Upfield (manufacturers of Flora marg, and Proactiv) don't want Mumsnet to buy their products any more

They've made the decision to 'no longer work with Mumsnet' because they want to 'treat everyone equally' because of their 'values'.

By this I'm sure they mean any woman who uses this site should definitely NOT buy their products. That would be an unpleasant association between mumsnet and their values that would be too much to bear.

Here is a helpful list of their products that they don't want in any way associated with Mumsnet:

Country rock
Flora
Rama
BlueBand
Lätta
Flora Proactiv
Becel
I can't believe it's not butter

Please don't sully their brands with any association from you, you horrid mumsnetters. Your money is tainted with unacceptable values.

Does it have a vegan society logo or something (I don’t know if there is one but as a veggie I look for the VS logo)?

Vegan (maybe) is just shit really. Maybe they should be looking at this rather than mumsnet. I’m sure this will be news to many pissed off vegans who have been taking it on faith. What if you have a dairy allergy?

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 13/10/2019 11:01

So Flora only identifies as vegan? Oh dear Upfield, it’s all coming out now

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/10/2019 11:03

See we just wouldn’t have known that until all this came out. Well well well. Some people are useful after all. Thanks 😘

LadyCarolinePooterVonThigh · 13/10/2019 11:03

Sadly I can't eat butter these days. I mostly use olive oil instead, but for a vaguely buttery spread Biona is not bad.

It is organic, dairy free and vegan.

Ingredients: Sunflower oil 50%, sustainable organic palm oil, coconut oil, water, carrot juice. Emulsifier is organic soya lecithin, organic lemon
juice.

It is VERY expensive, 500g is £4.39 at my health food shop, but a pack lasts me weeks.

OrchidInTheSun · 13/10/2019 11:04

@Rocktheboot - there was a billboard that said Adult Human Female on it paid for by Standing for Women. The billboard was owned by Primesight who were inundated with complaints because that is obviously Dreadfully Offensive and they took it down. Ocado said they backed Primesight's action because they support everyone.

Lots of us wrote to them and cancelled our accounts.

LadyCarolinePooterVonThigh · 13/10/2019 11:04

Oops of course the sunflower oil is organic too!

Fraggling · 13/10/2019 11:05

Wow at Mail article.

They are biggest newspaper in uk I believe. And not the choice generally of crazed feminists (I count myself as one).

And yet. Article presents women including prominent old school feminists as totally reasonable.

Love it.

I agree that there's something funny going on. With ocado I got a personal phone call to talk about it all. They cocked up, didn't want to back track, so rang all the customers who cancelled.

Flora just says, fuck you.

I assume they sell to feminine people because they are the ones at home with the families who do the food shopping etc etc. Because they like it. Not women of cunty type who end up with all the shitwork for a variety of reasons.

violettrose28 · 13/10/2019 11:08

this is why activists like Posie P, Linda Bellos, Venice, Julie Bindel are important. The reason that businesses like Flora do things like this (remove advertising) is because the full on aggressive activism from a minority of screeching posters on Twitter, has them running scared. For the most part, gender critical feminists are restrained and reasonable. Companies like this choose the path of least resistance. It's easier to pacify the LOUD minorities even if it shits on the idea of free speech.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 13/10/2019 11:16

Really glad the Mail highlighted Helen / mimmmmmmymummmy's role in that disgusting prosecution of Miranda.

(Waves at the monitors)

misscockerspaniel · 13/10/2019 11:40

So Flora only identifies as vegan? Grin Grin Grin

[May I point out to those interested (and following on from the boycott of Ocado) that Waitrose has opened its Christmas delivery/collection slots.]

lottiegarbanzo · 13/10/2019 11:48

I find the politics of this so interesting - feminists, continuing the fight for sex-based policy and protections, as a counter to persistent, rampant societal sexism, being portrayed as 'conservatives' and as part of the 'it's PC gone mad' brigade, rather than, as has for so long been the case, the people it derides. A curious sort of mainstreaming of feminist values, where they coincide with a desire for free speech.

More than that, I think it does demonstrate that the sort of sex-based protections that were controversial fifty years ago just aren't any more and are entirely mainstream and taken for granted.

