Upfield (manufacturers of Flora marg, and Proactiv) don't want Mumsnet to buy their products any more

Barracker · 11/10/2019 14:48

They've made the decision to 'no longer work with Mumsnet' because they want to 'treat everyone equally' because of their 'values'.

By this I'm sure they mean any woman who uses this site should definitely NOT buy their products. That would be an unpleasant association between mumsnet and their values that would be too much to bear.

Here is a helpful list of their products that they don't want in any way associated with Mumsnet:

Country rock
Flora
Rama
BlueBand
Lätta
Flora Proactiv
Becel
I can't believe it's not butter

Please don't sully their brands with any association from you, you horrid mumsnetters. Your money is tainted with unacceptable values.

That's my flora in the bin then. Never again in my shopping trolley

SarahTancredi · 13/10/2019 12:58

Morrisons have sold out of president salted butter. Thanks guys Hmm Grin

GirlDownUnder · 13/10/2019 13:04

TinselAngel I have read similar, and I have read some suboptimal threads about ‘trans widows on MN’ that is just guttersniping.

And every time I read those base comments, I think a little less of the person spewing and a lot more of you, and your threads.

Your stories must shame them, for their only reaction to be to lash out. I’ve not yet seen any decent counter argument.

As ever Flowers

GetbusywiththeFizzee · 13/10/2019 13:14

Don’t use Flora but will actively avoid all Upfield products in future and spread the word of their attempt to silence women to cake bakers I know.

Datun · 13/10/2019 13:21

Last night, Mumsnet founder Justine Roberts accused the brand of bowing to pressure from 'a handful of activists on Twitter'.

She added: 'Mumsnet has turned down hundreds of thousands of pounds of advertising over the years from companies which we feel don't make parents' lives easier, so we're well used to putting purpose before profit. I do think in the end consumers will value companies which show a bit of backbone.'

^ I think this statement is reassuring, tinsel? 💐

LangCleg · 13/10/2019 13:26

Is the liberal/conservative confusion due to the fact that liberal has become confused with libertarian, which in turn seems to mean whatever men want they should have. So surrogacy, legalisation of sex work, access to women's spaces, queering of the classroom etc.

Yes. But let's not also forget that the "progressive left" - aka the posh people - has always had an aspect of improving the feral poor about it. Eugenics started as a "progressive" enterprise before national socialism went anywhere near it.

Needmoresleep · 13/10/2019 13:41

Thanks Lang. My academic background is economics/accountancy and so, until now, feminist theory had passed me by, so I am slowly trying to figure it all out. .

MN is an education.

MN has equally educated me about the concerns of people with different lives and challenges. Money, relationships, fostering, elderly parents are a few of the many boards which highlight struggles women face in their day to day lives. Some of the courage and generosity is humbling. MN is not a middle class bubble. The opposite. Though many posters may be middle class, open and respectful debate on this site allows us to challenge our own views and assumptions. Even on this thread there will be people from all sorts of backgrounds, living in all sorts of places, and with plenty of different political views. What we have in common is that we care about women. 10 million unique users. That is huge.

What is is it about margarine manufacturers, that they dismiss us so readily?

Ereshkigal · 13/10/2019 13:53

A prominent person in the GC debate said to me elsewhere yesterday, that they had heard it might be hatred of the trans widows thread by the TRA's that had caused the targeting of Flora.

I think this is a possibility. MN has always dealt with those support threads (dealing in many cases with emotional abuse and coercive control) sensitively and disallowed trolling and TRA plopping.

TheGoddessFrigg · 13/10/2019 14:28

Real TERFS' eat Lurpak 😁😁😁😁😁. It can be our secret signal to each other as we go round the supermarket....

Coldwatershock · 13/10/2019 14:49

Ah yes Tinsel. I bet the aggressive TAs hate the Transwidows threads because those women have first-hand experience of late transitioners' appalling, selfish behaviour and crap parenting... Nothing to do with prejudice, just lived experience. And the terrible nuisance of those women also opting to self-define, which should just not be allowed Grin. It is to the credit if MN and the contributors that it's so widely-read, and regarded as important and influential, by TRAs...

RiotAndAlarum · 13/10/2019 14:55

That's exactly how I feel, @Needmoresleep!

clitherow · 13/10/2019 15:06

What is is it about margarine manufacturers, that they dismiss us so readily?

