Online if you want to take it. You translate the drag phrase.
How nice to see that those putting it together didn't think that "fishy" meaning a very feminine drag queen may be offensive....

Well, this is the Feminism board. Here we talk about feminist issues.

@Justhadathought

Fair points, I don't have the same exposure or experiences with the Gay community so I'm not in a position to comment - it sounds like you are drawing from experience.

I see racism against my DH on a daily basis and the battles he fights working in a predominantly white environment, and for whatever reason I find black face so much more offensive than drag. I do understand the arguments that put them side by side however I think the intent is very important and different in the two.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 03/10/2019 22:23

Go sort those out then Mac.

Off you pop.

to empower the women that had transitioned

This is the problem with language changing without consensus. "the women that had" suggests to me that you are talking about women. But are you? Did these women transition to become something else?

I assume from the context of this thread that you are actually talking about men who transitioned to appear as women.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 03/10/2019 22:27

Fish only refers to women - and could be a compliment to a transperson - because it is referring to the smell of a woman's vagina. How could that possibly be anything but offensive? How is that difficult to understand? Why do we need a lecture on queer theory here?

Justhadathought · 03/10/2019 22:28

The difference between black face and drag terms is the intent and how they are used. Black face is used by a group in power to put down an oppressed group

You see, I don't think this is as straightforward and unproblematical as you are suggesting.

The gay men have emphasised & exaggerated their felt/identified/experienced 'femininity' in the form of drag...even though what is presented in drag is always of the highly gendered, stereotypical, ballsy, man-eating, bitchy, aggressive, negative feminine stereotype, does not neutralise the 'distaste' felt towards those gendered stereotypes. Everyone knows and feels that this drag queen is 'a bitch' 'Her' cutting dialogue is funny; her whip-lash tongue is hilarious.

But as an actual woman - i have always felt profound dissonance with these presentations, even when I'm supposed to have found them funny. Always found them disrespectful.

Justhadathought · 03/10/2019 22:30

I'm sure that there are more pressing matters in the world

Such as?

Nottheduchess · 03/10/2019 22:43

take it up with the vikings

Which series did you enjoy best? The one with the raping or the one with the slaughtering? 🤔

Mac1990 · 03/10/2019 22:44

Climate change, nuclear security, biorisk reduction, positively shaping the development of artificial intelligent, improving health in poorer countries, and Promoting peace and international coordination to name a few.

If you want to be offended by negative connotations that you associate with a word then go ahead.

But consider that fishy in terms of drag does not mean smelly. A word that did mean smelly, in a different context, has been claimed and its meaning changed to feminine. And being feminine is positive. So fishy in drag is positive.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 03/10/2019 22:47

So fishy in drag is positive. nah.

‘Gee, you smell like fish!’
‘Why thank you so kindly’

Honestly, you go. We can hold the fort here. I think all these things will benefit from your input. Just as this thread has.

Campervan69 · 03/10/2019 22:47

Just popping in to identify as offended that you are offended that we are offended.

Yeah and BBC. Fishy is disgusting. So many gay men calling lesbians this. Nasty.

Ereshkigal · 03/10/2019 22:49

Did some sort of klaxon go off?

Campervan69 · 03/10/2019 22:50

Who is this uneducated fool above? The quality, spelling and grammar of mumsnet feminist board ain't what it used to be.

I've had several shandies this evening and can still engage spellcheck ffs

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 03/10/2019 22:50

All those who don't think it is offensive, call your mums and ask them if they would mind if someone said they smelled of fish because they have a vagina that smells of fish.

We'll wait.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 03/10/2019 22:51

Better than smelling like a dick I suppose...

testing987654321 · 03/10/2019 22:53

'Gee, you smell like fish!’'

Precisely.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 03/10/2019 22:53

Personally I have ten quid on, 'actually my mum loves being called fish so much she changed her name to Fishy McHaddock'.

Any other takers?

Ereshkigal · 03/10/2019 22:57

"My mum remembers how hard it was for gay drag artistes in her day and is happy to be compared to fish to make their modern counterparts feel at home"

Mac1990 · 03/10/2019 23:02

There's a big difference between smelling like fish, and being fishy.

Ereshkigal · 03/10/2019 23:04

Oh, huge.

SadlyMissTaken · 03/10/2019 23:11

I've only seen drag live once. Drag bingo in Hackney. The guy in drag bitched about Victoria Beckham. It was spectacularly unfunny and not witty at all. Just disturbingly malicious. He came across as someone who hated women.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 03/10/2019 23:12

Yeah. Massive difference.

Did you call your mum Mac?

I'm surprised you're back so soon because thst was helluva to do list.

Mac1990 · 03/10/2019 23:13

That*
