sigh

twitter.com/radiosdavemac/status/1151108776981872641?s=19

"I will add that I’ve never put any trans woman on alongside some horrifc TERF. I vetoed it , in fact. Partly just instinct but also cos I didn’t quite understand what was going on with the anti-trans at the time.
I’m now reasonably good at the GRA consultation"

Further on in the thread (in which a number of people try to reason with him, including trans woman Debbie Hayton), he mentions his trans friend Jenny, who seems to have influenced his views, which is understandable I suppose. But still not appropriate behaviour for an employee of the supposed unbiased (ha!) BBC.

No apology though.

XXcstatic · 18/07/2019 18:13

As an aside, the Today programme was one of the main instigators of the MMR scare. Rod Liddle apparently believed that MMR caused autism and this view was aggressively promoted. Every time a pro-vaccine speaker was interviewed, an anti-vaccine speaker would be given air time for 'balance', creating the impression that the medical community was split 50:50 on the issue when, in fact, 99.999% of doctors supported MMR.

See also climate change and Nigel frigging Lawson.

I'm therefore not surprised that they have fallen for the mumbo-jumbo cult of the TRAs. The BBC is hopeless on anything scientific, as virtually no journalists have science educations. With the Today programme, you have arrogance layered on ignorance.

HerFemaleness · 18/07/2019 18:14

Was he unwell back when he was deliberately blocking women from discussing self-id on his program unless they were genderist true believers?

MockerstheFeManist · 18/07/2019 18:16

Hello. I have deleted the tweet I posted the other night and I’m for the offence caused by my words...

either a typo or he can't get the word out.

If this is the standard for become an editor of R4 Today, it explains a lot about how low the show has sunk.

And now, our puzzle comes from Bobby effing Seagull (again...)

AlessandraAsteriti · 18/07/2019 18:19

Debbie did say she was a TW in her tweet. I am sure it is no coincidence hers is the only tweet she engaged with. It has happened to me too, if I mention trans rights I get replies. If I mention women rights, zero (Guardian and RAS two recent examples)

ChickenNuggetsChipsAndBeans · 18/07/2019 18:19

He could not bear to say sorry.

His decision to exclude women from a debate was deliberate, his later admission was probably accidental.

Ereshkigal · 18/07/2019 18:48

wouldn't complain to the BBC. I'd complain to Ofcom. This is a producer stating that he didn't understand the issues involved, and decided to make sure women's voices were not given an airing about a government consultation that directly affected them.

Agree. The BBC are ignoring our complaints every time and going on the record to express their contempt for feminist licence fee payers they disagree with. I think it needs to be escalated.

BBCBias001 · 18/07/2019 18:56

‘Sorry for offence caused’ (even if he put the sorry in, which he didn’t) isn’t really the point, is it?

I suppose he means ‘sorry I used the word TERF’.

Whereas the actual point is that he vetoed discussions, and acted in a biased way when he is supposed to be impartial.

That doesn’t cause me offence, it means he didn’t do his job properly.

‘Sorry I was biased, I will ensure this doesn’t happen again’ would be the very minimum starting point, I would have thought.

LizzieSiddal · 18/07/2019 19:20

Hello. I have deleted the tweet I posted the other night and I’m for the offence caused by my words...

Look Dave, we arent worried too much about your words. We're worried about your actions. You activley stopped women having a voice, you mysoginist. You need some diversity training and a read of the Equalitiers Act, which people like you are trying to get rid of.

LizzieSiddal · 18/07/2019 19:21

*Equalities Act

FloralBunting · 18/07/2019 19:31

Yes, it's not that you told everyone on Twitter that you discriminated against women via public broadcaster obliged to be neutral.

It's that you did it in the first place, chump.

IdaBWells · 18/07/2019 19:51

When watching clips on YouTube of Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain (or whatever it's called, I am outside UK) whenever he has a transwoman as a guest, it is always noticeable how much of the conversation is dominated by the biological males.

Whether Monroe or the former male presenter (can't remember the name but is blonde) they literally just end up talking to Piers and hardly anyone else (women) get a word in.

Men just are oblivious to how they screen out women. Although I think many LOVE being able to scream "TERF" from the rooftops. So interesting that the only term of abuse that's allowed everywhere is one that is misogynistic.

This BBC employee is more of the same. As women, even though we are 50%+ of the population, we just never hear our POV.

