What are fishies? Channel 4 Big Fat Quiz of the Year

Procrastinator2 · 26/12/2019 23:40

Just that. A question on the Big Fat Quiz of the Year posed by drag queens, what are fishies.

Programme presented by Jimmy Carr. Participants Noel Fielding, someone who does the BA security videos, @AsimC86, Roisin Conaty, Maya Jama, MTV presenter and former girlfriend of Stormzy, Richard Ayoade and Dara O'Briain.
It would not be acceptable for any other group of people to be named accordingly to the supposed smell of their genitals, but it's ok when it comes to women, channel 4.

The feminist section of mumsnet is pretty exclusive. And of course women disagree

....In that it is a forum in which people ( not all women, either) discuss issues as they relate to women's rights and experiences.....So, yes, it is pretty exclusively to do with feminism - in the sense of valuing women and wanting to look out for their interests.

Cushycat · 04/01/2020 21:00

Sex positive red fucking flags flying for me there.

Aaarrgghhh · 04/01/2020 21:57

Our views are really not accepted on mumsnet

Well.. duh. If we don’t agree then I won’t accept your opinion. I like to believe in facts.

Aaarrgghhh · 04/01/2020 22:00

I’m just making the point that the feminist section of mumsnet is pretty exclusive.

Make the damn posts you want to see then. Stop expecting women to not talk about what they want just because you don’t want to hear it. If you want posts on a certain subject then fucking post one. It’s not difficult.

shedquarters · 04/01/2020 22:01

so you’re basically telling women of colour they’re wrong....ok

Back to the topic for a second. I was thinking about this, and how saying women smell fishy is as bad as saying men are cheesy. And it's not the same. There are plenty of stereotypes about men being dirty, lazy, messy and smelly. You know - they can't do housework properly, they can't wipe their bums properly and leave skid marks, they don't shower properly, they pee on the floor. Who comes off worse for those? It isn't men. It's women. Instead of men being harmed and held back by those unpleasant stereotypes , it's women who are expected to just accept that's how men are and we need to clean up after them and put up with it. Men don't get stigmatised and ostracised for being dirty because women will just clean up their shit!

If you want to make a stereotype about men cause harm then you need to attach it to a marginalised group of men, gay or disabled or w/e. It doesn't work for just "men". Any general negative masculine stereotype is just something to put up with.

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 05/01/2020 17:35

Jesus Christ, what on earth was all that upthread?

I respect facts, biology. As a great many educated people on here also do.

I used to know a cool girl feminist who believed that men could become women. Think her feminism was bent out of shape by desperately wanting to please men. I don't filter my feminism through what might be welcomed by men. I find that ruins objectivity somewhat.

Tocopherol · 06/01/2020 12:48

Slowly and then over the last few months a bit quicker I've become a lot happier to exclude (oh no!) things and people from 'feminism'. Latest is, can this person define what a woman is without using the words identify or feel? If the answer is no I now happily exclude them from the category of feminist.

another drag slang quiz, second question, seems the BBC have not learned or do not care

RuffleCrow · 11/01/2020 07:57

Yes it's part of the woke inversion of language that just as men are now women if they say so, since about 2014, Feminism has become "women being nice".

FrogsFrogs · 11/01/2020 11:13

So the BBC have had all these complaints and have decided to put this quiz up (date is 10 Jan 2020) despite all the complaints they've had from women who say relating women to fish because our cunts stink is offensive.

I'm actually really surprised. The first they maybe didn't know, this is deliberate then it feels.

JellySlice · 11/01/2020 11:37

According to that BBC3 quiz I'm a drag expert Hmm I have never watched the programme and dislike that sort of appropriative, hyper-sexualised drag. Yet the answers were fairly obvious - just choose the nastiest or most controlling or contrived ones.

I filled in the satisfaction survey afterwards, gave it the lowest score, and expressed my disgust at fishy.

Sexequality · 11/01/2020 11:56

Were the complaints to the BBC or Channel 4? This thread was about Channel 4: we need to do the same for the BBC

FrogsFrogs · 12/01/2020 02:55

Oh good point.

So the quiz with the question about fishy was C4

And this quiz is on BBC

How the hell are multiple channels promoting this language? I mean they must know what it means. C4, or at least the person who wafted in front of their groin at the fishy point clearly did. BBC must know. It's not a mistake is it, they think, yes this seems like a cool thing to ask on our quiz Confused

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 15/01/2020 17:21

Just looked on OfCom's website and it looks as though a sizeable chunk of us complained. Good stuff!

That was over two weeks - so 29 all in all. Apologies for the rubbish screenshots. Dont know why they are so pixellated

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 15/01/2020 17:29

I shit you not, but I genuinely saw a post or article this week about how fish is a transphobic term because it reminds/others tw that they don't have vaginas which can smell of fish as they suggest.

I thought I'd saved it but I can't for the life of me find anything linked now, which is infuriating.

Ereshkigal · 15/01/2020 18:08

Yes this is discussed upthread. That interpretation was a general TRA perspective on Twitter following the showing of the Big Fat Quiz on C4, not just a one off extremist.

ClumzyOwlz · 15/01/2020 18:12

Well, when I was at school, girls would say guys had "cheesy" dicks, boys would say girls had "fishy" vaginas, so maybe we could just start using "cheesies" to describe unhygienic men? I mean, personally, as a young person in early 20s, I've never heard someone get called a "fishy" as a noun.

ClumzyOwlz · 15/01/2020 18:13

I mean, smelly genitals come from both sexes.

terfsandwich · 23/01/2020 08:18

Vaguely relevant to this thread, or at least, I thought of this thread when I saw this ad again behind a public toilet door in Melbourne.
My immediate thought when I first saw it several months ago was that it shamed women. What are your thoughts?

Institutionalised misogyny.
