Hello FWRs

Has anyone signed up to spinster.xyz yet? It’s like twitter but without the misogyny. No banning for stating biological truths. See you over there hopefully

Yes .. none of us are leaving Mumsnet behind to the best of my knowledge. Over on Spinster you can say things that you cannot here. So users can use both and speak within the necessary restrictions here and speak with more freedom over there. Different horses for different courses and different audiences. Excellent.

TheGraysAreComing · 12/08/2019 20:26

TheGraysAreComing I think I see your point, but if women had stuck to using male dominated mediums to hold discussions we'd still be voteless and tied to our homes. There is a long history of women organising their own spaces. And a long history of men both questioning the validity of those spaces and trying to strongarm their way in to them.

True, but SM is unlike anything that was ever available then. Women had no other way of broadcasting themselves. Even if people choose to leave Twitter (which I get completely) leaving MN would be a bad thing for educating other women in general. And while I know some people aren't 100% happy with the policing of GC topics on MN, I think it is broadly fair.

TheGraysAreComing · 12/08/2019 20:30

Referring to posts like this one DejaVulva, I can see it will be quite refreshing for posters and that could lead to good conversations taking place elsewhere which would be a shame for lurkers. Hopefully, that won't be the case.

@MNHQ might want to take note, they might lose their bread and butter (posters) to spinster with their awful rules on the trans issue.

SaskiaRembrandt · 12/08/2019 20:31

They had, and used the same medium as men. Have a read about how women used the new-fangled medium of printing, admittedly they did it underground but they did use it.

And no one is suggesting leaving MN, just that this is not the only way to get a message across. Even before Spinster women were using other forums - even meeting IRL to talk in uncensored places.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/08/2019 20:37

Who is behind this?

It seems like a very convenient way of harvesting the information of GC women?

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 12/08/2019 20:43

Ooh I've joined and I'm saying things that would probably get me banned from twitter and it's super fun! I had to leave twitter as it was dreadful being around all of those abusive biology denying animes. This place looks much better :)

OvaHere · 12/08/2019 20:44

It's set up by a fairly well known feminist writer and her partner. So no worries there.

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 12/08/2019 20:45

Well you have to join with caution of course, use a throwaway email address and not any identifying details since I'm sure the stalkers will be watching there too.

Don't they have any hobbies? I thought they all cared about social justice yet they never seem to have the time to fight for the climate or animal rights. They seem to think pronoun rights are the most worthy cause...

Registrations are closed now, so it isn't taking any more sign ups at the moment Sad

boatyardblues · 12/08/2019 20:51

When I try to view Spinster, this is the view I get (not joined).

So many people have joined it's hammering their server. I think they're going to upgrade though, so once that's done more people can join.

Sexnotgender · 12/08/2019 21:09

It’s super glitchy. I think we broke it!

PencilsInSpace · 12/08/2019 21:10

Spinster is an excellent name Smile

Will it be public or hidden?

I don't have the time for another platform at the moment but I hope it's a great success.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 12/08/2019 21:11

Thanks for the heads up, I'll take a look next week when I'm back from holiday.

Even an echo chamber is a sanity check and helps inform real life conversations & actions do I'm prepared to give it s go.

Macareaux · 12/08/2019 21:21

I've joined but just get a blank page.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 12/08/2019 21:22

I joined earlier, but struggling to work out how to do the avi to make it the same as my twitter one so people know who I am!

I'll get the hang of it.

Is there an app version for phones? It's currently opening in a browser.

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 12/08/2019 21:27

This has just reminded me, there was a thread on twitter saying that spinster was (apparently) reserved for unmarried women aged 23-26. After that you became a ....Thornback!:

twitter.com/1followernodad/status/1105670176916172802

I've not verified this information with historical records so if there are any history or feminist scholars around let me know if this can be verified. Then we can all officially name ourselves with our correct denominations!

OccasionalKite · 12/08/2019 21:29

Closed to registrations now, but I've created a new burner email to use when it opens again. I've never been on twitter, it never appealed, but I'd like to give Spinster a go.

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 12/08/2019 21:35

I'm accessing it from my phone, not on an app (I've not actually checked) but it works perfectly fine in google chrome.

EllieMentry · 12/08/2019 21:53

I've joined – with this username, which is different from my Twitter one. I'm liking the huge sense of relief everyone's expressing at being able to tell the truth about sex and gender without being banned/deleted.

2Rebecca · 12/08/2019 21:59

Ive got the same name as on twitter. Dont care if I'm identified on there. Only sex is real (everything else an illusion) to paraphrase Carol King

hungryhippie · 12/08/2019 22:09

Looks like Megan Murphy has joined! Please be the real one!

hungryhippie · 12/08/2019 22:11

She's been given her blue tick Grin so good to see these banned people back again.

Voice0fReason · 12/08/2019 22:19

I joined - I think it's fab. Hopefully they'll sort the capacity issue shortly.

Similar format to Twitter and so lovely to be able to speak openly.
I won't be leaving Twitter or MN, but it's great to have Spinster alongside them.

Is there an app version for phones?
Install Tusky for Mastodon and type in Spinster.xyz when prompted

LangCleg · 12/08/2019 22:25

I'm certainly not.

Unsure why people seem to think we can't do more than one thing?!
