Thread 2!

OP posts:
CriticalCondition · 20/11/2019 14:20

if it is hidden by enough active members, then maybe the post gets flagged for review

But that is open to abuse by people who can maintain 'active' accounts for this purpose (by for example posting utterly innocuous things on unrelated boards)and contrary to freedom of speech.

We don't know what the criteria are but at least at the moment the mods appear to have a discretion, whether we think that is being exercised fairly or not. A system of X hides leads to review/deletion gives a power to the bullies and it will be abused..

As the judge said in the FairCop proceedings this morning, freedom of speech protects the right to be told things we do not wish to hear.

A hide function isn't good enough for some people. It's not that they can't bear to hear it. It's that they don't want others to.

Exactly.

No one has to read these boards.

CriticalCondition · 20/11/2019 14:46

Blimey.

The FairCop proceedings just referred to 'The Heckler's Veto'.
The suppression of speech by a (governing) body because of the anticipated or actual reaction of hecklers.

That's exactly what the disrupters have in FWR, isn't it?

You have telephoned someone, visited them... on the basis of a policy that has no force in law
Def Counsel
Judge - just give me an answer.

chilling19 · 20/11/2019 14:50

Ouch!

CaveMum · 20/11/2019 14:51

Just seen on Twitter that WildWoman (who tweeted from the ET on Monday morning) has had her account suspended for 12 hours.

Now I wonder who could have reported her 🤔

PurpleHoodie · 20/11/2019 14:56

Judge "Just give me an answer"

Ohhhhhh.

chilling19 · 20/11/2019 14:59

Sorry all, wrong thread, I thought I was on the fair cop one

PurpleHoodie · 20/11/2019 15:29

Me also

nauticant · 20/11/2019 15:37

blog.twitter.com/en_us/topics/company/2018/Setting-the-record-straight-on-shadow-banning.html

we certainly don’t shadow ban based on political viewpoints or ideology

BeardedVulture · 20/11/2019 15:52

Maybe it's time for MN to have a like system, and if you don't like a comment you can downvote/hide it. If you can hide it, then it defeats the need to be reading threads looking for things to report, and if it is hidden by enough active members, then maybe the post gets flagged for review??

Things Mumsnet forums could be doing with, that many, many other forums already have, including free to set up ones:

  1. A like/reaction system- although I don't necessarily think it should have an impact on how the threads and posts are displayed to users as downvotes/ dislikes could potentially be gamed by AWAs.

  2. A way to quote posters in your reply.

  3. A way to hide spoilers/ compress big walls of text.

For starters.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 20/11/2019 16:01

Judge noting that Counsel is unable to define a “hate incident”.

.......Maybe it means different things in each of our different realities....

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 20/11/2019 16:03

oops wrong thread, sorry

HandsOffMyRights · 20/11/2019 17:14

The last time I was on a locked thread OrchidInTheSun was banned.

She used the words "poor you" on a thread posted by a child pretending to be an adult.

It's good to see this reinstated, with no perma bans issued (hopefully) but I too want to see TheBewildnerness and Orchid back.

BlackeyedSusan · 20/11/2019 17:40

I miss the bewilderness and a few others.

cordeliavorkosigan · 20/11/2019 17:59

is there any news on the case? (I'm guessing not, based on the lack of updates..)

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 20/11/2019 18:14

Maryz. I miss Maryz. And orchid and the Uterati.

xxyzz · 20/11/2019 18:21

Maryz? She got banned?

That's a loss. What an earth for?

No, I can guess.

AnotherLass · 20/11/2019 18:27

We've got quite a lot off topic, but since other people are talking about it, I'm going to say that I really appreciate Mumsnet NOT having a "like" button. I think "like" buttons degrade conversations as people end up just playing to the gallery for popularity points. It is one of the reasons why I think the quality of conversation on here has sometimes been higher than elsewhere.

nauticant · 20/11/2019 18:32

I'm with AnotherLass. "Like buttons" would end up being another aspect of MN to game and would be gamed most effectively by obsessives.

The strength of MN is the discussions in which ideas can be challenged. Which is also the weakness of the trans activists. Let's keep the focus on the words.

PurpleHoodie · 20/11/2019 18:37

What nauticant said.

midcenturylegs · 20/11/2019 18:38

@anotherlass I just felt the need to want to like your comment! I think you're right, the "like" culture is what is causing so much grief and anguish with younger generations. MN is a good place where we can reply to opinions with opinions constructed via logic and intellect (not always obvs but it's far better than a Dislike and "Ok Boomer").

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 20/11/2019 18:41

Maryz went in a big hoohah about something on FWR. What was it? Was it a live chat?

definitelygc · 20/11/2019 19:10

100% agree about the like button. After I got Terfblocked and trolled on Twitter I joined a GC subreddit. Not sure if others have the same experience but I found people there just say whatever they know will get upvotes and if you disagree you get downvoted to oblivion.
