Right, not sure you’ll agree that this belongs in Feminism as such but as it involves women’s greatest fanboy (not) Owen Jones I thought it’d be of an interest. Just to show what sort of people support him and his ideas.
Giles Coren might be a tit but I can’t imagine his column readers visiting his adversaries‘ homes and upsetting their families. It’s the paragraph titled “Beyond a joke“.

My guess is they were planning to be a very noisy and threatening nuisance so that he would call the police, and then they could go on twitter and complain about how Coren had them arrested for objecting to homophobia.

Cunts.

BiologyIsReal · 07/01/2020 21:22

Owen Jones - the only five year old who looks as if he is 14.

He really is the gift that keeps on giving.

littlbrowndog · 07/01/2020 21:44

But don’t these people have lives

Not lives where they meet up@ and go round to someone’s house cos of something said on twitter

I still can’t understand how anyone with a functioning brain cell would think this is a thing they would do and then get on the bus or meet at th3 tube or get in a car and still think

Yeah here we go. Jeez

It’s like some sort of horrible madness

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 07/01/2020 21:56

That is an incredibly petty thing to go all angry mob over.

littlbrowndog · 07/01/2020 22:03

I don’t think they are cunts

I think they are totally off their heads and scary that as adult people they think it was a normal thing to do

Going to,a journalist home cos they didn’t like what he had written

Would they have dragged him out of his house and done what ?

Cam77 · 07/01/2020 22:07

Agree with this from the Independent:
“No excuse for the Twitter mob to take up arms, but the fact is, Giles, that what you said just wasn’t funny enough. It sounded nasty, mean, and without the protective shield of high humour, it did come across as homophobic.”
Also his claim that he didn’t know Jones was gay. Really? Seriously? Anyway, Owen Jones is great. A tad too left wing for me, but hearing passionate voices from across the political spectrum is what democracy is about.

StrangeLookingParasite · 07/01/2020 22:09

He really is the gift that keeps on giving.

He really is the git that keeps on giving.

As I read somewhere today.

MoltenLasagne · 07/01/2020 22:45

Where does 'Intimidating and harassing the family of a journalist for their stated views and/or humour' come in the scale of authoritarianism? Does it score higher or lower than projecting 'Repeat after us: Transwomen are women' on the Ministry of Justice?

TheTigersBride · 07/01/2020 22:50

Coren's tweet was not homophobic. It works equally well for a heterosexual man.

OJ is a prat.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 07/01/2020 22:55

Coren has a job, yes? So fairly predictable he wouldn't be home during the day? So who exactly did the mob expect to be at his house during the day? Do they view the families of people they don't like as valid targets?

Rubidium · 07/01/2020 23:02

Owen Jones - the only five year old who looks as if he is 14.

He'll be 40 when the next general election comes round in 2024. Seriously.

OverByYer · 07/01/2020 23:08

OJ should go back to selling the Socialist Worker on the steps of his old uni with Daddy’s trust fund to support him.

FloralBunting · 07/01/2020 23:39

Kittens, there you go, assuming the denizens of Twitter, getting a gang together to go and harass a man and his family because he's gauche and unfunny on Twitter, understand what 'having a job' means. I mean, fucking hell, they listen to what Owen Jones thinks about 'the working class', why would they have a clue about jobs and work and proletariat shit like that? (Obvioudly, I'm not actually suggesting GC is working class, but still...)

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 07/01/2020 23:51

Maybe we could call them the unworking class.

SuckingDieselFella · 07/01/2020 23:58

I had no clue Owen Jones is gay.

Coren didn't write a tweet. He was quoted in a Times article written by another journalist.

He's had vile abuse on twitter from the Corbynistas, stuff about him abusing his own children. It's no surprise they turned up at his door. He's Jewish.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/01/2020 00:05

I think the conversation we should be having is, OK, let's say we all agree that what Coren said was homophobic. Does that make it OK to turn up at his house in angry mob form and frighten his wife and children? A great many people seem to think that it does, and I'd argue that that's a fairly significant problem that will keep the left out of power until it's solved. And I say that as someone who's arguably further left than Owen Jones is.

SuckingDieselFella · 08/01/2020 00:18

It wasn't in any way homophobic. That's nonsense.

In an article by The Times political diarist Matt Chorley he was asked for his 2020 predictions. He said Owen Jones could end up in the House of Lords “chasing young researchers with tight bottoms up and down the corridors”.

How on earth is this homophobic? Can you explain please, @TheProdigalKittensReturns? He doesn't suggest the researchers are men and there would be no reason to do so if he doesn't actually know Jones is gay.

SuckingDieselFella · 08/01/2020 00:19

Has Owen Jones condemned what his followers did?

If not, that tells you all you need to know about him.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/01/2020 00:21

I think you're missing my point. What if what Coren said had been clearly, unarguably homophobic? Would that make the actions of Jones's followers acceptable? That is a far more significant issue, and one that needs dealing with.

Intensicle · 08/01/2020 00:28

This sums up the Labour left. Lash out at anything perceived as criticism viciously and disproportionately. I find Giles Coren best ignored but what kind of people turn up on a writer’s doorstep to harass them for something printed in the mainstream media?

twitter.com/RLong_Bailey/status/1214475720577159168?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1214475720577159168&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com%2Fpolitics%2Flive%2F2020%2Fjan%2F07%2Flabour-leadership-long-bailey-adopts-pro-immigration-stance-as-she-launches-campaign-with-today-interview-live-news%3Fpage%3Dwith%253Ablock-5e146c698f08c3972264636e

If that link works it’s a thread where, when told by their own favoured leadership candidate that it’s time to stop attacking other parts of the Labour Party on Twitter, they respond by pointing out that all this negativity has been caused by the Blairites, the PLP and people who are closet Tories. The absolute antisemitic icing on the cake is when the person Rebecca Long Bailey tweeted with her ‘let’s all play nicely message’ replies by tweeting, for no apparent reason, “Do you unreservedly condemn the apartheid regime of Israel?”

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/01/2020 00:30

It's the politics of Year Zero and the Cultural Revolution and it's eating the left alive.

SuckingDieselFella · 08/01/2020 00:32

I am not missing your point.

Your point is irrelevant because Giles Coren wasn't homophobic.

You are suggesting that the mob could justify their behaviour if he had been homophobic. But if their problem is with Giles Coren, why did they go to his family home, where his children live? His twitter profile picture shows his very young son and unless they are complete meat heads they must have known that children could be at home. There are no circumstances at all which could vindicate these knuckle-dragging halfwits.

Intensicle · 08/01/2020 00:33

I think you’re agreeing with each other.

SuckingDieselFella · 08/01/2020 00:35

Yes, Wrong Daily was on the news tonight saying that Corbyn's election policies were fabulous and he lost because of a smear campaign by the media.

She left out the word "Zionist" but you could tell she was thinking it.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/01/2020 00:36

You are suggesting that the mob could justify their behaviour if he had been homophobic.

That is the exact opposite of what I am suggesting.
