Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I've just been called a TERF...

On Facebook.

Local Facebook page, a man posts a discussion about Prolife protesters outside abortion clinics. A picture of himself with a sign saying 'screw these guys', pointing to the Prolifers.

He then proceeds to lecture women thinking about counter protesting, saying sometimes it makes the situation worse (yet he posts a photo of himself clearly antagonising the prolifers at a previous protest Hmm )

I point out to people thinking about counter protesting, with a particular group who are mentioned, that the prochoice group hold certain views about gender that conflict with my own.
That they believe the word woman should not be used on placards as 'people of all genders use abortion services'
Obviously it's just women that use abortion services.

So a sign stating 'A woman's womb is no ones business but her own' would not be allowed. It would have to say 'A person's womb is no ones business but their own'

Anyway. I was blocked by the OP.

This below was the reason.

Funnily enough, before he blocked me I received around a DOZEN likes from Women agreeing with what I said. They also believe that the word woman is Not dirty and should be a use able word in relation to abortion services.

Yet this man think he knows better than them and me.

He blocked me again before I could reply.

Argh.

I've just been called a TERF...

This person has nothing whatsoever to add. They are just derailing the thread. There is no point expounding your effort on arguing with them. They will never make an actual argument that you can pin down and challenge and in fact arrogantly refuse to do so. As pp on several threads have noted they have a rather childish way of looking at the world.

Karkasaurus · 29/09/2019 17:11

That's precisely the point, isn't it? You only want me to explain my reasoning so you can argue with it. So let's just both happily skip that part and you can go on posting your nonsense.

I mean, can you imagine a trans person safely using a bathroom without attacking someone? They're dangerous maniacs, right? I mean, they have a Y chromosome for heaven's sake! Can't be trusted.

Ereshkigal · 29/09/2019 17:12

Yes, let's skip that part, and then everyone can ignore your pointless nonsense.

Ereshkigal · 29/09/2019 17:14

Refusing to post your own argument while challenging and insulting others is not posting in good faith.

We all know it's because you don't have a leg to stand on.

Karkasaurus · 29/09/2019 17:14

Please do so. I'm eager to read your next installment. I've run out of my Agatha Christies.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 29/09/2019 17:15

Why are you bothering? You have nothing to say.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 29/09/2019 17:15

I'm just a bit confused about what the point of going "just so you know, I'm not going to discuss this with you" over and over again is. At a certain point that actually is a discussion, just a really boring and pointless one.

Karkasaurus · 29/09/2019 17:17

Indeed. So let's get back to the trans bashing shall we? Who wants to start?

ErrolTheDragon · 29/09/2019 17:17

I mean, can you imagine a trans person safely using a bathroom without attacking someone?
Yes
They're dangerous maniacs, right?

No.

And if you'd bothered to ever actually read what women on FWR write, you'd know that. So, these pointless posts are evidently written from mere prejudice, based on invalid assumptions about what the issues are.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 29/09/2019 17:20

Reading is fundamental!

(Puts on teacher hat)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/09/2019 17:21

Yes - it is much easier to set up straw man arguments and then ‘show’ how silly these are than to actually engage with the facts.

Karkasaurus · 29/09/2019 17:23

I'm glad to hear you think trans people should be able to use their bathroom of choice. Very refreshing news!

Ereshkigal · 29/09/2019 17:23

No, Karkasaurus, we are happy that we all see the label 'Terf' for the impotent, useless, meaningless toddler term that it is. We are smug that we see it for what it is.

As for dashing in and out to hurl "shit" and "pathetic" at us, well....we ARE on a Feminism and Women's Rights board so we are allowed to discuss issues that affect Women.

Do you want to engage in the dialogue or just lamely throw insults around?

Think we have the answer now.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 29/09/2019 17:25

Random but not entirely unrelated and I'm sure we're all eager to talk about anything other than what some people won't talk about, I ran across the most excellent illustration of the epic sense of humor failure infecting some of the self-consciously Woke.

www.buzzfeed.com/spenceralthouse/problematic-friends-tv-show-moments

Like, they realize the point of the episode where dad is having a fit about his son playing with a Barbie is that dad is being a dumbass, right? Not sure how much more obvious it could have been made short of having an arrow with IDIOT on it pointing at his head the whole time.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/09/2019 17:26

If there's any posts on this thread which you think are 'trans bashing', then you should report them - anyone who's been on MN for a decade should know how to do that.

If you can't identify any posts which are actually doing that, then maybe you should retract the post which implies they exist?

TheAlternativeTentacle · 29/09/2019 17:29

I mean, they have a Y chromosome for heaven's sake! Can't be trusted.

Well, fact is that 98% of sex crimes are committed by males.

So what is it that turns a man, who is statistically more of a danger to women than other women, into a safe 'woman'?

I've been asking years, what is it?

Is it just that you have empathy but no actual reasoning for this? It's ok if you do, many people feel that way.

But I'd love to know what it is about the words 'I am a woman' than makes a man into a safer bet?

Ereshkigal · 29/09/2019 17:31

Yes, the characters in Friends were frequently arseholes. That was part of the humour, they were flawed, human, three dimensional individuals. Most sitcom characters are or there wouldn't be much comedy.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/09/2019 17:31

I'm glad to hear you think trans people should be able to use their bathroom of choice.

Which obviously wasn't what I said. Because unlike you, I have some understanding of the need some women have for single sex spaces.
Feminism is about centring women's needs, not giving up women's rights when they're at odds with what other groups want.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 29/09/2019 17:33

What's odd is that one person writing about how awful they were was talking about how much she loved Seinfeld, and the characters in that were all arseholes too.

Ereshkigal · 29/09/2019 17:34

I guess people thought of Seinfeld as more "intelligent". Lots of people used to sneer at Friends.

Ereshkigal · 29/09/2019 17:35

I had boyfriends in the 90s who refused to watch it, and I asked them if they had ever seen it, and they hadn't.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 29/09/2019 17:37

It's the fact that they're assuming that if something is a plotline then the show is endorsing it that has me scratching my head. Have these people just never watched TV before, or..?

I heard Spitting Image is coming back. Imagine how people who find something as bland as Friends problematic are going to cope with that.

Ereshkigal · 29/09/2019 17:38

As long as it only attacks Trump and the Tories they'll be fine.

Karkasaurus · 29/09/2019 17:39

Oh no, so trans people can't come into the bathroom. But you're sure they're lovely people, right?

Ereshkigal · 29/09/2019 17:40

Non sequitur.
