Issues facing woman and girls worldwide

Thought it could be useful to raise awareness of issues facing woman and girls worldwide and discuss what we can do to help them.

Please do feel free to add to the list also as there will be loads that I’ve missed.

It made me very angry writing and researching this:

FGM - ‘the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. The practice is found in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and within communities from countries in which FGM is common’

FGM is still practiced within the UK and is of course illegal here, we have only had one successful prosecution since it was made illegal and it was February this year - www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-47094707

Girls are encouraged to not tell anyone about it, awareness for the communities and those around them is the only way we can end FGM here. With wider efforts needed accords the globe.

Safe access to abortion - this is not just something that happens in third world countries, this is happening on our very doorstep in the UK! Northern Ireland has still not updated its abortion laws. Woman are being forced to continue pregnancies, even if they are raped, even if it was through incest and this needs to change.

Child brides - 140 million girls will become child brides between 2011 and 2020 . Girls who marry before age 18 are typically denied an education, at risk of complications related to premature childbearing, and more vulnerable to intimate partner violence.

Maternal health - The World Health Organization estimates that 800 women die every day from preventable, pregnancy related causes. That’s nearly 300,000 lives per year needlessly lost during what is fundamentally a life-creating event.

Sex based violence 1 in 3 woman Experience physical or sexual abuse in their lifetime. I’m not sure what more I can say on this than attitudes need to change.

Access to education A 2013 report by UNESCO found that 31 million girls of primary school age were not in school, and about one out of every four young women in developing countries had never completed their primary school education. That number represents a huge pool of untapped girl power: that same report suggests that educated women are more likely to get married later, survive childbirth, raise healthy kids, find work, and earn more money, among other positives.

Trafficking of woman and children This is the fastest growing crime in the world, it pulls in an estimated $99billion per year and there’s an estimated 25 million people trapped in forced labour, with an estimated 71% being woman and girls.

What are you doing to help them then?

Earlywalker · 10/08/2019 09:11

With regards to FGM, organisations advise that the best way to help locally is to raise awareness. The more people that know this is happening, the more we can educate communities at risk and assess.

The organisation CAMFED is campaigning for education of woman and girls, you can read/ donate here - camfed.org/

Human trafficking - being vigilant can help. Places like nail bars, car washes, prostitutes are often used for trafficking. If you spot something that seems off, you can report it to the police or anonomysly to crime stoppers. Anti-slavery.org also has ideas of fundraisers and ways to campaign.

The plural of woman is women Early. So when you talk about "woman and girls" I think you really mean "women and girls".

I don't normally correct spelling or grammar errors online but I have noticed you make this mistake several times.

dancingcamper · 10/08/2019 09:20

On your list, I agree there are many issues faced by women, trying to work on all of them on one thread might be a bit cumbersome. Picking one issue and focusing on that first might be more effective.

JoyceJeffries · 10/08/2019 09:26

Hundreds of millions of women globally are still being denied their dignity by not having access to single sex toilet facilities

Earlywalker · 10/08/2019 09:26

I thought best to have them all in one place so anyone knowledgable on organisations or things we can do to work against any point can say so.

Awareness is an effective form of campaigning.

The undermining of sex-based rights will affect women everywhere eg UN women being now for 'equality' for 'all genders' - precisely because the things on the above list affect women only.

Breast ironing.
Fistula partly due to lack of access to maternity services, partly fgm and child 'marriage'. Fwiw I haven't seen 'child bride' in a while - child victim of forced marriage?
Patriarchal attitudes from men affect women worldwide.
Commercial sexual exploitation eg by aid workers, by punters, online

In Scotland there's a consultation open on FGM until the end of August.

I think one of the most important things I do personally relating to these is create women-only spaces for women to discuss their rights and where to get support. Women in communities which practice eg fgm can then share information with their friends and families in their countries of origin. With the Internet they can share films and other resources.
Women and men in those countries also resist these practices. Fgm is a very hard one to talk about though. Lots of words for a penis and very few if any for the parts or a woman's anatomy affected by fgm.

