So Jo Swinson has been elected new Lib Dem leader.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-49076118

This is a woman who is happy to play to the crowd and spout shit about TWAW.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3642634-ffs-libdems-totally-lost-cause?pg=2

Here we go again...

Hey Jo - how can you protect and uphold women's hard-won sex-base rights if you think that men are women?

Jeez. I really thought we had covered this shit back in the 70s...

Ed Davey once jumped down onto a train line and rescued a woman who was badly injured on the track and within inches of being hit by a train.

I'd say Swinson's shrill grandstanding pales into insignificance compared to that.

The LibDems want to be the party of green energy and placing the UK as the world leader in capitalising on sustainable energy generation. Davey was the best Energy Secretary we ever had. Knowledgeable and committed and very hands-on in his department.

The LibDems have made a terrible mistake electing her as leader.

JackyHolyoake

We know she's lying. She knows she's lying.

truthisarevolutionaryact

the Lib Dems are renowned for having some atrocious bullies in quite influential positions

And herein lies the answer. If you want to progress in the LDs, you have to hold your tongue, or be sidelined.

Layla Moran is on record as saying she doesn't care if they are a man or a woman, if they say they have the essence or the soul of a woman then they are a woman and she doesn't care:

merrymouse · 23/07/2019 18:57

Jo being unable to define women, means that her success is just well, meaningless because none of us know why its special she is now leader and why its a significant landmark.

Agree, and if she can't explain what the word 'woman' means, what other facts are up for grabs?

The belief that 'TWAW' is ideology and has nothing to do with protecting trans rights.

Imnobody4 · 23/07/2019 18:59

Anyone read her book - it passed me by.
In February 2018, Swinson's first book Equal Power: And How You Can Make It Happen was published by Atlantic Books.[67][76][77][78][79] Discussing her book, Swinson explained that government has "limitations" when addressing gender inequality, so her book instead mainly suggests ideas for people to make changes in their own homes and workplaces.[80] The Irish Times likened Equal Power to the "corporate feminism" of Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In
She strikes me as a complete lightweight, also has a background in PR.
I remember Barbara Castle, Betty Boothroyd, Jenny Lee. How have we come to this rhetorical question.

I know and share that concern re Lib Dems. I am anti prostitution and porn, but it seems to be a very difficult subject to discuss in the UK (I'm originally from another European country). People are either too embarrassed to talk about it, or they make jibes about 'the oldest profession in the world'. I believe policies on prostitution just get waved through so that no one has to talk about it, and that's how the 'sex work is work' brigade - and men - get their way.
I don't for a minute believe that LD is the party for women, it's not why I joined years ago. Having said that, I don't think a liberal party should necessarily be pro prostitution. It's an extreme libertarian position, and I don't understand why the LD have adopted it.

birdsdestiny · 23/07/2019 19:15

Thanks for engaging on that Thepurported, it's a first! I don't think it's embarrassment in the lib dems, it's how they view things, the libertarian position is exactly how they are operating, to the utter detriment of women. An above poster is also right in that their are some individuals within the lib dems who hold a lot of power and who hold a particular agenda. I could never vote for a party that holds those views on women. Rather ironically their view on Brexit seems to be the only one where their liberal ideology breaks down, I say that as a remainer.

ThePurported · 23/07/2019 20:36

Not at all birds, I wish I had time to engage more often, this board has given me so much food for thought! When I joined the Lib Dems it seemed like the closest alternative to the kind of social democracy I want to support, but you are right, it has become a libertarian party. PR was and is a huge issue for me, and that has kept me as a member. If we had PR, it would be so much easier for women to organise and get our voices heard.

HermioneWeasley · 23/07/2019 20:39

This shit is why i don’t vote Lib Dem any more

Mrscaindingle · 23/07/2019 21:06

The group Women Make Glasgow are organising leaflet teams targeting Jo Swinson's constituency. I messaged them to express an interest and they replied saying they have had a lot of response from her constituents. I think there is not much support for her locally.

SlocombePooter · 23/07/2019 21:31

Females 50% of her constituents. Not very good at maths, is she?

Sicario · 24/07/2019 22:22

I am crusading. Already been sacked. There is nothing more dangerous than a woman with nothing to lose...

OP posts:
TheRedBarrows · 24/07/2019 23:01

I gather Jo Swinson is also in favour of No Platforming. No regard for Frer Speech. How very liberal.

SlocombePooter · 24/07/2019 23:33

Yes quite.

WhenIsTheEasyBit · 25/07/2019 00:06

So her question at PMQs today... how is a question seeking advice from a woman leader to a woman leader about dealing with men who are too lazy to put in the work going to be asked once it's all self-id?

If the press code bans misgendering so that the public can be totally misled into thinking that women are as likely to be sex abusers and perpetrators of violence as are men, surely Hansard will have to follow suit? Maybe Boris will become our third dreadful woman PM (even if, la Pippa Bunce, he only dons wig and frock a couple of days a week) and perhaps Pritti Patel will do the decent thing and transition so her inevitably disastrous stint as a home Sec will be chalked up as a failure by the boys team?

SlipperyLizard · 25/07/2019 05:50

She had a majority of just over 5k votes in the last GE, but LDs were beaten in her constituency by SNP in the last European elections by just under 4K votes.

With Johnson now PM, perhaps more Scottish voters will back the SNP at a GE to seek independence, meaning Jo’s seat isn’t a “safe” one. And the SNP is at least having a debate on this issue, even if Nicola Sturgeon isn’t quite there yet.

TheBigBallOfOil · 25/07/2019 06:32

Really pleased to hear local groups are targeting her seat. Would be great to see her lose it at the next GE - and make sure she knows why.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 25/07/2019 06:57

I might email her about sport, with links to all the studies showing transwomen retain a male advantage.

borntobequiet · 25/07/2019 06:59

I left LDs over this and some other issues some time ago. While I was a member, I always seemed to vote against the majority when voting for a leader.
I would have voted Davey. J Swinson always sounded unconvincing to me.

MockerstheFeManist · 25/07/2019 09:04

After Timmy the Lamb and Grandpa Vince, I am going to call her JoJoMamanBébé.

Iain Dale is interviewing Stinson at the Edinburgh festival; might be worth tweeting him to suggest some questions? Grin

MrsSnippyPants · 26/07/2019 22:14

Stinson? Swinson! Fecking autocorrect......

Hello, Jo. Please could you explain how you are the first woman to lead the Lib Dems? I understand that you are the leader of the Lib Dems, but how do you know that you are a woman? And how do you know that your predecessors weren’t?
