I stand with Allison Bailey

It increasingly feels like we should treat witch hunts against individual women as attacks on women as a class.

I thought women here might appreciate a thread to show their support for Allison. I don't know her personally, but I believe in all women's right to free speech.

I stand with Alison.

One of the founder member of TELI. Quite astounding that she has left that up there after flash/wankgate. Jess was one of the speakers at the TELI launch at GCC as was Susie Green. Allison has had a hell of a battle if this is what she has been surrounded by.

Needmoresleep · 29/10/2019 15:59

A mini history, based simply on my memory of R0wans links:

A lead figure on the legal side has been Stephen Whittle, a FtoM law Professor at Manchester Met.

www.lawsociety.org.uk/policy-campaigns/documents/stephen-whittle-bio-june-2015/

Note “He qualified in law in 1990, having decided things would only change if trans people became expert in the law and its inadequacies. ”

Much of the international framework for gender rights came from a meeting in Indonesia in 2006 led to a set of principles that Whittle and others have wanted to see adopted in Britain and elsewhere.

Ahhh, and here is the R0wan thread

Pota2 · 29/10/2019 16:14

Thanks Needmoresleep. It’s quite sinister how much influence and power these people are.

Needmoresleep · 29/10/2019 16:36

The really extraordinary one was someone’s record of a behind-closed-door conference planning tactics from perhaps 18 months ago, with many of the same characters. That’s all a bit too vague for a search, so I am hoping someone else remembers it and can link.

Organisational capture does not happen by accident. One day there will be a great book to be written about how it all happened. The useful fools are out there on Twitter, but the important stuff is happening behind closed doors, in LGBT/diversity/equalities civil service, law, academic etc groups. Daylight, debate and scrutiny are the remedies.

Presumably why the idea of a homosexual only group is so opposed and why brave people like Allison are in the firing line

OldCrone · 29/10/2019 16:41

The Yogyakarta Principles are now referred to as 'International Best Practice' by many organisations and governments. This is what the Scottish Government said in their GRA consultation document last year:

3.10. The view of the Scottish Government is that the 2004 Act requirements are unnecessarily intrusive and do not reflect the best practice now embodied in the Yogyakarta Principles and Resolution 2048.

littlbrowndog · 29/10/2019 17:27

Yes needmoresleep

It would make a book about how this happened and people didn’t know

Behind closed doors

Pota2 · 29/10/2019 17:28

Wow- gobsmacked by that thread. Bloody hell. Fae is also part of TELI.

Needmoresleep · 29/10/2019 17:41

Worth noting that MN threads on this board disappear after 1000 days

(I don't know if that this is explicitly stated in the rules. However the message came up when I tried to search something over three years old. )

Some of this is very important, and should be archived. Simple Google searches with key words like "Mumsnet+TELI" or "mumsnet+Whittle" brought up a wealth of material, and joined a lot of dots. All of this did not happen without planning. I am not tech-savvy. Is anyone else? Who might host...other than that site that shall not be named (KF)?

The oldest page of threads on FWR is from 2010.

hipsterfun · 29/10/2019 18:28

A few months ago, R0wan and I noticed some threads we had in ‘Watching’ had lost their posts. HQ told me it was a technical glitch during some housekeeping. We can’t rely on MN as an archive - take screenshots and make PDFs.

Needmoresleep · 29/10/2019 19:11

Yes. Pretty sure message said that thread I wanted had gone as it was over 1000 days old. Might just be an oddity, but it’s clear that some threads, (and posters) still seem to vanish. Glad though to see that it is not universal. The linkages outlined above only start to suggest the pressure MN must have been under with big legal names like Linklaters in the mix.

The LGB alliance and breaking Stonewall and allies grip on our institutions is really important.

crosstalk · 29/10/2019 20:45

Sent tonight.

MangoSplit · 30/10/2019 06:52

Card posted, email sent.

BreakWindandFire · 30/10/2019 11:19

Glad to see that the petition to sack the, ummm self-employed Allison, has risen from the initial 17 to a magnificent 20 signatures.

However, while Garden Court responded instantly and publicly to a complaint about her, they don't appear to have said anything since. I hope that she is being treated well at Chambers, but I suspect not.

SingingLily · 30/10/2019 11:23

Well, it's 15% I suppose, even though what they are demanding is actually impossible.

Let's hope by bumping this thread, Allison will receive 15% more cards of support than she has so far. At least.

I hope Royal Mail has had to hire a couple more staff.

Score!

Literally.

ArcheryAnnie · 30/10/2019 11:47

Very late to this thread, but yup, I'm another one who thinks Allison Bailey is a fucking hero.

I wonder what exactly is it about an extremely clever and accomplished Black women whose day job is, er, defending human rights, that makes a certain type of man feel amazingly threatened and upset? Can't imagine.

HumberHellraiser · 30/10/2019 12:04

That ‘we are still here’ conference thread is so important. Can someone get a pdf or copy it in some way?

FilthyBiscuit · 30/10/2019 13:25

Card being sent today. I would love to know how many she's received.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 30/10/2019 18:29

Finally got my card in the post tonight. She should get it Fri, I hope.

Fingers crossed it makes a difference for her.

RosaFreedman1983 · 30/10/2019 18:56

I don't post here often, but wanted to say that it is so lovely that women take the time and go to the effort to send cards and letters. From my experience those acts of solidarity made me feel far less alone, and have meant an awful lot at times of feeling throughly fed up. I imagine (hope) the same is true for the many other women who have received those cards and letters in their pigeonholes at work. (Now back to quietly reading threads and learning lots from you MNs.)

BingBongSong · 30/10/2019 21:27

Card sent to a Allison this morning. I hope she is OK.

teawamutu · 30/10/2019 21:34

Lovely to see you here, Rosa - at the risk of sounding starstruck you're another hero of mine.

Great to hear cards and letters make a difference; I do also love the idea of a resistance movement that works with nice cards and polite letters Smile

ScrimshawTheSecond · 30/10/2019 22:27

It's quite nice that if you google Allison Bailey, the third result is this thread - the title 'I stand with Allison Bailey'. Smile