Another thing is creating spaces for men to learn about their obligations and the struggles women go through.
That's led to men asking how to support women and girls facing forced marriage so I think it does work. It's also what women ask for - to tell the men about these laws.

That's couched very aggressively.

popehilarious · 10/08/2019 09:32

This is like that Mitchell and Webb sketch 'Big Talk' where a tv show gets a panel together to e.g. Cure AIDS once and for all. Well-known intentioned but extremely broad and needs people who are experts/ work in the field to really tell us what to do. Separate specific threads would be more likely to get the attention of knowledge posters.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 10/08/2019 09:32

I agree that multiple threads would be better.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 10/08/2019 09:34

I do worry that a focus on trafficking is a trend designed to pull focus from a more general objection to commercial sexual exploitation.
I think all forms of cse are bad for women.

Not having access to any toilet by the look of that article Joyce, devastating that in 2019 some places still do not have access to Proper sanitation.

Heartbreaking, I researched some of this and it appears that South Africa agreed to close over 5,000 ‘pit toilets’ but only after a 5 year old girl died Sad

Although just naming the issues so that they are in the forefront of people’s minds means people can then talk about them, and act when opportunities arise, or at least prevent inaction. If authorities know that issues are important they will be less inclined to brush under carpet. And seeing it all together highlights how widely sex based oppression still exists

Earlywalker · 10/08/2019 09:44

Do you know if the UK currently have a similar consultation super? Being able to put at risk children of FGM on protection plans sounds like a great idea in theory, these days it feels people in power tread so carefully over cultural abuse that it puts so many at risk, hence why we’ve only had one prosecution for FGM in the UK.

And yes the internet has been a huge help for educating these communities but some people need more specialist.

I think FGM awareness should be taught at school age to parents/girls at risk.

If England sorry not the UK!

I'm so glad you're finally interesting yourself in issues that affect women because of their biology. What a breath of fresh air.

But your "more prosecutions, more targeted approach aiming at parents/girls at risk" attitude could benefit from you maybe educating yourself about the issues campaigners like Nimco Ali and Daughters of Eve raise.

Prosecution alone isn't very helpful - you only catch a handful of cases, and you work after the fact. The key is in prevention, which can only be done by working with communities. Education is indeed the key, but not "white saviours rushing in to tell 'at risk' groups that what they're doing is wrong" (for a start, as many women from sub Saharan Africa will attest, "white saviours" have an annoying tendency to rush in and target the wrong groups because they have this mistaken blanket idea that "anyone brown and Muslim" is at risk, thus patronising Muslims from countries where FGM isn't practised, while missing out, for instance, Christian communities in countries where FGM is widely practised).

It's definitely a situation where (pace your comments about worrying too much about cultural abuse) well meaning would-be "white saviours" really should step back and listen to those from within the communities fighting these practices.

I'm not suggesting that you personally have a "white saviour complex" and I can see your heart's in the right place, but maybe this is an issue where you need to educate yourself.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 10/08/2019 10:57

Well said Fermats.

Women have been repeatedly told that it's transphobic and exclusionary to discuss matters like fgm, our biology and bodies and so on. So that issue really needs to be the priority as if women are both silenced and our identity erased by including men, then nothing on this worthwhile list can ever be effectively addressed.

Earlywalker · 10/08/2019 11:04

I’m black so Im pretty sure I don’t have a ‘white saviour complex’ thanks though for your input.

Can we try just for once to not turn it into a trans thread?!

Anyone who says discussing things like FGM and matters affecting woman is transphobic is a moron. Shall we get that out of the way now?

For sure sparticus

How petty.

FermatsTheorem · 10/08/2019 11:15

Apologies, Early (though I did say that I wasn't accusing you of having a "white saviour complex", just pointing out that unthinking calls for more prosecutions and targeted education often suffered from that).
