Sheffield strip club keeps licence despite opposition by feminist coalition

stumbledin · 18/09/2019 16:13

From the way the Guardian reports it (but does anyone think their reporting is unbiased) the undercover filming that campaigners organised has worked against them.

I think the licence will be reviewer again in a year. Have a horrible feeling that if it hadn't been "feminists" campaigning but "local" people the council would have acted differently. The patriarchy likes to be seen to slapping down uppity women.

They didn't even value the opinion of the local Rape Crisis Centre which works nearby. Sad

Thank you jen

In civilised society we all follow rules. They are rules of law or rules of morality

Agreed. Who gets to be the Morality Police against other women though?
It's the same mindset as "women must cover up to preserve their modesty."
So can women make choices for themselves or not?

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/09/2019 21:05

And here they go with their name calling like something out of a playground, and also, just to clarify, I'm a merely a "myth" grin ...but it's you and I Roses, who are anti-woman

Yep, we're not the "right" type of woman clearly!

Somerville · 19/09/2019 21:07

Who gets to be the Morality Police against other women though?

Wasn’t that you? All that disapproval of women who support whistleblowers.

BarbaraStrozzi · 19/09/2019 21:07

Honestly, we love women like you Roses. And you're growing in numbers as people realise what a massive hypocrisy this bullshit "Captain-Save-A-Ho" movement is.

Quick reminder of what this thread is actually about, rather than the strawman version that some posters would like you (generic you) to think it is about.

A specific strip club in Sheffield, which was multiply in violation of its licensing terms (including violations of the "no touching" rule). The club's management ignored complaints. The supposed regulatory system in place in Sheffield ignored complaints. The only way the workforce (including ex employees) could get any sort of publicity was to whistle-blow, with video footage of the terms of the licence being violated.

This thread is not about whether the happy hooker myth is a myth, or whether we're all a bunch of Victorian prudes out to "rescue hos" (words of another commenter, not mine).

This thread is about clear violations of the terms of licencing of the club in question. And about the city council's refusal to act on those violations.

It's also about the rather curious belief among some "sex-industry" [sic] supporters who have popped up on here that somehow the act of whistleblowing is more of a violation of these women's rights than working for employers who allow the punters to grope them, or of a regulatory system that utterly fails to protect them in the face of their employers' bad practice.

Sorry when I went through career advice 20 years ago and my 12 yo DDs did last week porn star was not offered up as a career choice....
Why was that?
Was it because its someone else's daughter/sister these men are fucking?

Hey these men who Pay for this shit don't see these women as women... They are not mums or sisters or daughters. Women can be placed in boxes where they deserve it and don't matter.
For every happy hooker you fight for 20 more are raped trafficked and forced. You live with it if you think you are a feminist. That's not my brand love.

Courtney555 · 19/09/2019 21:08

Women since the dawn of time are td our point in life is to procreate and serve men.
Sadly despite changes in law men still rule the world. The only thing they need us for is sex.

Christ on a bike. That's a very angry, bizarre view point. I mean as a pregnant woman, I guess my DH has, er used me for purpose? Unless this refers to something else on this thread that I've missed, do you really think men only want us for sex?

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 19/09/2019 21:10

Very good point barbara

While I appreciate that threads can evolve its a shame to let this one evolve right out of the point!!

MsMelanie · 19/09/2019 21:15

Rad feminists who are neither radical nor feminist always try to shut down any opposing view with insults.

If anyone is under any illusion that this is not the case then all you have to do is take a look at this thread and it’s glaringly obvious.

It is THEY who wish to oppress women and tell them what to do, what to think. Maybe if they were not so anti everything then less people would have gotten behind the trans movement.

Nobody tells me what to think. I KNOW sex workers and others in the industry and I listen to what they say. I am interested in those with experience on these boards rather than someone theorising online who has been indoctrinated into the cult of rad feminism. When you are anti everything is it no wonder that the majority say : I can’t relate to this, I don’t like they way that they ignore important posters with REAL LIVED EXPERIENCE that they will go elsewhere.

This is a feminism board NOT a minority tad fem board

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/09/2019 21:16

What's that got to do with who gets to play Morality Police?
In case you misunderstood, will give you the benefit of the doubt, I meant who gets to tell other women what to do?
Why should they?
It's OK for women to be told what to do, what to think, if it's the "right type" of people telling them what to do, is that it?

PennysPocket · 19/09/2019 21:17

I am a mother of 4. Your point?
My child free father is a good man. He as far as I know has never paid to view women.
My father is also a good man. So what?

