What are fishies? Channel 4 Big Fat Quiz of the Year

Just that. A question on the Big Fat Quiz of the Year posed by drag queens, what are fishies.

Programme presented by Jimmy Carr. Participants Noel Fielding, someone who does the BA security videos, @AsimC86, Roisin Conaty, Maya Jama, MTV presenter and former girlfriend of Stormzy, Richard Ayoade and Dara O'Briain.
It would not be acceptable for any other group of people to be named accordingly to the supposed smell of their genitals, but it's ok when it comes to women, channel 4.

I got the same reply from channel 4. Didn’t answer any of my concerns. Complete waste of time

HairyBauble · 04/01/2020 12:02

I have replied to Channel 4 for what it's worth.

Dear x

I do not object to "edgy" humour and to be honest, it is patronising to suggest this is why I was offended.

A comment was made, saying that to emulate a "real" woman, you must smell of fish, and the genitals were indicated as a source of the smell. This is a) untrue b) misogynistic and c) went unchallenged by any panellist.

I do not believe that you would be brushing this off so lightly if the programme had said to be a "real Asian" you had to smell like curry or that all gay men's genitals smelled of faeces. Racism and homophobia are rightly condemned - why are women fair game?

I have escalated my complaint to Ofcom.

Kind regards

HairyBauble

HadEnuff20 · 04/01/2020 12:26

I have sent a complaint to Ofcom. But to be honest will choose not to watch Jimmy Carr again.

Aaarrgghhh · 04/01/2020 12:29

Why are people constantly mentioning Jimmy Carr? Did he say women smelt of fish? No, place the blame where it belongs.

Luaa · 04/01/2020 13:11

It bothered me at the time but I didn't do anything, seeing this has prompted me to make a complaint.

loserssaywhat · 04/01/2020 13:58

I can't stand Jimmy Carr so I avoid anything he's in. I didn't see this show but I'm staggered at the trans rights community ..they're even hijacking our misogynist slurs now?
Is there anything they won't do?
How can this be offensive to people without vaginas?

Strongmummy · 04/01/2020 17:04

@loserssaywhat can I correct you. I accept that trans women are women (I know that’s unpopular here but I do).

However, what I don’t accept is drag queens, ie most often gay men, being misogynist and offensive to their muses

Strongmummy · 04/01/2020 17:05

@Aaarrgghhh coz he’s a tax avoiding twat 🤣🤣

Aaarrgghhh · 04/01/2020 17:17

Strongmummy well yeah, I know that. Every comedian on any of his shows loves to take the piss out of him for that. But did he actually come up with the fishies slang for drag queens? I don’t think he did so it’s irrelevant really.

Aaarrgghhh · 04/01/2020 17:18

Also, didn’t realise both the last comments are from you but I wanted to ask. What makes you think trans women are women? I can tell you for a fact that they aren’t and if you seriously think drag is misogynistic then I’m sorry but what planet are you on to not think the same of transwomen? Truly mind boggling.

Strongmummy · 04/01/2020 17:25

@Aaarrgghhh 1) I am not getting into a debate on my views on trans women on this thread. I answered @loserssaywhat to clarify that feminists who do accept trans women would feel offended by the use of that comment 2) I don’t think drag is misogyny. Where did you get that from in my post? If men are respectful to their muses, ie women, I enjoy it. Using the term “fishy” isn’t respectful

Cushycat · 04/01/2020 17:26

I accept that trans women are women (I know that’s unpopular here but I do).

How so? Hmm

Cushycat · 04/01/2020 17:27

I 'accept' that transwomen exist - I do not accept that they are women! Nobody does!

Aaarrgghhh · 04/01/2020 17:27

No, those that believe never do want a debate and I know why. You can’t argue your point because when you do it all falls apart.

Strongmummy · 04/01/2020 17:29

@Aaarrgh it’s more that it’s not worth my while. I won’t change your mind and you won’t change mine. Therefore it’s just pointless. For my own mental health I tend to avoid futile conflict. I hope you understand

Pulpfiction1 · 04/01/2020 17:30

I saw this and was disgusted.

I hope that it opened more people's eye up to the fact that drag queens are sexist, misogynistic and no better than black face.

Cushycat · 04/01/2020 17:35

I hope that it opened more people's eye up to the fact that drag queens are sexist, misogynistic and no better than black face.

Absolutely.

Pulpfiction1 · 04/01/2020 17:56

I've put a complaint in straight to ofcom.

loserssaywhat · 04/01/2020 18:01

@strongmummy as much as I respect your opinion, in my opinion transwomen are men.
There is not a medication, surgical procedure or anything else on the face of the planet that can change essential biology.
They can take all the hormones known to man, wear make up and a dress and mutilate their genitals every which way from Sunday but they remain men.

Cushycat · 04/01/2020 18:05

strongmummy is well aware of this. There is not a peson on the planet who believes that men can magically become women. And even those who claim that they DO believe this, show instantly that they KNOW transwomen are male by according them special status and privilege that would never be afforded to a woman.

It is all nonsense.

Cushycat · 04/01/2020 18:06

person sorry

Strongmummy · 04/01/2020 18:06

@loserssaywhat yes, and I respect your view. The point I was making was that even those of us who are trans supporters could be disgusted at this term.

loserssaywhat · 04/01/2020 18:09

I have no idea why you directed your comment at me strongmummy.
My comment was aimed at those TRAS who are calling the term 'fishy' transphobic as pointed out by another poster.

Cushycat · 04/01/2020 18:09

And stop saying that women who do not believe in magical sex changes are not 'trans supporters'. As far as I can see women who stand up for women are both compassionate and supportive towards those who are confused about their gender but not to the point where they will give up their rights.

Strongmummy · 04/01/2020 18:13

@loserssaywhat apologies I misunderstood

@cushycat I don’t think it’s up to you to decide the terms I use. I’ve also seen some vitriol directed towards trans women on here and so I can’t agree with your point. We’re not going to change each other’s minds and so there’s no point in continuing this. I respect your views however
