What are fishies? Channel 4 Big Fat Quiz of the Year

Procrastinator2 · 26/12/2019 23:40

Just that. A question on the Big Fat Quiz of the Year posed by drag queens, what are fishies.

Programme presented by Jimmy Carr. Participants Noel Fielding, someone who does the BA security videos, @AsimC86, Roisin Conaty, Maya Jama, MTV presenter and former girlfriend of Stormzy, Richard Ayoade and Dara O'Briain.
It would not be acceptable for any other group of people to be named accordingly to the supposed smell of their genitals, but it's ok when it comes to women, channel 4.

More rohypnol. Most het people don't realise the connotation. Fishy applied to people generally means dubious, suspicious. So now another misogynistic slur will slip into our language.

This.

Ffs can you imagine "What is nob cheese?" appearing in next year's quiz? And someone seriously explaining that in the world of Drag Kings "the better you 'pass' the Cheesier your Nob is"???!!

And this. "What's a smeggy?" "Oh, a woman who passes as a man because we all know how poor most men's hygiene is, don't we? Wink wink."

Let's complain. This is vile.

On it.

334bu · 27/12/2019 11:05

Have complained. How can anyone find it amusing to use a slur based on a perception of and attitude towards women which results in women dying of the cold in menstruation huts?

mostimproved · 27/12/2019 12:37

I've complained - never complained about a tv show before but I was disgusted by this!

InionEile · 27/12/2019 13:21

More proof, as if we needed it, that drag queen culture is nothing but misogyny in disguise, men (usually gay men) ridiculing what they think women really are to get laughs and to take away our power over them.

Thinkingabout1t · 27/12/2019 14:34

I recently heard
“Why is blackface disgusting but drag is harmless?
Because drag only insults women.”

Made me think ....

JaneAustenFanClub · 27/12/2019 16:35

I suggest complaining to Ofcom too:
www.ofcom.org.uk/tv-radio-and-on-demand/how-to-report-a-complaint
I usually enjoy The Big Fat Quiz but am thoroughly unimpressed by this misogyny.

nevermorelenore · 27/12/2019 17:35

That's gross.

In Children of Men, the Fishes were a militant, left-wing organisation who used terrorist tactics to silence opponents. That's what I thought of when I first saw the thead title!

MorbidMuch · 27/12/2019 17:37

Baga Chipz has apologised for the use of the word on Twitter.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/12/2019 17:43

Never used the term but did waft her question card over the genitalia of the other drag queen, underlining the 'whiffiness' of the term!!

Even DH flinched when he realised what they had said... the fishier you smell the better you pass! Got to be right, after all, all women stink!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/12/2019 17:44

Bollocks! Missed the air quotes

"her"

Just complained. Fed up to the back teeth with revolting, grotesque men trying to dominate women with their sick, twisted insults.

Siameasy · 27/12/2019 19:49

Yeah I’ve heard this from a friend who is into drag-he tells me drag queens love women. I said I don’t get that impression.
At school if a boy had touched a girl’s genitals they would say “fish”.
And yes yes about men’s dicks. They often don’t wipe at all after weeing, yes to skid marks and pissing on the floor.
They laugh at our genitals but funny how they are all so desperate to touch them. Hmmm

Justhadathought · 27/12/2019 20:57

Yes, that's the cliched fall back excuse.......But the habit of revering divas, and the reality liking 'actua'l women are two different things altogether. Divas are fine - & they are put up on some sort of iconic pedestal......all over-blown stereotype and two dimensional character - just like a drag queen...the more blowsy the better......

But real women and their bodies inspire disgust and repulsion. Even the 'adored mother' is only adored so long as she remains an icon; a symbol....her frailties and earthly reality despised.

Knewmee · 27/12/2019 21:55

Complained too. Really vile. Seriously, why on earth do women laugh along with jokes about the supposedly foul smell of their genitalia?

GeriAtric · 27/12/2019 22:55

I thought it was a disgusting thing to have in a quiz show. The fact it's so normal and accepted shocks me.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 27/12/2019 23:00

Thanks for posting the link, I complained too.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 27/12/2019 23:02

Baga Chipz has apologised for the use of the word on Twitter

Dd loves her, its good to see that maybe some of the ’younger’ artists are rethinking this

Or am i being a bit optimistic again

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 27/12/2019 23:04

Nope

Im being optimistic Sad

MyMajesty · 27/12/2019 23:21

Dd loves her

It's okay to say him.
The whole point of drag is that it's men dressed up.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 27/12/2019 23:27

Yeah i know my Grin

Habit....

NextdoorNeighbourIsATwat · 27/12/2019 23:27

Have complained. We need to start fighting back on this sort of low-level, background noise mysogyny.

I'm trying to think of another group of people that C4 would happily offend in this way. If you translate it along racist lines, it's obvious just how regressive it is.

zanahoria · 28/12/2019 08:54

"The correct answer was that fishies are drag queens that pass as women"

but none of them do

RuffleCrow · 28/12/2019 09:22

That's so true @Justhadathought.

I had a gay 'friend' growing up who worshipped Madonna and was always going on about how gorgeous a model-like female mutual friend was. But the rest of us flawed females? He could barely disguise his contempt. Time spent with him was a constant stream of 'jokes' at our expense. I think there was another part of him that did like us but it couldn't compete with his misogyny. Luckily we didn't stay friends for long. I still feel afraid on some level when i think back on it though.

Justhadathought · 28/12/2019 10:14

That's the hope.....that drag will be seen as normal; as a way of further mainstreaming gay culture and the social acceptability' of homosexuality. They hadn't bargained on any debate, discussion or criticism.