But this really is not about margarine!

KKR is a global investment entity that pays 'experts' to look into a metaphorical crystal ball. They will only survive if they predict future trends correctly. These trends are now going so fast that they are going to radically change society and politics even more than we have experienced in the last ten years. AI, automation and genetic engineering are just some of the things that are going to overtake us.

Mothers want to protect the welfare of their children and ensure that they grow up with self-respect and robust mental health. This is not necessarily what the crystal ball gazers are telling their paymasters that they need in a population that is going to have to be managed to accept these changes.

Mothers are a reactionary force that must be overcome. This is in effect war against mothers.

lottiegarbanzo · 13/10/2019 15:15

Interesting about the widows. It is a little reminiscent of the time, about five years ago, that Fathers for Justice took out a newspaper advert urging M&S to stop advertising on MN, because of all the bad women here, helping others to LTB (and to set up appropriately supervised contact, where necessary). They really didn't like the exposure of the everyday realities of life with and without their supporters.

Justine pointed out she'd had plenty of prior experience of dealing with toddler tantrums. M&S took no notice whatsoever. They knew which side their bread was buttered on - so to speak.

PlaceYourItemInTheBaggingArea · 13/10/2019 15:20

New strap-line for ya Upfield if you want it!

'Upfield, the company with more woke points than customers'.

👍

RiotAndAlarum · 13/10/2019 15:21

On the question of whether Upfield staged the fallout with MN (a page or so back), if thxxat is the case, they have it completely backwards. Flora isn't some sort of gateway to veganism or other wokeness. If anything, it's a destination after you've gone through a gateway (or the gateway might be heart disease or dairy allergy).

MrsWednesdayteatime · 13/10/2019 15:24

Can I ask, does clicking on the ads that appear on the fwr board make money for Mumsnet? Are they paid by click or by purchase or does it not work like that at all and the space is just sold separately regardless of clicks?

Coldwatershock · 13/10/2019 15:25

Very good parallel Lottie. Funny how the much-derided 'Mumsnutters' seem to be taken very seriously. You'd think MN would be an irrelevance but clearly not. Men have forever tried to silence those with experience of abusive behaviour... This is nothing new.

wordsmithsforever · 13/10/2019 15:28

Very happy to boycott - just wish I'd bought it more regularly so I could stop buying more often! But noted and won't be buying again Grin

lottiegarbanzo · 13/10/2019 15:35

Yes, fascinating how the internet has allowed marginalised and isolated women to come together and support each other (historic parallel with industrialisation bringing workers into close proximity, so unionisation and democratisation). And how very angry this makes the men who had marginalised and isolated them.

Suddenly, telling uncomfortable domestic truths = hate speak.

The patriarchy orders us to moderate ourselves - or they'll 'moderate' us.

Knewmee · 13/10/2019 15:53

Jesus, I can’t believe this. A margarine company trying to stop women talking about their fears about men in their spaces. A margarine company that thinks it’s ok if women are frightened and humiliated and embarrassed. If we can’t participate safely competitive sports. If we’re assaulted by men in prisons. If we’re forced to undress in front of men.

A butter company that believes women can have penises, and thinks we should shut the fuck up if we say they don’t? That wants to stop women talking about their rights, their fears, and who they are?

Well, I’m an old fashioned woman, that is, one with an all natural vagina I grew myself, and pushed kids out of, and those kids aren’t getting any Upfield products on their plates. Ever again. I’d be ashamed to put one of their products in my trolley.

Seriously, a margarine company that thinks women aren’t allowed to speak? How can any wonan ever buy their products again? Don’t fund misogyny. Don’t fund Upfield. Run from these misogynist fuckwits.

.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/10/2019 15:56

I chat to people in the supermarket. Quite often (hey I’m Scottish). This should make for some interesting exchanges in the spread aisle.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/10/2019 15:57

‘Don’t fund misogyny‘ I like that. It should be a website.

HoneyandSpice · 13/10/2019 16:07

I did a recent product test on here for Flora.
It was shit. As is their attitude. So they can fuck off. Not that I would have bought any of their other crap, but good to know they don't want my business.

RandomUsernameHere · 13/10/2019 16:48

Completely agree. I don't buy any of their stuff anyway because I think it's gross, but definitely wouldn't consider it now even if I liked their products.
