Upfield (manufacturers of Flora marg, and Proactiv) don't want Mumsnet to buy their products any more

They've made the decision to 'no longer work with Mumsnet' because they want to 'treat everyone equally' because of their 'values'.

By this I'm sure they mean any woman who uses this site should definitely NOT buy their products. That would be an unpleasant association between mumsnet and their values that would be too much to bear.

Here is a helpful list of their products that they don't want in any way associated with Mumsnet:

Country rock
Flora
Rama
BlueBand
Lätta
Flora Proactiv
Becel
I can't believe it's not butter

Please don't sully their brands with any association from you, you horrid mumsnetters. Your money is tainted with unacceptable values.

They have posted guidelines, they delete posts (and err on the side of caution doing this). What else exactly should they do? Do spell it out, Upfield.

Yes. It's difficult to see how this board could be more stringently moderated than it is. We're not even allowed to use sex based pronouns (which are rooted in biological reality) even if they're how we see the world and our honest opinion. Any truly hateful posts are usually very quickly deleted, to the point that it's annoying because you never know what was said.

They clearly have done absolutely no research on Mumsnet at all. They've just listened to someone who actually really harassed an actual transperson to the point of taking them to court where the case was summarily dismissed as rubbish.

THIS.

Honestly! They look absolutely insane.

I mentioned this to them in the 'positive feedback' I gave them this morning via their Contact form, and I explained why I wouldn't be using Stork any more for my baking.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 14/10/2019 17:31

Did they get back you you? Offer you 50p off voucher or something? I feel sorry for the staff who will be mopping up this mess.

youllhavehadyourtea · 14/10/2019 17:34

They will reply with 2 days it said.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 14/10/2019 17:34

Oh dear oh dear. Uganda. Oh dear.

This is looking significantly less brave and stunning.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 14/10/2019 17:35

It’s just flag waving nonsense. It really is. They should hand their heads (not only in Uganda).

Juells · 14/10/2019 17:38

It's as if they were searching for something to make them look on-trend and woke and young. And decided that nobody cared about a bunch of silly women, and they'd do as the sacrifice.

Pandaintheporridge · 14/10/2019 17:46

I've just looked again at my "vegan-but-not-dairy-free" spread and it actually has more calories in it than my lurpak lighter so I'm even less sorry not to be buying it again.
Just think though, if this hadn't happened it would not have occurred to me to go over my Flora tub with a fine-toothed comb to find these things out.

Catmaiden · 14/10/2019 17:55

How can you have " vegan but not dairy free" spread? That's literal lies!

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 18:00

Was about to ask that.

Pandaintheporridge · 14/10/2019 18:03

It has a little "vegan" logo on it. And then in the ingredient info says it isn't guaranteed dairy free and you should buy xx (another flora product) if you want that!
It's nuts. I bought it to make a vegan cake - I thought the vegan logo meant it was fine for that Confused

Dyrne · 14/10/2019 18:04

Catmaiden honestly dear, we covered this a few pages back - do try to keep up or you’ll be uncovered as the Spreadphobic bigot you are.

Flora identifies as Vegan; which is Clearly enough. Those that have a dairy allergy are clearly bigots too for requiring them to disclose their pre-transition status of “Clearly something to fucking to with dairy...”

So it's for people who want to appear to be vegan but aren't really?

I'm beginning to have some serious questions about this company's commitment to the concept of reality in general.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 14/10/2019 18:11

Ohhh @citykat that certainly clears up nothing. Ask them about their ‘investigation’, what they know about the complainant, and when they are withdrawing from Uganda...

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 18:14

So, "misgendering" people on a web forum - bad, very bad, so bad you couldn't possibly sully your pristine corporate hands by association with any site that might allow that to slip through the cracks before deleting it.

Associating with countries that execute gay people, otoh, all good, totally in keeping with your corporate values (as long as nobody notices, and they definitely won't, right?)

Dyrne · 14/10/2019 18:14

I seriously can’t believe they think women will be fobbed off with that ridiculously vague, wispy washy, copy and pasted response.

I’m going to contact them now and ask how their base in Uganda ties in with their love of all things “human rights”. Also why their love of moderation only seems to extend to a female majority forum as opposed to Twitter or Facebook.

HumberElla · 14/10/2019 18:19

Well, that’s not the same (lawyer approved) sentence copied and pasted twice at all, is it?

VictoriaSpongeAndTea · 14/10/2019 18:28

Their base in Uganda is going to be little more than 1 marketing manager trying to get their frankenspreads into local supermarkets.

What's is more of interest is their owner and what else they own. I know someone mentioned trainline above. Up fields is owned by KRR who own serious amounts of companies including lots of smaller tech companies, real estate, hospital in China etc.

The one that caught my eye was Sonos, my OH is a Sonos fan, just bought another two speakers that turn out not to be compatible with some other device he'd checked they were compatible with. He wondered whether to return them but he has a work around so decided not too. About to let him know they are going back after all as still within the time period he could (and they don't behave exactly as described anyway) and oh's going to have to find another provider of overpriced speakers

EverardDigby · 14/10/2019 18:37

I of course eat butter from grass-fed cows, but DD prefers margarine. I did try and get her adopted but social services said that preferring plastic-spread to butter wasn't a valid reason, so this is what I bought for her instead of Flora.

EverardDigby · 14/10/2019 18:39

I should also say Clover is nicer than plastic-spread and doesn't contain artificial ingredients!

TiredofthisBS · 14/10/2019 18:59

Thanks for posting the reply you got @citykat . They really are arseholes aren't they? How dare they think they have a say in the way women think. Why don't they get off Twitter if they are so holier than thou - you know with the MAP's and everything or maybe kiwi farms but know they target a forum primarily aimed at women. If you are reading this Upfields - your misogyny is showing.

Needmoresleep · 14/10/2019 19:08

VictoriaSpong Sonos speakers are a bit like Dyson vacuum cleaners, they need a lot of on-going attention. The work around may work now, but the software is continually updating. I changed modem (or rather Virgin changed it for me and Sonos could find one speaker, but not the other. I waited a few months, and several updates later and spent a couple of hours scratching my head, resetting the modem, kicking the cat etc. Now it works on the one that was not working before but not on the other.

Serves me right for desiring an overpriced speaker. Bose next time.

Another plug for Raileasy Trainsplit over Trainline. Often much cheaper.