Are you so stupid you cannot see that males have sexually oppressed women since the dawn of time?
Do I need to say not all men Hmm
Men rule the world. Men rule the sex industry. Don't be an idiot.

Courtney555 · 19/09/2019 21:20

I mean, I don't know how to spell this out any more times or any simpler. In ten years direct experience, I've not met one "forced" dancer. Not. One.

I can't speak for the whole sex industry. Just the dancer world. Because I'm a bloody dancer for over a decade. I am one of the women you're telling these stories about like it's common place. Call me a happy hooker again, "love"

So actually your statistic needs to be "for every 500 dancers who are perfectly happy and need to be left alone to get on with their lives, there is 1 that needs help"

Cool. Find her. Help her. Now stop pretending it's representative of 99.9% of the rest of us when we're the ones telling you it's not. It's that simple.

Courtney555 · 19/09/2019 21:22

Amen.

PennysPocket · 19/09/2019 21:24

Men create the demand.
Some women choose the path of least resistance.
It's safer. They get beaten less. Fed better. Have more social standing. Their children are not killed.
Survival matters.

But hey a tiny percentage of women love it so let's not care about the fast majority of women involved in the sex industry that don't.

Bullshit.

youllhavehadyourtea · 19/09/2019 21:24

I wonder what Lass would have said.

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/09/2019 21:25

Fine love, but yours which seems to be the one that would see choice taken away from other women isn't mine.
Seems it isn't everyone's either.
Who'da thunk it?! We're all different.
Women have the right to choose what to do with their own minds, their own bodies.
Fight for the ones who are being exploited, abused, wheedle out the abusers.
As it should be. That's never OK and needs tackling.

MsMelanie · 19/09/2019 21:26

@Courtney555

It’s just the men that they imagine....

The bottom line is they throw shame on the female body and think that the sexual act between men and women is dirty. They see no distinction between trafficked and exploited women and those working in the sex industry. Very black and white thinking. Zero room for manoeuvre. Ignorant as hell. But many do not share their views. It is only exaggerated on here.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 19/09/2019 21:29

I wonder what Lass would have said

We’ll never know Sad

I mean we could make an educated guess...

PennysPocket · 19/09/2019 21:29

Courtney

I live in Leeds.

I work in social care.
My patch is fucking Holbeck.
The legal red light district.

20 years I have worked in this area.
They are screwed.
They are abused.
They are killed.
The residents are abused.
Their children cannot play on the park because men approach all times of the day asking for sex.
It's a lie it only happens at night.

But yeah happy hoojers and paid sex work only effects adults.
As I said earlier you are stupid.

Somerville · 19/09/2019 21:31

In case you misunderstood, will give you the benefit of the doubt, I meant who gets to tell other women what to do?

Well you keep telling us off for supporting the whistleblowers who heard from the women about the abuses going on at this strip club, and went in and filmed as evidence. So you’re playing “morality police” as you call it, and then telling everyone else off for it. It’s quite amusing.

It's OK for women to be told what to do, what to think, if it's the "right type" of people telling them what to do, is that it?

It’s only you who said that. Not me or anyone else I’ve seen.
Personally I want further exploitation of women (in strip clubs or elsewhere) to be exposed and the abusive behaviour towards those women stopped. If strip clubs can’t keep the women safe all the time and operate within the law then they should lose their licenses. It’s simple.

sillage · 19/09/2019 21:32

Whistleblowing on exploitive employers gets me off, don't shame my kink.

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/09/2019 21:32

Goal post changing. You weren't just referring to the sex industry.

This is what you said
PennysPocket Thu 19-Sep-19 20:58:40 Sadly despite changes in law men still rule the world. The only thing they need us for is sex
You said men. As in all of them.
men still rule the world. The only thing they need us for is sex

There must be some amazing cognitive dissonance going on if you have any male figures in your life such as husband, sons, friends etc.
It's not the poster being stupid for pointing it out, it's what you said.

birdsdestiny · 19/09/2019 21:32

That's absolutely spot on, of course we are all prudes and think the sex act is dirty. FFS. It would be funny if it wasn't so boringly predictable.

PennysPocket · 19/09/2019 21:32

Fight for the ones who are being exploited, abused, wheedle out the abusers.

Men do such a good job of controlling us we cannot see the abuses until its too late.

Rotherham.
Jimmy Saville.
Countless children's homes.
Chrurches.

They make us think its OK and cos men need sex it's not questioned..

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 19/09/2019 21:33

I agree
