Online if you want to take it. You translate the drag phrase.
How nice to see that those putting it together didn't think that "fishy" meaning a very feminine drag queen may be offensive....

Does “cheesy” mean a very male
Drag King?

Mac1990 · 03/10/2019 23:18

To me cheesy is unfashionable and cringy. But if you want to use that word to mean a masculine drag king the you do you. It isn't hurting anyone.

Quaffy · 03/10/2019 23:18

There's a big difference between smelling like fish, and being fishy

Yes, but the origin of the use of “fishy” as a descriptor seems to be the supposed smell of vaginas. I am obviously more bothered about climate change and the other things in your post but that doesn’t change the fact this term has its origins in misogyny.

Mac1990 · 03/10/2019 23:18

Then*

Mac1990 · 03/10/2019 23:22

Words change meaning over time, we can't let the origins of words dictate how we use them. We dictate the meaning of words by how we use them - language is adaptive. If we continue to use a word in a negative way then we are re-enforcing those negative connotations and that is our fault.

It is not the fault of people who take that word and give it positive meaning instead. We have the opportunity to embrace the positive meanings. It's up to us to take that opportunity.

Ereshkigal · 03/10/2019 23:23

How has it been given a positive meaning?

Ereshkigal · 03/10/2019 23:24

Fishy meaning vaginas smell of fish is misogyny.

Mac1990 · 03/10/2019 23:24

Being feminine is positive - do you disagree?

I don't agree saying women's genitals smell of fish is not misogyny. I also don't think perceptions of what is female or "feminine" should revolve around what disparaging things men think about female bodies.

Ereshkigal · 03/10/2019 23:31

Can see that going down like a lead balloon TBH.

Pretty sure you'd have the hate crime officer on your doorstep wanting to check your thinking.

Melroses · 03/10/2019 23:31

If feminine is positive, I am not seeing the need for the word 'fishy'.

Mac1990 · 03/10/2019 23:32

I feel like there is a lot of fixation here on the smell of genitals, when it is clear in RPDR that the meaning of fishy has nothing to do with smell.

BertBox · 03/10/2019 23:36

Nothing to do with smell you say? :

BBC Rupaul Drag Quiz
Melroses · 03/10/2019 23:36

So where does it come from then? Are fish feminine? Poisson is masculine.

Ereshkigal · 03/10/2019 23:37

I couldn't care less whether some people think it's "positive" and are happy for it to be used. People think a lot of things about what women should and shouldn't think. As a woman, I find it misogynistic.

Ereshkigal · 03/10/2019 23:38

Why should it be relevant to women whether a group of men are high fiving each other over being called it?

Campervan69 · 03/10/2019 23:40

Yes and as with the word above only black people should be allowed to decide whether or not it is offensive. This word fishy has been used by gay men for generations to be offensive about women's vaginas and so it should solely be for women to decide whether or not what this word is offensive.

Mac1990 · 03/10/2019 23:47

Do you actually think that they sit around high fiving each other over the use of words or was that a metaphor?

So when two women have conflicting views about women who's view is more important? The woman's or the woman's?

Do you find all opinions and views that differ from your own to be misogynistic?

Some fish have beautiful bodies and are agile and graceful creatures. Why can't these be the meanings that are attached to the word fishy and what it means to be fishy, rather than the smell?

Melroses · 03/10/2019 23:55

Actually, some fish are really ugly.

BBC Rupaul Drag Quiz
Ereshkigal · 03/10/2019 23:58

Because, it's about the smell. That's why it was coined. Has nothing to do with the perceived attractiveness of a sardine or a haddock.

thinkfast · 04/10/2019 00:03

I think it's disgusting that such a misogynistic show will be shown on the BBC and disgusting that they are promoting the show on their website with the use of an offensive term.

I will he complaining to the bbc...although we know how well the bbc handles complaints don't we?

testing987654321 · 04/10/2019 00:17

Why are you trying to convince yourself that fishy in drag isn't to do with the supposed smell of women's vaginas?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 04/10/2019 00:35

I think you may be lost, Mac. The HeManWomanHater'sClub is over thattaway.

FWRLurker · 04/10/2019 01:58

Seriously I can’t beliebe we have posters trying to convince women who say a term is misogynistic because well can’t we think about OTHER meanings of the word and like, ignore the historical baggage?

Seriously are you listening to yourself. Insert literally ANY other perjorarive term for a racial ethnic or religous group and you will see how awful this is. It’s like saying the n word is OK because “it really just refers to a color after all”
