You've just described my natural political leanings @barbarastrozzi - they could have easily had my vote had they steered well clear of biology-denial . Ah well, i'll be sure to write something entertaining on my spoiled ballot!

MotherOfSoupDragons · 09/12/2019 13:12

Oh god that was painful to listen to. I think LibDems may be best placed to beat the Tory incumbent in my constituency but how can I vote for that? Can I hold my nose hard enough?

ThePurported · 09/12/2019 13:15

I've seen Belcher on the telly, in my view this is a person who will never compromise and use all sorts of tricks to get their way.

Belcher is a liability for the Lib Dems. The suicide claims were unforgivable.

popehilarious · 09/12/2019 13:42

Great work that woman (Anna) for persisting with the reasonable questions.

TimeLady · 09/12/2019 14:44

Never mind Justin, Swinson might well find herself in the same room as Belcher and maybe she was subconsciously weighing up the consequences if she capitulated to scientific fact.

Jeez, this is the party that welcomed Aimee Challenor when they defected from the Greens, FFS.

BarbaraStrozzi · 09/12/2019 15:18

Ruffle it's not far off mine either. I'm probably a bit further to the left, but with a distaste for the full on social engineering and authoritarian tendencies of the far left.

LangCleg · 09/12/2019 15:56

Their voter base has always been centre-left - the sort of person who wants a bit of redistribution of wealth and a decent social security safety net, but quite likes a bit of regulated capitalism and certainly not full on socialism. They sold out that voter base completely with the coalition.

Before even trans stuff, it was the Orange bookers that messed them up. LibDem leadership went right wing on the economics while maintaining social liberalism. Now the social liberalism has morphed even further into outright libertarianism, hence the trans support. So they've done a double whammy on their slightly-left-of-centre, kindly-not-libertarian-socially-liberal voter base.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 09/12/2019 16:37

This is from Swinson's interview in Penis news:

"Do you agree with your candidate Phillip Lee that transgender prisoners should be held in segregated facilities?
No, I don’t. We know that trans prisoners – as the trans population as a whole – are more likely to encounter discrimination and violence than commit it. We saw with the tragic deaths of Vikki Thompson and Joanne Latham in 2015 the impact of forcing trans women to serve their sentences in male prisons. I supported the changes made by the Ministry of Justice to guidelines following these women’s deaths – making clear that the prison system should treat prisoners according to the gender with which they identify, including assessing them for risk in exactly the same way as cis prisoners – and was deeply disappointed to see these changes rolled back as the government abandoned its commitments to trans recognition and equality."

It's almost as if Karen White didn't happen.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 09/12/2019 16:42

Hang on, Kavtron - Jo Swinson says this is in the CURRENT Pink News?

Are you joking me?

I can see a lot of words quoted, summarised thus: "Lib Dems, for all your state sanctioned rape needs"

FFS.

Why is housing rapists with women not a hate crime?

Birdsfoottrefoil · 09/12/2019 16:44

We know that the transpopulation as a whole are more likely to commit murder than be murdered, and transprisoners are almost as likely to commit sexual offences as not.

DodoPatrol · 09/12/2019 17:31

Tragic death of Joanne Latham? As in, the suicide of the male person serving life for violent murder, who was too dangerous to house in any women's facility because of the nature of their crime?

Not the best example to give of a person 'more likely to encounter discrimination and violence than commit it'.

DodoPatrol · 09/12/2019 17:34

Honestly, do they not even google the names?

zanahoria · 09/12/2019 17:38

"Implicit in all of this is an assumption that trans women are, in some way, more likely to be violent. It is just not borne out. I think there is a demonisation of a community going on here and I often find the media is complicit in that."

www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/election-2019-50711195

well they are more likely to be violent than women

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 09/12/2019 17:40

I hate blood sports... so should I watch?

I cackled loudly at the radio 4 piece this morning. She must have been on the gin by 11am...

clitherow · 09/12/2019 17:45

Joanne / Edward Latham, a violent male who identifies as a trans woman, aka Edward Adam Brown was convicted in 2001 of attempting to murder a female friend, Sarah Smith, and sentenced to life in prison. Latham was then given another life sentence in 2007 after trying to kill another prisoner at HMP Frankland in County Durham. Then in July 2011, while at Rampton secure psychiatric hospital, Latham tried to kill another patient by stabbing him in the neck and consequently received another life sentence.

