The lady that called in was ace! I'm new to these sorts of issues but feel she put it in a really eloquent way and made the issue apparent to anyone.

I would have liked to be able to touch on dv a bit more.

Felt JS's answer was very poor and evasive

Try again:

Jo Swinson taking calls on Radio 5 at 9am
zanahoria · 09/12/2019 11:07

The caller was great but GC arguments are simple and clear

This is why transactivists call for no debate.

theflushedzebra · 09/12/2019 11:09

Round of applause for Anna Brew

The Leader of the Liberal Democrats cannot say what a woman is. My brain just cannot compute that.

Justhadathought · 09/12/2019 11:10

Jo Swinson is not really the leader of the Lib-Dems - she is merely the figure head. She simply does not have any power, I believe, to effect anything.

BovaryX · 09/12/2019 11:10

Neuro,
That’s outrageous. It means it’s not possible to refute this absurd argument by citing statistics. It’s manipulation of data to render it meaningless. And I bet it’s politically motivated.

theflushedzebra · 09/12/2019 11:12

The more Jo Swinson talks, the more her policies unravel. Not just on self ID, on everything, it seems.

She just doesn't come across well at all. Even stuff that I agree with her on (eg brexit) she doesn't come across well Confused

theflushedzebra · 09/12/2019 11:14

She simply does not have any power, I believe, to effect anything.

I suppose you're right - she admitted as much on R4 last Friday - she said she had no power to expel Rennard, (I didn't even realise he was still a member!) or to stop him being on the campaign trail.

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/12/2019 11:21

Exactly Bovary. Appalling.

She spluttered over the gender pay gap / Philip Bunce question too.

Melroses · 09/12/2019 11:23

I don't know how they keep getting away with this 'most vulnerable' narrative.

The most vulnerable people in society are those who cannot work, cannot feed themselves, cannot look after themselves, have no agency and need others to do this for them. They are vulnerable to abuse, neglect, exploitation because of their reliance on others.

When I think of the most vulnerable I think of people like the woman in a coma who gave birth in a US care home, people in inadequate care homes with no family and people with no money and no means of ever getting any.

ahumanfemale · 09/12/2019 11:24

NeurotrashWarrior that's terrible!! I'm furious about this. Hopefully there are stats to go on up until the point that T were included and any subsequent increase can be fairly assumed to be a result of merging men with women.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 09/12/2019 11:25

Deary me this is just embarrassing now.

It's really very simple, Jo, woman-adult human female, female-of the sex class that produces large, immobile gametes.

That's really all there is to it, and no, the word does not include XY trans people, just the XX ones.

I'm cringing at the thought of politicians needing the birds and the bees explained to them but apparently that's where we're at.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 09/12/2019 11:25

She is mental

Datun · 09/12/2019 11:32

What is a woman is definitely the question that instantly exposes the idiocy.

It doesn't reveal the massive raft of problems, or why sex-based rights are required in a sexist society, or anything about gender stereotyping, what an inner identity means, or any of that.

But it does make people look instantly ridiculous. It's a shortcut to the bottom line.

Watching Swinson flounder and claiming that, despite the 6 1/2 thousand genetic differences between men and women you can't tell people's sex, is all it takes to reveal the delusion.

Justhadathought · 09/12/2019 11:33

I don't know how they keep getting away with this 'most vulnerable' narrative

Most transwoman murders occur where the victims, most often, are involved in prostitution, and killed by clients or boyfriends. But even then, the numbers are in the hundreds....whereas I understand that over 50,000 women have been murdered in Mexico alone over a couple of decades.1000 women killed by men in the last decade years in Britain

Knowhowufeel · 09/12/2019 11:34

The question that I would've loved to have been asked is:
'What are the differences between Male and female?'
Also when she said cis and trans, I'd have followed up with only men can be transwomen, so therefore they are fundamentally different to women, and comparing black women to transwomen is racist. Black women have nothing biologically in common with transwomen, bc TW are all men.

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/12/2019 11:36

Tweet about those stats:

theunknownknown · 09/12/2019 11:39

knowhowufeel
Perfect. We should all practice this as a question and follow up when the woke start spluttering.
It's going to become my go to set of faux questioning with a tilted face...

DrIrisFenby · 09/12/2019 11:41

Well done Anna Flowers.

Hang your head in shame Jo Swinson.

dayoftheclownfish · 09/12/2019 11:44

Great to have this clip, though. "Doing a Jo Swinson" might just become a byword for evasive, subjective burbling ...

zanahoria · 09/12/2019 11:47

" She just doesn't come across well at all"

Llenty of people have radios on in the background, even someone half listening would recognise the sound of a politician dying. Lib dem campaign managers are probably pulling their hair out at the thought of her next interview.

zanahoria · 09/12/2019 11:49

On the disaterous inferviews scale, that one scores a 'Prince Andrew'

TheLittleBrownFox · 09/12/2019 11:55

I used to be a lib dem voter

Twitter responses are heartening, at least.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 09/12/2019 11:56

Lib dem campaign managers are probably pulling their hair out at the thought of her next interview.

Why? Presumably they are aware of their own party's manifesto. That Swinson can't defend that manifesto is not down to her alone. It's down to the manifesto being indefensible. The campaign mangers should maybe reflect on that.

BarbaraStrozzi · 09/12/2019 11:58

Those who have a Telegraph sub - Blowers' cartoon today is a gem (all the party leaders in their Christmas jumpers - Swinson's is coming unravelled!)
