fair play to her. I'm a woman (born female, always female) and I'm nearly 6 feet tall so to all of you saying the height should've given it away - that's rude.

Thelnebriati · 14/01/2020 23:50

Its really not hard line to say that spaces and services for women are for women.

Women's sports are for women, women only Rape Crisis sessions are for women, women's DV shelters are for women. Women's hospital wards, also for women.
They are not mixed sex. The Equality Act supports this. All of the reasons why we need single sex spaces and services still exist, society has not changed for women.

UpfieldHatesWomen · 14/01/2020 23:55

I don't think anyone's suggested height alone was a factor in suspecting Nikkie was trans, but rather a combination of things. This is why it's usually very easy to tell who is trans - stature, voice, mannerisms, facial features, the way someone walks, bone structure, foot size, hand size, jawline, fat distribution etc. I don't know about anyone else, but with transmen I always notice their eyes look so much kinder than the average man's. It's not something I want to believe, but I'm often struck by it.

WomanBornNotWorn · 15/01/2020 00:00

I hope she takes the blackmailers to court

SylvanianFrenemies · 15/01/2020 00:01

I actually like Nikkie but it does explain the 6ft something height.

Er, no. I'm a woman (yes, with a vagina and XX chromosomes) and am 6ft something.

I'm gender critical but not totally comfortable with analysing someone who doesn't seem to be a TRA/MRA. Lots of people, trans and not, hold ridiculous stereotypes about what it means to be female or male.

rosesandcashmere · 15/01/2020 00:06

I agree @sylvanianfrenemies and I think anyone hinting at this on any thread loses all credibility. I possibly look kind eyed and I'm really tall... with massive hands
Also born female with a vagina and can't stand the term 'CIS'.
Have whatever opinions you want but perhaps don't judge so hard as I'm not in some sort of freak minority. Are all supermodels also men? 🙄

rosesandcashmere · 15/01/2020 00:08

@UpfieldHatesWomen I'd worry you'd think some actual women were trans with your mindset tbh! My feet are also an 8 (tall women have bigger feet, it's a standing upright thing...) crikey. I read these boards before thinking the hysteria was called for. Now I'm concerned people look at women like me in changing rooms thinking I'm a man because of their backwards stereotypes.

UpfieldHatesWomen · 15/01/2020 00:19

People have evolved over millions of years so they can detect the differences between men and women. I don't think I've ever in my life suspected an actual woman of being trans, but I did immediately think Nikkie was. The list of features that are different would be to long to list and probably with many on the micro-scale or to do with pheromones. There was an interesting article on medium about this but I can't find it right now. And can we cut out the sexist expressions such as 'hysteria'? Thanks

Cohle · 15/01/2020 00:23

You know it's honestly amazing that so many people think it's so obvious that she's trans but never mentioned it until today and it was deemed surprising enough to make the bbc news.

Doyoumind · 15/01/2020 00:23

I'm really tired of having to defend my comment on her height.

For people who can't be bothered to read the thread properly: I have said only positive things about Nikkie and have criticised the negative things others have said; I have watched her videos for some time and haven't just discovered her; I didn't know she was trans and have no problem with her now I know she is; I did know she was tall and thought the fact that Dutch people are often tall (proven by stats somewhere on the thread) was the reason; she would have been far taller than she is had she not had medical intervention. Also, I'm very well aware women can be over 6ft but it's significantly less likely than them being under 6ft and I also know that height alone cannot be used to ascertain sex, as if that needed to be said Hmm

I'm GC but I wish Nikkie all the best.

Doyoumind · 15/01/2020 00:27

I also said that Nikkie used to look and act quite differently early on in her career to those who now claim her mannerisms and makeup style give away her status.

Yes, you'd think the 'we can always tell' brigade would have picked up on it before now.

Aesopfable · 15/01/2020 00:36

The bar for transgender items being on the bbc is low and it would fit their ideology to say it was a surprise. I imagine most people clocked but didn’t think it was worth commenting on.

UpfieldHatesWomen · 15/01/2020 00:38

Here it is, @rosesandcasmere. Not a 'mindset' or reliance on 'sexist stereotypes', as you put it. medium.com/@katieja/but-how-can-you-tell-7901324d0919

Doyoumind · 15/01/2020 00:39

Nikkie has been making videos for 11 years. Do you really think everyone knew but didn't bother to say something that whole time? People are genuinely surprised. Why can't you believe that?

SylvanianFrenemies · 15/01/2020 00:41

If you are referring to my post @Doyoumind (not sure if you are), I was referencing your rather rude first post indicating height was a giveaway for someone being a transwoman. Your stuff about the person in question being Dutch came later. It's no big deal, but as a tall woman I'm going to continue to challenge stereotypes that suggest I'm less feminine.

My following comments were on the thread in general, not aimed at you.

snowblight · 15/01/2020 00:42

she has said she has yet to see a girl who identifies as trans who isn't either a lesbian, autistic or has suffered from past trauma, usually sexual.

Rubbish. If there had even been a sniff of her being trans there would have been a whole thread devoted to her on here long before now. Given the way ordinary trans people who are not well known have been picked apart on here before now, people would definitely have been discussing her here.

isabellerossignol · 15/01/2020 00:42

Weirdly I always thought that Nikkie was a not very feminine looking girl, but I didn't actually make the leap in my mind to thinking 'A-ha! Nikkie is transgender'.

However, I think seeing someone as a head and shoulders screenshot and not realising they were born male is very different to meeting someone in real life. The transwoman who I know personally looks very feminine in photographs, but not at all like a woman in real life.

snowblight · 15/01/2020 00:43

Cut and paste fail. Should have been replying to this one.

I imagine most people clocked but didn’t think it was worth commenting on.