Popchyk · 18/07/2019 20:04

BBC Equality Information Report 2018

downloads.bbc.co.uk/diversity/pdf/bbc-equality-information-report-2017-18.pdf

2.5% of all staff identify as transgender at the BBC. That rises to 2.8% of senior management roles.

5% of all staff are gay men, rising to 5.7% at senior management level.

Around 1% of BBC staff identify as lesbian women (obviously that could include some men cos it's all about the feelz). This remains at 1% at senior management level.

BBC complaints framework:

ssl.bbc.co.uk/complaints/forms/assets/complaintsnew/resources/BBC_Complaints_Framework.pdf

This is likely to fall under the General Complaints procedure which means it has to go through the kafkaesque funhouse that is the BBC internal complaints procedure before it can be escalated to OFCOM.

Start here:

www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/

We need to put in lots of complaints about this but we also need to be persistent and escalate at each stage until it's in front of the regulator. Once OFCOM have been given strong evidence of BBC bias they are responsible if they permit it to continue. And if that happens you get your MP to ask awkward questions of appropriate government ministers and departments.

Multi-stage complaints procedures are designed to make people give up but it's very important that we don't. Read every BS reply they send you right through to end where it says something like 'If you are still not satisfied with our response ...' and then do what it says underneath, with reference to the framework linked above.

Don't give up, keep escalating your complaint until it's taken seriously and dealt with appropriately.

OrchidInTheSun · 18/07/2019 21:12

Thanks Pencils. That's really helpful. I'm not going to let this one go

PencilsInSpace · 18/07/2019 21:20

A BBC employee with editorial control over Radio 4's flagship news programme has deliberately shielded TRAs from any debate around their agenda and its effects on women and children.

To the best of his ability he has ensured that no women are allowed to directly ask TRAs awkward questions. Even if a 'horrifc TERF' is allowed on later in the same programme, in a carefully contained, debate-proof slot, he has facilitated #NoDebate. During a consultation on a proposed change in the law that would affect everybody but especially women and children.

The fact that he called women 'horrifc TERF[s]' on twitter and didn't realise how fucking shocking that was is almost incidental.

It's archived here too:

Thanks for the edit, @MNHQ Flowers

I'm not letting this one go either Smile

SisterWendyBuckett · 18/07/2019 21:36

Hello. I have deleted the tweet I posted the other night and I’m for the offence caused by my words...

His omission tells us everything we need to know.

HerFemaleness · 18/07/2019 21:42

Complaint sent now.

His apology is shit. The offence caused by his words pales compared the offence caused by his actions.

teawamutu · 18/07/2019 21:53

Where was the fauxpology posted? I can't find it.

And no, I'm not giving up either. I did last time but now I'm going to jump through every fucking hoop until I get to ofcom. How fucking, FUCKING dare they Angry

PencilsInSpace · 18/07/2019 22:22

I'm wondering if we can complain under the regulatory complaints procedure - this gets escalated a lot quicker than a general complaint.

I've read here and there that a complaint about 'fairness' may be the way to go, rather than 'bias/partiality' - if any MNers are au fait with BBC charters, framework agreements, codes etc. please advise.

I found this:

www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0031/57388/fairness-privacy-complaints.pdf

I'll have a proper look at it tomorrow.

theunrivalledjoysofparenting · 18/07/2019 22:33

Shame the thread has g9ne poof. He was getting his arse handed to h8m.

So he’s broken the BBC’s guidelines on social media conduct. That’s worth a complaint.

Beggars belief. He’s meant to be a journalist. He’s either really ill or just not very bright.

Erythronium · 18/07/2019 22:35

He knows he's in trouble if he's now claiming that illness caused him to tell the truth about his treatment of women. I don't think it will let him off the hook though.

They all know what they're doing, the men in charge making trans happen, they just don't tell us exactly what they're up to normally.

So thanks for that, Dave.

signed

A horrific TERF

PencilsInSpace · 18/07/2019 22:35

I also found this:

www.bbc.com/editorialguidelines/guidelines/fairness

I'm hoping the editorial guidelines mean the same thing when they say 'fairness' as do OFCOM because there's a lot here that Dave McMullan - duty editor, producer and reporter for BBC Radio 4's flagship news Today Programme - has breached.

This sentence sums it up:

Our content should be based on respect, openness and straight dealing
