Well done to those two young women showing the world how they feel about this, hope they aren't being forced to share changing facilities with LH

FermatsTheorem · 13/07/2019 10:46

Incidentally, from the link in OP - the real results:

Samoans Feagaiga Stowers and Iuniana Sipaia took home silver gold and bronze silver with respective lifts of 261kg and 255kg.

Congratulations to Feagaiga and Iuniana - two fantastic women competitors.

Oh look. A thread that is not being brigaded

I was just thinking this

where are our community gender pom pom wielders on threads like this or the waxMyBalls one, that clearly demonstrate the issues of thinking sex doesn't matter. mysteriously absent

Popchyk · 13/07/2019 10:50

Those women with their heads bowed.

Christ.

And weightlifting is a sport in which Maori women (in the women's category) and Maori men (in the men's category) can excel. Their body shape can be an advantage, whereas in some other sports it is a disadvantage. And this in a society where indigenous people are disadvantaged all across the board.

But yeah, let wealthy white men take the very few opportunities away from these women.

JellySlice · 13/07/2019 10:53

Laurel Hubbard is not, technically, a cheat.

Clearly I omitted an important phrase:

Laurel Hubbard is not, technically, a cheat, but morally Hubbard most definitely is a cheat. A blatant, manipulative, cheat.

Better?

S1naidSucks · 13/07/2019 10:54

I was getting really pissed off with that article referring to the person as the ‘daughter’ of that magnate (by the way, no mention of the mother) and using the, in my eyes, wrong pronoun, but the last line.....😁

She represented New Zealand as Gavin Hubbard before she transitioned in her mid-30s. That’s the line that will make those reading and scratching their heads at how...erm... ‘male’ that person looks, suddenly go WTF!?

LangCleg · 13/07/2019 10:54

I imagine this would be an effort to a) distract lurker attention and b) tie up as many women as possible away from the threads containing actual, real world consequences.

It's blindingly obvious.

JellySlice · 13/07/2019 10:55

The problem lies, not in Hubbard's so-called 'achievement', but in the sports regulation body that facilitates and encourages it.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 13/07/2019 10:57

Completely depressing but perhaps this is what it will take to get the general population to see behind the reality behind most oppressed ever rainbow glitter facade. The reality of the cheating, bullying and appropriation of every aspect of women's lives.

And yes - where are the usual cheerleaders for this?

picklemepopcorn · 13/07/2019 10:57

Getting tired of saying ffs!

MockerstheFeManist · 13/07/2019 10:59

Not a cheat.

The appropriate term is fraud.

SunsetBeetch · 13/07/2019 10:59

i.stuff.co.nz/sport/114163563/weightlifter-laurel-hubbards-dogged-fight-to-keep-her-name-out-of-the-media

"Olympic weightlifting hopeful Laurel Hubbard has failed in a nine-month battle to keep her name secret over a driving charge.

Hubbard, 41, a transgender athlete who is trying to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, was charged with careless driving causing injury after her vehicle fishtailed on a sharp bend near Queenstown on October 24, 2018."

[....]

"Hubbard, who is the daughter of cereal magnate Dick Hubbard, pleaded guilty in January this year and offered to pay the couple about $13,000 including $1000 for emotional harm. "

Oh the opression!!!!

TorchesTorches · 13/07/2019 11:08

The picture is indeed very powerful. Well done Feagaiga and Iuniana for both their achievement and also their dignified protest

Boom25 · 13/07/2019 11:18

comments on the Twitter thread are heartening.

Didactylos · 13/07/2019 11:24

Well, some jerk has clean snatched medals off the female competitors
How can this be construed as fair in any way?

NotTerfNorCis · 13/07/2019 11:25

There are hardly any tweets anywhere supporting Hubbard. The only ones I've seen have been from obscure, hardline TRAs.

Hers what that Samoan's think of it. m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2774135092615286&id=278391252189695&anchor_composer=false
Pretty similar to the Kiwis on twitter.

Popchyk · 13/07/2019 11:59

The NZ Olympic Team twitter account got a slaughtering with their pic of the two women with their heads bowed down.

twitter.com/nzolympics/status/1149879157465108483

So they've taken action.

They've tweeted a different pic that looks less shameful.

twitter.com/nzolympics/status/1149937686322405377

JellySlice · 13/07/2019 12:05

I wonder whether the woman you can now see at bottom right of the new picture is the athlete who was cheated of her bronze medal? It looks like she's wearing some sort of medal.

Popchyk · 13/07/2019 12:26

Interesting, Jelly.

This is another pic, from another angle, in which the woman in the background is standing up.

twitter.com/RNZISport/status/1149871129885941760

Could easily be the woman who would actually won bronze medal, if it were not for allowing males to compete with women.

If so, good for her for standing next to the podium. She should have been up there.

Eaudear · 13/07/2019 12:36

The comments under that Twitter thread are 100% 'what the fuck, this is cheating!' which is so heartening to see.

I don't want to see women cheated out of their rightful place, but I do think it needs to happen for the sunlight to reach this.