Fascinating quote from Upfield there though; 'We feel more could be done to moderate online discussion and tackle discriminatory posts'.

Not on Twitter, or male-dominated platforms no but, on Mumsnet.

'Women, be more moderate!'

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 13/10/2019 11:48

Because I was reading this thread earlier, when I went to the supermarket I bought two kinds of butter and something called Naturli an “organic vegan block”. It has a vaguely butter-like taste and a very butter-like consistency; I’m thinking it might be good in baking. It’s made up of shea, coconut, rapeseed and almond.

I’m going to have to eat a lot of toast!

lottiegarbanzo · 13/10/2019 11:51

Or; 'Margarine manufacturer mansplains online moderation to Mumsnet founder.'

youllhavehadyourtea · 13/10/2019 11:53

infact

Or; 'Margarine manufacturer of the Margarine for Men mansplains online moderation to Mumsnet founder.'

lottiegarbanzo · 13/10/2019 11:58

Ha ha, yes! Might I edit out a 'margarine'?

''Margarine for Men' manufacturer mansplains online moderation to Mumsnet founder.'

My alliteration for the day is done.

Nice quote btw @JustineMumsnet

Nappyvalley15 · 13/10/2019 12:02

Typo earlier - meant vegans and woke types

They really should go back to that old slogan now. But now. Go full throttle misogyny.

SarahConnorFem · 13/10/2019 12:15

There is so much wit in this thread. Keep it up ladies! 😂 #gottalaugh

MrsWednesdayteatime · 13/10/2019 12:15

The most bizarre thing is how this all plays out on Twitter, the platform which hosts the accounts of "minor attracted persons" MAPs.

So Upfield's thinking is we can't use Mumsnet to promote Flora as it full of nasty ol' wimens talking about legal sex based rights and text book biology......but it's FINE to make that announcement on Twitter with its MAPs - men who admit being attracted to children.

Women preserving their LEGAL rights = bad, must be shut up
Men perving on children = meh! No harm done, just sweep them under the carpet.

PoweringUp · 13/10/2019 12:17

I genuinely like Flora light and buy it every week but won’t buy it again. Just need to find an alternative now

Fraggling · 13/10/2019 12:21

Well, men are very important. Surely you know that?

MAPS subset =virtuous paedophiles.

Men want cookies for not raping toddlers.
Virtuous ffs.

Like I say. Men are very important.

Needmoresleep · 13/10/2019 12:27

Is the liberal/conservative confusion due to the fact that liberal has become confused with libertarian, which in turn seems to mean whatever men want they should have. So surrogacy, legalisation of sex work, access to women's spaces, queering of the classroom etc.

Women, who want to protect both themselves and their children, are responding in a socially conservative manner. Which does not mean that they are necessarily economically conservative, nor politically conservative. We just want women and children to live in a society where they are safe, nurtured and valued.

All the talk about right wing, or middle class, religion, or race is distraction and patronising. Almost all women whatever their race, class or creed instinctively want to nurture their children.

Thank you MN for providing an anonymous forum where women can, regardless of background, discuss things that concern us.

littlbrowndog · 13/10/2019 12:30

Yep there we got flora using twitter where guys who are attracted to children also use

Cmon flora speak up against twitter

TinselAngel · 13/10/2019 12:47

A prominent person in the GC debate said to me elsewhere yesterday, that they had heard it might be hatred of the trans widows thread by the TRA's that had caused the targeting of Flora.

Slightly bewildered (and also sceptical) that we might be so much impact. Shock

refusetobeasheep · 13/10/2019 12:47

Have used the upfield contact page to inform them of my boycott

GirlDownUnder · 13/10/2019 12:52

I can only assume that TRAs target MN advertisers as a futile attempt to shut us up. MN won’t do it, so go for the revenue streams. And the legal threats.

I know that for at least 2 trans women, who are complaining that there are many dedicated transphobic threads dedicated to them on this platform (there aren’t), there are actual dedicated-to-them threads on KiwiFarms that run to the hundreds in one case, and thousands in the other, posts.

KF don’t have paid advertising, don’t censor, and aren’t cowed by legal threats, so much easier to bully one sub of a sub-forum on a website that is used predominantly by parents or women seeking help to escape abuse.

Much strength to your arm there armchair activists. Go you.
