Sheffield strip club keeps licence despite opposition by feminist coalition

stumbledin · 18/09/2019 16:13

From the way the Guardian reports it (but does anyone think their reporting is unbiased) the undercover filming that campaigners organised has worked against them.

I think the licence will be reviewer again in a year. Have a horrible feeling that if it hadn't been "feminists" campaigning but "local" people the council would have acted differently. The patriarchy likes to be seen to slapping down uppity women.

They didn't even value the opinion of the local Rape Crisis Centre which works nearby. Sad

I would not lower myself to be associated with this toxic branch of feminism and whilst it may be prevalent on this small board the wider world is beginning to open its eyes to its many failings.

BarbaraStrozzi · 19/09/2019 16:55

Can a club not involve women performing without being seedy? Is it the nakedness or the men?

It's the combination of the nakedness and the men.

Pervy blokes going to a club with the sole aim of getting sexually aroused by complete strangers, playing into the whole patriarchal crappola about women being sex objects rather than human beings and there to serve men's needs.

Like I keep saying - turn the focus on the men. There is no possible motivation for paying a complete stranger to provide you with sexual gratification, whether directly through sex with someone who would not want to have sex with you in a million years if you didn't pay them, or indirectly through paying her to perform "sexy" dance moves while naked so you can then go home and wank - there is no possible motivation for that that is not SEEDY AS HELL.

CuntAmongstThePigeons · 19/09/2019 16:55

Ooh and one more thing Barbara. You have to be pretty much naked to stick on the pole.

Datun · 19/09/2019 16:55

Quite.

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/09/2019 16:56

This is a failing branch of feminism that fails to even listen to those who have experience within the industry. Calling names, questioning the sex of posters and trying to belittle those who actually support women’s rights . It’s like a cult: this is what we think, this is what we do, this is how women should act

Exactly

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 19/09/2019 16:58

I predict that this thread is going to feature arguments about strippers being like modern geishas and sex work as a feminist spiritual practice on it by the time I check back tomorrow. It's just about the right time for Portland to be logging on.

CuntAmongstThePigeons · 19/09/2019 16:59

But what about the women who enjoy watching the dancers. I trained in ballet, hence my entry into the industry and long before I ever worked in one I used to enjoy watching women dance. The female form moving is breathtaking.

I just think female sexuality has been controlled and oppressed and punished for thousands of years. God forbid women who are happy and confident in their bodies and their sexuality be allowed to work in an environment they find liberating.

CuntAmongstThePigeons · 19/09/2019 17:00

If I had enough money to pay a ballet dancer to dance for me privately I would! And not because it turns me on because I think the female body is amazing!!!!

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 19/09/2019 17:03

Very empathetic

why empathetic? why do you have to have empathy when your job is to get your tits out?

women focused
In what way? I wouldn't have thought a woman working at spearmint rhino would have been very successful focusing on women

An understanding of the power dynamics between men and women
for serious? do you mean an understanding that they need to be submissive?

when we get these paeans to the amazingness of sex work, I think of the Bing in the the Sopranos

all those enervated, insecure damaged women, periodically having horrible things happen to them

LangCleg · 19/09/2019 17:04

I look forward to you starting up an ethical strip club based on the values of radical feminism and the athletic female body with a side order of counselling men out of using it for wanking purposes.

I'm sure it would be highly profitable and a model for all future branches of Spearmint Rhino.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 19/09/2019 17:05

go to the ballet pigeons. lots of female forms there. they have their clothes on too

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/09/2019 17:05

Like I keep saying - turn the focus on the men

I've kind of said the same though, just coming at it from a different angle to most.
As in, if a man abuses, deal with HIM harshly, it's his problem.
Is it still abuse though if a woman willingly wants to participate, is more than happy with her choices, WANTS to do it?
Everybody's consenting in that respect.
So where's the problem?
Why should they have their rights and freedom curtailed?
Deal with any abusers instead, call them out.
Not impose restrictions and choices on women instead.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 19/09/2019 17:06

Also someone will refer to herself as a courtesan.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 19/09/2019 17:06

God forbid women who are happy and confident in their bodies and their sexuality be allowed to work in an environment they find liberating

the incidence of drug and alcohol addiction among workers in these kinds of environments does rather contradict your viewpoint that it's all super liberating pigeons

Datun · 19/09/2019 17:06

With ballet dancing on the screens, and a petition over the GRA, in the back room.

TheAlternativeTentacle · 19/09/2019 17:06

'Hi, I'd like to get on the register of official whistleblowers please'
'no problem, have you got evidence of the malpractices that you want to whistleblow about'
'no, I thought you had to be on the register of whistleblowers before you could collect the evidence to whistleblow, as it is highly regulated and not just anyone can do it'
'Yes that is correct'
'So how do I get on the register to enable me to correctly collect the evidence to whistleblow?'
'Well, you read and follow the whistleblowing guidelines'
'How do I get the guidelines?'
'You get them when you are on the register'
'How do I get on the register?'
'You provide the required evidence'

And so on.

Great idea Roses! It means nobody will be able to get evidence and there will be no more whistleblowing. Result.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 19/09/2019 17:07

The female form is amazing, but the male form, meh, whatever. Which is why the industry has the focus it does, obviously, just a bunch of empathic radical feminist ally men paying tribute to women's awesomeness.

TinselAngel · 19/09/2019 17:08

But what about the women who enjoy watching the dancers

I don't think most strippers are trained dancers.

BarbaraStrozzi · 19/09/2019 17:08

But that's precisely the issue, Roses.

The men - the male punters - were (among many other things - 200 infractions of licencing conditions, if memory serves me) groping the women in the club. The club management was doing nothing. The regulatory board on Sheffield City Council was doing nothing.

The men were being allowed to do whatever they wanted.

And yet you have repeatedly said on this thread that the problem here is the whistleblowers.

And yet you have the sheer bare faced cheek to agree with me that we should be looking at the bad behaviour of the men.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 19/09/2019 17:08

the absolute obsessiveness with which the happy hooker trope is pushed is really revealing

can't be a nice guy if the woman whose body your paying to use doesn't like it

what's the solution? don't want men to stop spending their cash do we?

so we'd better pretend women like it

RosesAndRaindrops · 19/09/2019 17:10

look, it's what... 9.00 am on the west coast of the USA, and a new shift is coming online!

Yay, because everyone with a different opinion has to have aspersions cast on them to discredit, can't POSSIBLY be a woman thinking for themselves!
Shock
Hmm
Biscuit

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 19/09/2019 17:11

we'll get some guy on here soon referring to the women who work in the club as 'the girls' and telling us about how much 'the girls' get out of their work, while typing one handed

BarbaraStrozzi · 19/09/2019 17:11

And you can't possibly be so naive as not to realise that threads like this regularly attract astroturfers.

Datun · 19/09/2019 17:12

I mean I've peak transed more people in strip clubs than anywhere else.

I'm really interested in this cunts. How did you show the damage that gender stereotyping does men who view women as something to objectify in order to have an orgasm?

Somerville · 19/09/2019 17:13

Let’s leave the counselling to the counsellors working with professional boundaries and qualified supervision, eh? The men who want to get turned on in public are free to go and see them rather than visiting a strip club. And meanwhile let’s pay dancers enough to perform in venues where we can all enjoy their beauty.
