Owen Jones “supporters” “visit” Giles Coren’s home

Right, not sure you’ll agree that this belongs in Feminism as such but as it involves women’s greatest fanboy (not) Owen Jones I thought it’d be of an interest. Just to show what sort of people support him and his ideas.
Giles Coren might be a tit but I can’t imagine his column readers visiting his adversaries‘ homes and upsetting their families. It’s the paragraph titled “Beyond a joke“.

Best comment BTL:

"I've heard that tutting and moving away is a strong defence against men who like to put themselves where they shouldn't be"

GeordieTerf · 07/01/2020 16:21

Two cheeks of the same arse

Hummm · 07/01/2020 16:22

Who were the people who visited intimidating a woman and her children? Who sent them? So now people are calling the police on individuals or people representing who? - Owen Jones, the LGBTQ+ lobby, The Guardian, the Labour party? - are taking it upon themselves intimidating families when they don't like a Tweet when the man of the house is out?

GrinitchSpinach · 07/01/2020 16:24

What was the average age of this mob, I wonder?

I was just re-reading @babybeginner’s Twitter thread on the “Lord of the Flies” generation, and this incident brings it to mind...

This is a different generation than ever before in history. This is a generation that grew up in a different place from their parents. What do I mean by that?

The internet is a place and the first parents to have children grow up there never realized that.

HollowTalk · 07/01/2020 16:29

Owen Jones must have been furious that someone didn't know he was gay.

Alsohuman · 07/01/2020 16:34

Owen Jones is a vile little misogynist. Bullying an innocent woman and children is right up his street.

Sexequality · 07/01/2020 16:46

Two incidents:

  1. An unfunny joke on twitter
  2. A mob intimidating and harassing women and children at home

Which do we think the police are most likely to be interested in and record? Hmm

ErrolTheDragon · 07/01/2020 16:49

Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right

True, but not all wrongs are equal. And even nowadays, I don't think a dubious tweet is on the same scale as harassing a woman and children because of her husbands tweet - though in some circles the first type of 'incident' seems to generate more outrage than the second.Confused

Cam77 · 07/01/2020 16:53

I don't know what OJ did or didnt do but I did follow that link to that "joke"ie homophobic tweet by the smug looking Times reporter. You are trying to take the piss out of someone - fine no problem with that - but why reference OJ's sexual orientation. Is OJ particularly known as being very promiscuous? No? Thought not. So its homophobic, simple as. Prick.

Binterested · 07/01/2020 17:01

His ludicrous photo tweet last year suggests he is but possibly only to further the socialist cause Hmm.

Hummm · 07/01/2020 17:04

In 2020 UK,

You can be attacked at Speakers corner taking a photograph whilst waiting for details of a second meeting venue
You can be arrested for a Tweet
You are compelled to be anti science in belief and speech
You can be taken to court in private prosecutions for a Tweet
You can be blocked from travelling to the USA for an opinion
You can have your Next account cancelled for an opinion
You and your children can't complain when placed on a hospital ward or public changing room with a naked man
You can be sacked for a Tweet
You can be blocked from volunteering for an opinion
Women and children can be visited by mobs of men at home because of a man's Tweet

Who are the people behind this and shy are they given so much power?

Imnobody4 · 07/01/2020 17:04

Oh for heaven's sake if Owen Jones had the slightest bit of maturity he would have just ignored it. He gets stupider and more desperate with age. I can't believe that I did once like him.

Fieldofgreycorn · 07/01/2020 17:08

but why reference OJ's sexual orientation.

He didn’t.

Goosefoot · 07/01/2020 17:08

OK, maybe I am really dumb, but how is that tweet homophobic? I can see that it's pretty crass to say someone will be running after young interns and as far as I know OJ isn't into that sort of behaviour, but it seems to be a sort of equal opportunity vulgarity to me.

Waterandlemonjuice · 07/01/2020 17:10

Hummmuk, quite. It’s tragic and frightening.

FloralBunting · 07/01/2020 17:16

Goose, I presume the argument goes that if Coren was fully aware of Owen Jones sexuality, it could be read as a suggestion that Jones is a potential sexual predator and if ever he got into a powerful position, would use the opportunity to sexual predate young men.

Whereas I suspect the intended target was actually the suspected predatory activities of the seasoned and older political classes, much like a hoary old joke about judges wearing lacy knickers under their robes. Basically not especially original or witty, but not intended to actually suggest Jones is a predatory old perve in the making.

FloralBunting · 07/01/2020 17:18

And I stress, not even remotely a justification for intimidating the man's family.

EntirelyAnonymised · 07/01/2020 17:21

I assume it’s the references to tight behinds that have got people in a froth. Of course he could’ve meant it in a youthful bum cheeks of the opposite sex way. [shrug]

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 07/01/2020 17:26

ooops, the thread has moved on - thank you for the shared tokens! Off to read.

Thank you Igneococcus, I will try that out.

Goosefoot · 07/01/2020 17:28

Right, well, I see the bum cheek thing though also thought it meant youthful. It doesn't seem likely to be what he meant, to me.
I don't have much time for the idea that because someone is gay they aren't as likely to be a dirt old man as the next person who isn't, and we all have to keep quiet about that possibility, even in bad jokes.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 07/01/2020 17:33

I read Coren’s tweet - tight bottoms can refer to either sex, as PP not everyone is as interested in Owen Jones’ private life as Owen Jones is.
By no means I’m a fan of Giles Coren (although occasionally he is funny), in fact I do have a personal gripe about something he said yonks ago. I do however think that Owen’s followers are a mob (not all followers etc. Hmm) and it begs a question who sort of people he attracts with his opinions (i.e. facts according to him).

There are uncontacted Amazonian tribes who know that Owen Jones is gay.

Giles Coren is a horrible man.

This is one of those 'why can't they both lose' situations.
