Apparently “gender neutral” means trousers aka the male default. This is utterly insane. I mean I wouldn’t have minded the choice of trousers or skirts for either sex but only trousers?

Exactly. IDF care what you wear. You seem to give an awful lot of fucks about what schoolgirls wear though, @gonetothedock. Why is that?

MargueritaBlue · 06/09/2019 22:17

Ah come on men may be technically free to wear skirts but social convention means that they aren't. Kilts excepted

Which makes trousers the male option. Why should girls lose their alternative option and default to the male option?

ALoadOfTwaddle · 06/09/2019 22:18

I get it it - I really do. Some of you really hate skirts and dresses

Mate, I wore a dress to work today. I know you like to box people up based on a couple-dozen words on an Internet forum, but in reality people can have nuanced opinions about an issue.

Haha funny, actually, I think that if you go to a school then you follow that schools rules. Its not like its the only school in the area, there are plenty.

I'm saying why is it so bad that the school want everyone to wear trousers? From here it seems that 'it's a breach of their hands rights' (yeah that's actually on one of the threads I have seen)

Its school - not a fashion show

littlbrowndog · 06/09/2019 22:20

I still don’t get how the police can be called to stop girls wearing skirts going to school
It’s very bizarre

It seems the girls at this school feeloutraged that they are being forced into trousers
But for their head teacher to call police

Something gone very wrong

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 06/09/2019 22:21

So gender equal clothing requirements only apply to women?

ALoadOfTwaddle · 06/09/2019 22:22

Also, a number of skirts may be available, but that doesn't mean they're allowed. My school skirt was like this:

direct.asda.com/george/girls-school-skirts/senior-girls-black-school-pencil-skirt/G006067642,default,pd.html?cmpid=ppc--george-------_-dskwid-s92700034096923596_dm&gclsrc=aw.ds&ds_rl=1238816&ds_rl=1255529&ds_rl=1260282&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjqrc8o-95AIV2oXVCh1O4QLAEAQYCSABEgKEUPD_BwE

But made of an unforgiving navy material with a fold thing down the front. You could only get them from the one shop the school had arranged as its outfitters. Some school skirts are restrictive, depending on their type- I never said this was true of all.

sunshinesupermum · 06/09/2019 22:22

I repeat trousers are UNISEX, not fucking gender-neutral.

In the 1970s women like me fought for the right to wear trousers, against huge male opposition (and some females too) They are far more practical to wear than skirts at school and elsewhere.

This really is a non-issue.

ashtrayheart · 06/09/2019 22:28

Exactly @sunshinesupermum unisex not gender sodding neutral

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 06/09/2019 22:31

Well, it seems now we're fighting for the right of women to choose what wear.

Why is it so hard to understand that a girl or a woman should have the choice to wear what she wants? Not something the school deems gender neutral, or what something someone else finds practical or sacred because they fought for it back in the Seventies?

It's not a non issue. It's taking away the most basic of choices.

Makesmilingyourbesthobby · 06/09/2019 22:34

I really think this was to cater for transgender children so they don't end up with them fighting to wear skirts to school more than teaching girls about about how they dress and are seen etc a huge amount of students lose something to cater for a couple, yet another case of girls suffering seems the best option 🙄

vivaldisboots · 06/09/2019 22:41

I loved my school skirt. I had heavy periods at school and it meant I could layer up under the skirt, two pads then thick pants and tights and a lot less hassle for me than wearing trousers. I very rarely wear trousers I find dresses and skirts soooo much more comfortable. I joke all the time why can’t men wear dresses & skirts as trousers are no where near as good. Especially now the men are into skinny jeans. I think the school should have left the skirt on their policy but made that a unisex piece of clothing.

SarahTancredi · 06/09/2019 22:44

Yes trousers are unisex

In fact many girls wear trousers in the firm of Jean's and leggings all the time.

However school trousers specifically do not seem to be designed with girls in mind. At all. The only ones that even have a hop in hell of fitting properly are skinny style trousers. However those are often the one type of trousers not allowed

I have 2 dds and I can count on one hand the number of pairs of trousers that have fitted. Comfortably. Without cutting them in half lengthwise, dragging across the floor , having yards of material in the wrong places. I mean it takes talent to design trousers that can simultaneously have enough spare material hanging off them yet you cant bend your knees Hmm

Given 2 of the 4 pairs we have found are skinny style and the next size up of the one that wasnt is far too big for dd then either I have the most abnormally shaped, children known to man or these trousers have never near a pre teen girl at any point in their design and creation .

My dd would not be in skirts if these trousers actually fitted and I've no doubt that would also be true for many many many girls.

And now they take the back.up.away..

sunshinesupermum · 06/09/2019 22:47

It's taking away the most basic of choices. It isn't about choices - it is a school uniform policy. If parents don't like it they can remove their daughters from the shool

And thanks Chardonnay for dissing what women fought for in previous generations so that you now (as adults) can wear what the fuck you like.

SarahTancredi · 06/09/2019 22:48

And if you are lucky enough to find s pair then don't get too excited. Next year they will discontinue them or re produce them in cheaper material while charging more and they will look like shit so back to square one

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 06/09/2019 22:50

t isn't about choices - it is a school uniform policy. If parents don't like it they can remove their daughters from the shool

Our school changed its uniform policy when ds2 was in his final year

If I didn’t like it I should have removed him...ok makes perfect sense

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 06/09/2019 22:51

How on earth as chardonnay ‘dissed’ anything

Justhadathought · 06/09/2019 22:51

I never wear trousers because skirts fit my body shape much better

Me too.....This is unthought through discrimination against girls.

ALoadOfTwaddle · 06/09/2019 22:52

My dd would not be in skirts if these trousers actually fitted

Maybe- trousers were really popular at my school and I never had an issue finding them to fit. Maybe we just had a good selection of trouser stockists near us. Though, to be fair, most of mine were Dorothy Perkins and Matalan.

Justhadathought · 06/09/2019 22:54

Boys and men will sexualise the girls whatever the uniform is

Indeed, trousers show off the body shape more than skirts do.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/09/2019 22:56

If parents don't like it they can remove their daughters from the shool

Given that many of the protesters were in yr 11, right in the middle of their GCSEs, that's one of the most foolish ideas imaginable.

saraclara · 06/09/2019 22:56

The police weren't there to check uniform, they were there because 150 parents and children held a protest outside the school. If you read the article in the link, and look at the photos, it was clearly a demonstration, with most participants holding placards. Some were even pressing them up against the windows of classrooms or offices.

Clearly (and particularly as parents were among the protestors)the school didn't feel equipped to deal with trying to disperse it, so the police were asked to.

A spokeswoman said: “Police attended Mountfield Road, Lewes, on Friday morning where a group of around 100 adults and children were protesting

“Officers engaged with the protesters and they left the area shortly after.”

ErrolTheDragon · 06/09/2019 23:00

In the 1970s women like me fought for the right to wear trousers, against huge male opposition (and some females too) They are far more practical to wear than skirts at school and elsewhere.

I'm glad women did fight for our right to wear trousers, but not all women and girls do find them more practical in all situations. I'd guess most women and girls have some of each, in different proportions- no earthly reason why schoolkids can't have a choice too.

ALoadOfTwaddle · 06/09/2019 23:01

Indeed, trousers show off the body shape more than skirts do.

Depends on the cut of your trousers. I always went for very broad-legged ones. You couldn't see anything of my body shape under them. And so comfy!

Justhadathought · 06/09/2019 23:02

This really is a non-issue

It clearly is for you, but for women and girls that prefer skirts - for whatever reason - it is discriminatory.
