Another rough sex defence

I'm really at a loss to comprehend what has happened to the jury here, I'm speechless. Juries no longer serve justice.

Why doesn't mumsnet raise this with some clever law firm or a politician who wants to win women voters?

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 10/11/2019 08:22

As I see it, this extreme form of "kink", if that's what you want to call it, is hugely problematic whatever the circumstances. If the man willingly engages in it and enjoys it, and his experience of sex is enhanced by hurting his partner and putting her in a potentially life-threatening position, he is dangerous and shouldn't be out in society. I don't care if he thinks it's what she wants, or even if it is what she wants - if you enjoy inflicting pain there's something wrong with you.

And if a man claims to be going along with this sort of thing for her sake but he doesn't enjoy doing it, then he's being pressured into sexual practices that he doesn't want to do, and that's also not ok. He should obviously say "No, that's not my thing" if asked. Why don't they, though?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 10/11/2019 10:49
Angry

So was running out in the street (I think naked) asking strangers for help also part of this sex game

Wtf is wrong with people why was the jury so bias

Sex games are consensual between adults with boundaries it’s a game not an excuse to abuse the other person because you want yo harm them

Italiangreyhound · 10/11/2019 11:08

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper 100% agree.

Generally, men in sexual relationships with women, don't seem to be pressurised into doing things they don't want to sexually.

Italiangreyhound · 10/11/2019 11:10

Is this being investigated, is there a petition or pressure group that so-called sex games are no excuse for murder?

BarbaraStrozzi · 10/11/2019 11:45

Eoin you hit the nail on the head.

So much of this discussion gets diverted into "some women like being submissive".

Not nearly enough attention gets paid to "what sort of man gets off on inflicting pain on their partner?" (Answer - one who is at best not a nice man and at worst highly dangerous, possibly lethal.)

It's exactly the same rhetorical trick you see played with "sex possie" discussions of prostitution. They always frame it as "but some women love it and earn big bucks from it" and continually deflect attention away from the men involved.

This is one instance where we should be asking "What about the men?" every single time, because the answer is invariably highly illuminating (and not in a nice way).

FannyCann · 12/11/2019 04:44

So fucking sick of these men defending the "accidental" murder of women. How is it men never die in these rough sex games?

YES Italian

We made wecantconsenttothis.uk/

And we've got a clarification of the law which Harriet Harman and Mark Garnier (Natalie Connolly's family's MP) have proposed. This was attached to the Domestic Abuse bill and now we are having a general election that bill "falls away". We need election candidates to commit to bring the bill back, and the amendments to end rough sex defences. Please ask your local candidates to commit to doing this

We've got details here: wecantconsenttothis.uk/actnow

Here is part of the amendment:
Notices of Amendments: 7 October 2019

Domestic Abuse Bill, continued
“No defence for consent
(1) If, in the course of any behaviour which constitutes domestic abuse within the meaning of this Act, a person (“A”) wounds or assaults another person (“B”) causing actual bodily harm, more serious injury or death, it is not a defence to a prosecution that B consented to the infliction of injury.
(2) Subsection (1) applies whether or not the actual bodily harm, more serious injury or death occurred in the course of a sadomasochistic encounter.”

And any domestic homicides which are being considered for lesser charges (like manslaughter) need to be referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Hear Harriet Harman talk about ending these defences
See the proposed law amendments
all you need to ask political candidates to support this wecantconsenttothis.uk/actnow

Italiangreyhound · 12/11/2019 21:06

Thank you WomanDaresTo.

FannyCann · 12/11/2019 21:47

@WomanDaresTo
That looks fairly watertight to a non lawyer. If the bill can be resurrected in the new parliament.

Is it enough though? I would like to see a specific crime of strangulation/choking similar to what has been brought in in New Zealand. This is needed to get the message across that it is a dangerous, harmful, abusive practice which will not be tolerated. Consenting adults? Fine but if it goes too far, if the victim (probably but not necessarily female) feels it went beyond "fun" and complains, if it goes wrong expect a prosecution.

FannyCann · 12/11/2019 21:49

Also thank you WomanDaresTo , you have made a massive contribution to raising awareness and pushing for this bill. Thanks

WomanDaresTo · 13/11/2019 09:52

Btw the partner of Natalie Connolly, who left Natalie to die at their home with internal and beating injuries he claimed were due to "rough sex", is appealing his short sentence of 3 years 8 months.

Appeal begins tomorrow.

Flowers FannyCann

Italiangreyhound · 14/11/2019 02:04

WomanDaresTo is there any chance they could increase his sentence.

What an evil piece of shit! I really hope they can increase it.

"The former solicitor general and ex-acting Labour leader said at the time: “Bearing in mind she died of violent injuries inflicted on her by him it’s hard to see how the sentence wasn’t even four years.2

NOT MUCH for a woman's life, is it. Angry Sad

Powergower · 19/11/2019 09:50

This is soul destroying. I am saddened that grace's family have to hear her privacy being ripped apart so the defence can prove she somehow consented to being killed. Horrified. We have to do something, we need to protect our daughters and the next gen of women.

Justhadathought · 19/11/2019 10:13

This sounds like some sort of defence of 'sex games' between consensual adults?

Thing is isn't part of the thrill and the experimentation to push boundaries, and to go ever further? Otherwise wouldn't it all be come a little predictable and staid and vanilla, wouldn't it.

That is certainly what happens to women caught up in pornography. Their boundaries and rules are eroded and diminished.

artisanparsnips · 19/11/2019 17:30

Have you see this graphic which has just come up on twitter

Another rough sex defence
SirVixofVixHall · 19/11/2019 19:00

I will have a look for that.
These men are literally getting away with murder.
There is also this case. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-50474374

He has just been cleared, even though she told people she thought he would kill her, told her friend he had burnt her with the oil, and he left her burnt and didn’t call for an ambulance. Her friend called one when she arrived which took some time.

FannyCann · 19/11/2019 20:01

Driving to work this morning with DD 19, the newsreader on the radio cheerfully and uncritically reported about Grace and the "consensual" "sex game" "gone wrong". So fucking angry. At least it was an excuse to give the daughter the benefit of another rant. ConfusedAngry

FannyCann · 19/11/2019 22:45

ANOTHER ONE

Poor chap was feeling depressed because he wasn't getting enough attention and she was a bit moody after returning from three months in Afghanistan.

But she survived (and is still with him) so that's all OK then.

RAF man who admitted strangling his partner is CLEARED

m0therofdragons · 19/11/2019 22:49

I can't understand how they have legally been able to name her!

Aloe6 · 20/11/2019 13:20

I was so sad to hear that intimate details of Grace’s life are now being thrashed out in court. How the defence can sleep at night I have no idea.

FannyCann · 20/11/2019 19:35

It's sickening Aloe6
Suspect the bastard will get off.

SydneyCarton · 20/11/2019 19:47

If all this consensual rough sex is so widespread and commonplace how come it’s only women with male sexual partners who end up dying as a result? Where are all the lesbian women standing trial for murdering their wives or girlfriends and claiming it was a sex game gone wrong? If it’s so easily done “by accident Hmm” with just a bit too much pressure a woman could end up strangling a partner just as easily as a man could. Absolute bollocks