While housed in the close supervision centre (CSC) of HMP Woodhill in summer 2015 (a unit reserved for the most dangerous and/or vulnerable men in the prison system) Latham reportedly began identifying as a woman named Joanne. Prisoners held in the CSC system have usually committed further serious violent offences while in prison and exhibit dangerous and disruptive behaviour that is too difficult to manage in an ordinary prison location. In October 2015, five officers had to be present to unlock Latham’s cell due to previous threats made against staff. As there is no necessity for a CSC system for women in the UK, Latham would not have been eligible for transfer to the women’s estate, nor was any request submitted. The prisoner had a long history of self harm, violence and making threats against prison staff if demands were not met. Staff assessed that there was a risk that Latham might attack someone at any time, with the intention of killing them or causing serious harm.

Is she serious?

LemonGingerCakes · 09/12/2019 17:47

Is it possible to listen to the whole thing somewhere?

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 09/12/2019 17:47

Didn’t they commit suicide?

Michelleoftheresistance · 09/12/2019 17:49

We saw with the tragic deaths of Vikki Thompson and Joanne Latham in 2015 the impact of forcing trans women to serve their sentences in male prisons.

And everyone with a brain saw the tragic multiple rape of the female that Karen White attacked having identified onto a female psychiatric ward to access her, and then the tragic sexual assaults of the additional females White was then given access to in a female prison while awaiting trial for those rapes. Those women's lives will never be the same because of White having been given access to them in situations they could not escape from. This is the impact of forcing female people to serve sentences in mixed sex prisons with biological males a number of whom are known sex offenders ffs .

Third spaces, Swinson. Think about it. You can respect the choice of male people to identify however they want, respect their feelings, respect their identities. Do not confuse this with removing fundamental human rights from people unlucky enough to be born with female biology while you hold some form of power.

If you seriously believe that validating male people's freedom of choice and access at any cost to females is the only acceptable solution here, then you should not be anywhere near a position of public office.

Floisme · 09/12/2019 17:49

Anyone know who Swinson's advisers are? Someone has got to be feeding her this stuff.

clitherow · 09/12/2019 17:49

yes but she says that this could have been avoided had Latham been housed in a women's prison.

ItsChristmaaaaaaaaas · 09/12/2019 17:51

There are some pretty heavy LGBTetc groups set up within organisations (to be honest I get the chills when I hear a company has one) and its who is advising and empowering them that is the million $ question (possibly literally).

SarahTancredi · 09/12/2019 17:51

So again women are to blame for suicide now. Even when they were no where near them, knowing they had a different prison that they couldn't access made them commit suicide?

Do what I want or I'll kill myself?

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 09/12/2019 17:52

"Do you agree with your candidate Phillip Lee that transgender prisoners should be held in segregated facilities?

In fairness I don't think trans identifying prisoners should be segregated either. I think they should be held in the appropriate prison for their sex, as determined at conception and observed at birth, just like anybody else.

If they happen to be vulnerable as well as trans identifying they can be held in the vulnerable prisoners section of the appropriate prison for their sex, as determined at conception and observed at birth, just like any other vulnerable prisoner would be.

Of course most prisoners who identify as trans aren't particularly vulnerable compared to the rest of the prison population but that's by the by.

Floisme · 09/12/2019 17:59

Answering my own question and assuming this is still accurate (August 2019) Swinson's team is discussed here:
www.libdemvoice.org/lib-dem-brexit-campaign-chief-to-be-jo-swinsons-chief-of-staff-61777.html

Names include: Rhiannon Leaman - Chief of Staff
Sara Mosavi - Head of Office, leading 'on things like policy development'
Ben Rathe - Press secretary.

I'm guessing that these are the people briefing Swinson. Anyone know anything about them?

Hell I miss R0wan

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 09/12/2019 18:14

I wonder if Jo Swinson knows anything at all about Joanne Latham other than that they were transgender and killed themselves.

I am absolutely cringing for her. So embarrassing.
