"Transwomen have periods"

A woke bloke I know posted this on FB.
Do I call it out or should I avoid wasting my energy?
I'm so bloody angry because it's based on a false understanding of how the menstrual cycle works but some of his female friends are so out of touch with their own biology they are, in addition to calling themselves cis, saying "wow, I didn't know that ".
However not sure I can face another pile on.

We also have smooth muscle in our urinary tract, arteries and veins, respiratory tract, even in our eyes. My irises don't cramp when I'm on my period Fwiw.

lilmishap · 26/07/2019 01:44

I'm a man and to be a proper man my words must be believed by everyone even those who know i'm lying must acquiesce to validate my manhood.....which in this case means saying I'm a woman cause I say so.

The only response is "did I mention my clitoris made a Trans Identifying Male pregnant? My son was delivered through her Penis thanks to her Penis based menstrual cycle and my Sperm producing uterus/clitoris, honest this is all truth"

Skippingabeat · 26/07/2019 01:46

Tell him it's not called a period. It's called medication side effects.

lilmishap · 26/07/2019 01:46

"Apparently her Penis was a bit sore after an 8lb baby passed out of it, but such is a womans lot"

Banananas · 26/07/2019 04:39

@OrchidInTheSun @failingatlife
Thanks Hmm I guess I'll be teaching my daughters to do what? Carry their used stuff home? To a regular bin? Ugh ugh ugh.

2BthatUnnoticed · 26/07/2019 06:55

Blimey. Yes, call it out for whoever is reading.

Just posted:

"Oh dear, where to even start with this? About the only thing it gets right is that cramping is caused by a hormone - but gets the hormone completely wrong. The entire thing is based on a failed understanding of the female reproductive system.
Transwomen cannot have a cycle by virtue of taking a constant daily dose of just one of the hormones involved in the female cycle.
The period is just one part of that cycle and is by definition he shedding of the endometrium - the uterine lining - cramping and bloating are merely symptoms of that process. No bleeding, no period.
There are four hormones involved in a menstrual cycle - five if you include the one that actually causes cramping - FSH, LH, oestrogen and progesterone. Prostaglandins cause the same cramping as experienced by a woman in labour, it’s purpose being to expel the endometrium (which is mucosal, not “smooth muscle”). The only muscle cramping in this process is the uterus.
No bleeding, no period.
Periods are caused by a DROP in oestrogen and progesterone levels, not the presence of it in the system. Again, not possible on a constant dose of one female hormone.
Also is oestrogen does cause cramping in the smooth muscle, why aren’t they complaining of pain in other areas, their eyes for example? Plenty of smooth muscle there.
If a biological male is having severe abdominal/intestinal cramping accompanied by abnormal bowel movements then they really need to see a doctor to investigate the possibility of IBS, Crohn’s disease or bowel cancer.
If they are losing control of their bladder a UTI is a possibility. Whatever it is it’s not a period."

Applause Fair - that’s bloody marvellous

👏👏👏

I am SO here for his reply to that!

FairfaxAikman · 26/07/2019 07:46

My FIL has been taking oestrogen and testosterone blockers as part of his treatment for prostate cancer and yet he's never had any of these "symptoms". Funny that 🤔

Well done.

The absolute cheek of him.

53rdWay · 26/07/2019 07:47

‘Mood swings’, like the defining part of periods is being all unpredictable and emotional and sitting on the sofa eating ice-cream for hours, not bleeding from your uterus.

Wonder if it’s occurred to him that women get these symptoms at other times too, and yet oddly enough don’t describe it as a period every time we’re feeling a bit bloated? You don’t get confused about what periods are when you actually have them.

Introvertedbuthappy · 26/07/2019 07:48

Fair - fantastic response. I had secretly hoped that we knew the same person as someone I know posted this several days ago but all the responses are things like “welcome to the club girl!” and “wow thanks for educating me” and “eat chocolate and have a bath beautiful” and I feel enraged every time I see it.

Introvertedbuthappy · 26/07/2019 07:51

Oh yes 53rd, another thing that enrages me. He too says that since HRT that she can’t stop crying at adverts and just loves watching sad films and eating ice cream. It pisses me off so much - as if all it takes to be a woman is crying, eating sweet food and wearing shit tons of make up and dressing in tiny clothes with your bra showing...

FairfaxAikman · 26/07/2019 07:51

Introverted don't think it's the same person, rather just a post that's being shared.
This guy has female friends going "wow, I don't know a hormone caused cramping". It's sad that these people are so out of touch with their bodies. It's possibly what makes them so easy to convince that "transwomen are women".

OP posts:
Introvertedbuthappy · 26/07/2019 07:54

Yes, I must admit I am slightly disappointed it isn’t the same person!
It is scary how many women are commenting thanking her for educating them when essentially it’s a pile of bullshit.

LizzieSiddal · 26/07/2019 07:55

Fantastic response! 👏

ALittleBitofVitriol · 26/07/2019 07:55

Mic drop! Well done Fair

nonchalantly making popcorn and waiting to hear the reply

Eaudear · 26/07/2019 07:56

'Bu..bu..but....estrogen....bu...but... cramping...bu....but...smooth muscle... but....... transwomen want periods too so stop being such a meanie with your science!'

Everyone knows that periods are caused by the changes in levels of hormones and not just oestrogen, don't they?

Ask him to explain how the combined pill works Grin

53rdWay · 26/07/2019 08:00

Imagine taking that attitude with a medical professional, when you’re actually female.

“When was your last period?”
“Hmmm... not sure... I felt a bit crampy and bloated last Tuesday, but I didn’t get mood swings till Wednesday, and then I wasn’t watching any sad films until Thursday.”
Hmm

KatvonHostileExtremist · 26/07/2019 08:03

Brilliant response! Whoop

We should place bets on his response

10/1 transphobic bigot

5/1 clownfish

2/1 silence

buttertoasty · 26/07/2019 08:04

Well done OP. He will just call you transphobic but hopefully it educates someone!

53rdWay · 26/07/2019 08:04

3/1 deleting reply, making long performative post about how No Bigotry Will Be Tolerated On My Page.

Funnily enough, I felt quite bloated and crampy last night. However, I knew it couldn't have been my period as there was blood coming out of my vagina just over a week ago. The giant fart I did as I climbed into bed confirmed that too much pasta, rather than oestrogen, was indeed the culprit.

VictoriaBites · 26/07/2019 08:12

Can I ask what they do about menopause? Presumably if they think they have a menstrual cycle, which is a normal part of life for a healthy adult female, then they must also have a menopause?
On the upside, if this sort of stuff becomes mainstream, then maybe they will use their male privilege to ensure sanitary products become available FOC on the NHS on demand, period days off will be written into employment law, menopause will attract welfare benefits and more. But wait, somehow once this gets in front of lawmakers perhaps common sense will prevail.
